► 3:15 - Timejump - This is where I start talking specifically about considerations before buying a motorcycle.
________
I get this question all the time; How did you buy your motorcycle? I guess I never really put much thought into it, but it is something I researched quite a bit before pulling the trigger on finally deciding to buy a motorcycle.
In this video, I go over things to consider and various other factors before buying a motorcycle. Some of these include:
1. Finances: Money, payments per month, having a budget
2. Credit Score & Credit History: For loan / rate if financing
3. Timing: Financially related / buying a house? / having a kid?
4. MSF Course: Safety, learn to ride correctly from instructors
5. Gear: ATGAATT! Safety gear like helmets, jackets, boots, etc
7. Maintenance: Once again, money $
6. Research the bike you want: Make a Pros & Cons list, go to the dealerships, test ride, find something you're comfortable with.
With a few of these, I'll make more videos to go over them more in depth, like actually purchasing the bike, but thought it best to go over factors that weighed into my decision making process before purchasing a motorcycle.
Hope it helps! If you have any questions, please feel free to post below and I'll answer to the best of my knowledge.
Thanks again for watching, and be sure to like / comment / subscribe!

@nonconcerned You are soooooo right. I was married for 25 yrs, and devoted to my children. I was living in denial, as she was cheating throughout our marriage. She eventually discarded me, and turned my kids against me. I learned a lesson the hard way. Pump and dump is the name of the game today, and God is producing nothing but bastards these days, so don't fall for that fantasy of having the perfect "Leave it to Beaver" family and kids. Kids these days hate their fathers, no matter what you do. Don't waist your life having children. Please don't make the mistakes I made.

Just finished the MSF course through the Harley dealership where I bought my iron. It consisted of, 3hrs of online training with testing, a 2 hr zoom call with several instructors and students, a 3 hr class at the dealership and 2 full days of in the saddle riding exercises and an evaluation. It cost $300, but if you pass you get to take your certificate to the DPS and forgo all testing for your motorcycle endorsement. Easier to just go test, but worth the learning. 9 students in my group and only one crashed, the most experienced rider in the class! The guy who rode his Harley bagger to class everyday. He had a low side on the peanut course. Bike went right out from under him. He’s fine, just hurt his pride. I almost did the same thing just getting too confident on those turns.

@@Lucario9d drive for awhile before getting a street bike. It will prepare you for riding in a safe way. Therefore mitigating the chance of a fatalitie. Its more about you learning roads, other drivers, and everything inbettween. However, i would recomend a dirtbike while you practice driving in a car. That way you can get riding experience without dealing with other drivers as much. With that being said, it's your life so its up to you. Finally, always wear a helmet always, ride safe, and enjoy your time.

Credit? No. Save up money and buy cash.
@EnigmaGameMaster
@EnigmaGameMaster 7 жыл бұрын
If you can afford paying back the loan, then you can afford saving more money than what you need to buy the thing you want to buy. Loans charge you interest and it's basically money you lose because you decided to get a loan rather than be patient and save your money. The only exception is a house, where if you don't get a loan, you have to pay rent, so paying back the loan each month is kinda like paying rent, except you're buying the house, that I can approve.
@andrewlan1799
@andrewlan1799 7 жыл бұрын
Won't build up your credit as much as a car loan, is that because of the larger payment? Basic question, I just don't want to also assume it might be because that is a more dangerous vehicle.

Enigma that's dumb. The intrinsic value of that cash you're saving is going down every day. Take the loan. I'm assuming you're one of those mattress stuffers too just based off how adamant you are to not use credit. That type of behavior and mentality is literally why the economy struggles. Buy the thing now pay it off over time.

An over $500 helmet? You got suckered in by a brand name. They did some tests with crash dummies and apparently cheap $100-$150 helmets work just as well when it comes to protecting your head, almost all helmets in fact are made out of the same type of plastic, the only difference is the lack of certain features on cheap helmets such as a sun visor and the fact that they're more heavy/noisy in order to cut manufacturing costs.
@MARKINAU8
@MARKINAU8 7 жыл бұрын
Edward Armstrong I have sub 200$ LS2 and the Arai, the biggest difference is Arai used a lot more attention on comfort and noise insulation. I can't say 500 $ is some crazy pricetag cause there are way more extremely expensive helmets out there.

