Try planting your zinnias HORIzONTALLY in a trench-type hole. Those little furry pieces on their stems are like tomatoes - I did this - planted the entire plant horizontally in a trench rather than putting the root ball in a single hole. I got successful 5 stems from one plant! With flowers! I quadrupled the output of this plant. Loved it!

The results for the bee balm, and the cone flowers are actually excellent. They spend their first year developing their roots, and getting established. More will happen underground, and then next year you'll probably get some blooms, and a lot more foliage. Well done!

Congratulations, you had great success. Isn't it awesome when you open the containers? I texted with you last year about the redbud tree seedlings I winter sowed. You should really try them. Last summer I planted about 10 of the winter sown seedlings in my yard, and only 2 didn't make it thru the winter, and they're about 2 feet tall now. I winter sowed another bunch of seeds this winter, and I have 18 more seedlings growing. I can never use that many in my yard so I guess I'll try giving a bunch away. I also winter sowed more veggies than flowers this year, and I had more success this year because I moved them into the sun more than last year as well as watered them more than the year before. It's an experiment every year.

Mexican sunflower is my absolute favorite as well. They are incredibly easy to grow from seed, though they must be staked up. I loved your idea of the tomato cage -Perfect! They bloom throughout the season & last til a heavy frost. All the polenators love them & hummingbirds too. Then the seed heads draw Goldfinch. They are the perfect flower.

I’m not impressed with zip lock bag method. I used a disposable bowl with drain holes. It’s early yet in WI Z5a, but I see only a couple with activity and only a few. Glad I didn’t do too many. The volume of soil and even though I supported with downs they flipped around and the cheaper zip locks quit working. It’s been a rough year for WSing.

I opened up my Bachelor Buttons and poppies about 6-8 weeks back and set them out. They're now getting ready to bloom (already have some Bachelor Button blooms). I'm getting ready to plant out my statice, strawflowers, Mexican Hat and Billy Buttons. The biennials I wintersowed last year are now blooming! I didn't try wintersowing zinnia seeds because even though we've had a few days in the 80s, our nights are still dipping down into the 40s (and I'm certainly not rushing summer!). This was my first year starting dahlias from seed (in my garage under lights) and was amazed that they germinated and grew as quickly as zinnias.
@dustyflats3832
@dustyflats3832 Жыл бұрын
Yes, I too started dahlias from seed and first ever growing them. They do grow fast! I had to group them in a large pot. I was just going to look how far apart to plant as we finally warmed up in WI. I’m probably gambling, but I have so many plants and I need the room. Today is tomato/pepper up pot day along with planting. Hope no more frost/freezes.

Thank you so much that is such a wonderful thing to say. I am almost embarrassed to say that I am not one that uses fertilizer when I plant. I know a lot of people throw things in the hole when they plant but I really don’t. I do fertilize but not regularly with miracle grow plant food that goes in the hose connector. It’s blue fertilizer and because I have so much space and so much room and so many flowers. It got really expensive really quick so we’re gonna say maybe you want a month if that Again I’m kind of embarrassed to even say that lol

Before mine grow out the top, I take the tape and/or top off of the container. Then trim the plant down to leave at least the second set of true leaves. I want lot of branching to support the stems and give me double, triple flowers. I learned this lesson with plants that laid down upon transplanting. Now I wouldn’t dig them up and toss. I would cut off a third of each leaf and give them a chance.

Absolutely! So last year I planted them between 2/19 and the last batch was 3/6. No rhyme or reason and no special order. I just plant everything at once. I opened them on 4/19 which was supposed to be before the last frost of 4/20. Because we had very cold nights in the 10 day forecast for several weeks, I kept them in their containers but open during the day and protected at night until May 6th when I was safe (no cold on the forecast) I planted everything out. That was the latest it’s ever been for me.

Love your channel - so fun! I too like the jug method of winter sowing but last year I filled a large plastic bin with a few inches of potting soil, then I put in individual containers like you did and I had success. I think putting the potting soil in the bottom helped (just a bit) to hold in a little more moisture as I did have to baby sit and water more frequently than the jugs. I always do keep my jugs and bin on a patio table to avoid slugs. I will be doing both this year as I have more seeds this year than ever! Thanks for your enthusiasm and passion to teach to our gardening community!

I still prefer the jugs - they need less tending to - I did have to baby the large bin but I had good success - I would think planting just in the soil in the bin would work if you had dividers and atleast 4 inches of soil in the bottom so the roots wouldn't tangle together - I loved your winter sewing experiment - so informative!!@@thesoutherndaisyllc

Great turnout! Now where are they all going😂. That is my dilemma. The WS in zip lock bags were poor, only a few produced so far and it is early, but it has been tough year with temp fluctuations for WSing. The larger jugs are coming along as it’s early here in Z5a, WI and we just Finally got warmer weather yesterday. I’m busy getting all plants outside and inside Tom’s and pepps out to patio and GH. So DONE with the mess inside. I have never had aphids outside and this year had them inside on peppers, basil, carnations, celery and cumin, dahlias. I wish I would have got this OMRI approved oil to spray them earlier. It’s been trying, but I think I saved them. Just so happy to get planting and need to get out there and plant. @BaughbeSauce
@BaughbeSauce 6 ай бұрын
Milk jug sowing you're just direct sowing in the container. You basically put drainage holes, soil, and seeds, water well, leave the cap off and throw it outside. This is best for things that need to cold stratify in order to sprout. This way when nature tells them it's time they will just pop up and you can plant them where they need to go. No hardening off needed and it helps to keep environmental issues (such as birds and squirrels, freak cold, soil dryness, flooding, weeds, etc) from giving you bad germination rates or zero germ at all.
