Winter sowing is a super easy technique, and a low-to-no maintenance way to grow your seedlings. No grow lights, watering, or hardening off; you simply start your seeds outside making a mini-greenhouse out of recycled plastic which protects them through the winter. The results are stronger plants and a foolproof way to grow all your favorite seeds!

one more thing, on plants with sensitive roots, I stuff my jugs with toilet paper rolls or cut paper towel rolls. I usually get about 7 rolls into a gallon jug. I also pack down soil in gaps around the rolls for root warmth. I then use the rolls to place one hole in each and double seed the hole. When separating, there is a lot less root intertwining to deal with. Usually, the cardboard rolls are so saturated by the time I pull them out of the jug, they peel easily off the outside of each root ball or set of roots, with the least amount of disturbance. I also will use paper cups (small ones) with holes poked in the bottoms, with a screwdriver. I do however, place a layer of potting mix in the bottom and then put the cups on top of that and fill them. They too, practically fall off the roots, after being wet for a long time.

I have found it easy to put holes in the bottoms of my jugs. I cut the jug first, hinge the top back, and from in the inside of the jug, I stab holes with a screwdriver. It works best when I place the jug on the ground and the screwdriver just pokes into the soil each stab. I use a skinner phillips head screwdriver. I use to drill, but the screwdriver works better. It goes very quick.

Ii have been collecting containers whenever i can for winter sowing this season..last year was my first time and i think i did ok. I will try ky best to make it better this year.❤😊

I also cut the jugs with the lids on first. It seems the lids help keep air pressure in the jugs, which makes the first cut much easier.

The spot where you kept your containers, how much sun were they receiving, especially since you had them covered? How important is it for the winter sown seeds to be exposed to the sun prior to germination? And once germination happens, should you strive for full sun?

You should strive for full sun. I’d say they got part sun here so maybe 4 hours but they still did well. I didn’t have that cover on long only for some very cold nights when they were already large seedlings!

Thank you so much for taking us through the entire process of winter sowing!! I'm amazed at how great the results are, considering the low amount of work that goes into starting these from seed (compared to starting seeds indoors). I live in zone 6a, and usually temperatures only get warm enough to direct sow in May...which means I have to wait a long time to see any blooms! I want to try winter sowing so hopefully I'll get earlier blooms :) Thank you again!!

I have a question. You mentioned that the germination time is much longer than traditionnaly spring-sown crops. I just started some winter sowing yesterday for the fisrt time. How long do you think it will take to see some germination ? Does the germination start before the warming of the weather ? :) I have watched a lot of WS videos but no ones seems to explain approx. how long it will take.

@@sofiasalemi4260 Great question. The beauty of winter sowing is you don’t really have to worry about timing much because your local weather dictates the growth. For example you can start your seeds in early January and they will just sit there until warm weather begins and then you’ll see growth. This video I did in March so the germination time was much faster than if I sowed in December because our temps were beautiful by April. The only other variable is some seeds take a bit longer to germinate than others. You can find that on your packet. I say start sowing whenever you feel like it. You can always do more. Most will end up germinating around the same time when it gets warm.

I’m going to add to this video next year if this works. I used seed trays instead of jugs for more space less work and created holes inspired by you with a hot glue gun (I didn’t have soldering iron!)

Thanks for this great video. I am in UK which I think is around zone 7 where I am in the south. I was really surprised to see you do zinnias with this method so I might give it a go myself as I always find they're a bit slow and late when direct sown. Thanks for this video.

Oh boy, you’re testing my memory here lol. I’ve winter sown anytime between January and March (this video is March which is on the late side but I don’t think it really matters because, when your temps warm up then the seeds start). You can really plant them when they are grown and your not at too much of a risk of frost - for my zone it’s around May but I’ve planted as early as April and as late as June. Especially when I have large quantities I’m willing to push the limits a bit. Let me know how it goes!

Thank you Rosalie! I am trying to figure out how to upload a picture to show you because they turned out beautiful. Zinnia stems get so robust and these are the “giant” variety so they are almost like a dahlia so the stems hold up a big flower!

Christina, what a WONDERFUL video! Thank you for showing every step including how to remove the plants and pop them in the ground. I am winter sowing coneflowers (zone 7a - end of Jan) for the 1st time and had a question - it hasn’t rained or snowed since the 3 days that I winter sowed in jugs and the soil looks very dry(almost cracked and leaving the sides of the container!). Should I be worried? Did you water your containers regularly? (And hello to your dad, the surprise appearance was fun!)

Thank you so much!!!! My zone is very wet in the winters so I don’t typically have to overhead water, however if it looks dry I would definitely water a bit. You want the soil to stay fairly moist. Coneflowers will be beautiful! Good luck to you!

I have a tip - not judging here - but you don’t need that much duct tape. I have even used twist ties - holes in jugs and twist tie to connect top to bottom of jug. But one little piece of duct tape will keep the jug flush/closed.

You’re so right! Two years ago my tape didn’t hold so I bought better tape and went all the way around. This tape was so strong I needed almost nothing! It was actually super hard to take apart. Thanks for the comment!

Love this video and have shared with others. One newbie question though... Do you find clear containers get too warm? I thought they would be just as good as milk jugs and others that are not clear (and labels are easier to remove), but I've been told that clear bottles can burn seedlings easily. Thanks in advance!

Thank you Liz! I did not- and as you can see I used both. That being said I kept them in a very shaded area against my house next to that sofa - so they really didn’t have that much sunlight to fry them. I’d say if you’re area is very sunny you may want to be conservative and go for opaque jugs or do one test so you know for next year!

Your seedlings are fabulous looking. What potting soil do you use? I used some generic my first year and had some trouble.

I like organic options and went with coast of Maine. That being said we have really ideal wet conditions where I live in the winter where they get some but not too much water. If you live in a wet climate you may need to mix in some pear moss or seed staring medium.

Excellent video. I live in Maine, zone 4/5. How do I know when to do the winter sowing. If I do it now the containers will be under the snow for 3 months. We usually can safely plant at the end of May. Also, could you plant the seeds in those expandable peat things and put them into a container that way?

Hi Sandy! The beauty of winter sowing is you can start any time you want in the winter. I did this video in March and I’m in zone 7 so I can start planting as soon as April. I’ve also planted as early as January during a snowy year. I’d say as long as you plant March or before you’ll be fine if you plant at the end of may. And if you really get a lot of snow save those caps and monitor so your soil doesn’t get too wet (but in general snow is great for winter sowing)

It depends on your growing zone! You should wait to plant until after the last frost. I believe I planted these in early May!

I actually didn’t! You certainly can (either before you put them in the ground or after) but I forgot and still got a lot of big blooms.

How do you stop root rot from destroying your seedlings. My seedling all died because white fuzzy stuff.

Oh no! Save your caps. If you live in a damp area pop those back on there so they dont get too much moisture. You'll have to monitor more closely but it should save your seeds.

What is the latest you can start winter sowing?

It depends on your Zone and honestly frost date. I've sown in early-mid March but not later than that for Zone 7 (our crocus are already blooming). If anything and it's warm, you'll just be regular sowing - which isn't a bad thing - so I say give it a go soon! It's cheap and should work for you.