Here's a tip on buying your first bike from a dealer. Get the tire road hazard warranty if they have one available. It shouldn't cost much at all. I only had less than 200 miles on my 2016 883 before I found a 4" deck screw lodged into the sidewall of the rear tire. No clue how it got there. Had to call the dealership and have them come pick it up and put a new tire on. $300 later...

Good tip for sure! I recently found a huge nail in my car tire, luckily I was able to patch it for $10 at CostCo, but it was almost unrepairable, and then would have cost me $200+. That extra insurance is sometimes worth the peace of mind.

lol nice, not sure if I'ma get a bike yet, but I'ma invest in the gear first. Great idea. Maybe starting off with the attire, then, gloves, boots, and lastly, helmet before, if, I get the motorcycle. Great video.

I've found that Harley Davidson has a great financing department. I was able to do a loan on my own without a cosigner and got my second Harley, a 2009 Heritage Softtail.

Great commentary on things riders need to concider. Few questions. 1. Ball park cost of insurance I know insurance companys look at your credit score and charge you acodanly. 2. Will taking a certified motorcycle safty course lower your insurance? Again thanks for this important vlog .

Great video man! I’ve been learning everything to know about bikes and I have my permit test in a week. BUT I live in an area in NY that has shit roads and dumb drivers so I constantly hear all the backlash about getting a bike. That being said...Vulcan S 650 / Indian scout 60 / triumph bonnerville as a first bike ?

missed a few pointers that many miss as well. 10 TIPS THAT I LEARNED IN JUST THE FIRST WEEK of being a motorcycle owner/shopper 1: take a friend that knows you and bikes, one that knows how to check for mechanical red flags preferably. have them test drive it, ride along if possible. 2: go to a dealership and throw your leg over as many bikes as possible (including a few in different styles) 3: if you are working within a budget (bad credit ain't always from current bills) try metrics as well, nothing wrong with a good used metric at 1/3 or less of the cost for a Harley (NOT BASHING HD THO! Id rather have one myself) 4: keep in mind the differences between new and used bikes is a matter of driving it off the lot 5: about half of the accidents are within the first 5-6 months of being a motorcycle operator (luckily half of all accidents are under 35mpg) the odds of a person new to bikes laying it down at any speed (even at 2mph practicing for your stopping test and hitting a small clump of grass) you can easily deduct thousands off that "new" bike. 6: insurance on a NEW bike will be much much higher and odds are you will have to have full coverage so even higher 7: Is buying partially on appearance look for older models, often there is little or no visual difference between years or often decades of models, even times lower miles than newer used models. In the case of Honda Magna 14 years does mean a lot, but not so much on a Yamaha Virago 750 even after 3-4 decades. the more you save the more accessories you can add :) 8: if there are small (aka cheap) modifications you don't like about a bike (specially a lower end bike) you can easily switch them out. ie. handle bars range from 35 bucks on sale for aluminum ones to 150 bucks for steel ones and soooo many styles to choose from! If going ape (pun intended) or you've evolved (dropping them) make sure you figure cost of cables if a large length difference. depending on make model and brand you can get some nice fairings/windshields from 68 and up up up. 9: full custom paint jobs most often (99%) DROP the value of the bike. Not everyone wants orange with green flames. dealers will give you LESS for your bike as a trade in if its not an original paint scheme/pattern. This includes decals added or removed. 10: check Kelly Blue Book and NADA values for a bike you are interested in before over paying. if you buy one outright have the option of trading it or selling it to try a different one with little or no loss of invested capitol to get one you find more you. and you will have gotten some experience along the way which will help you figure out what would be more you and your skill is quickly increased the first week or two as well. these are things I learned in the last week bought the bike for 1100 (talked them down from 1500 cause it had some flaws) spent 200 over the week I had it to smooth out its rough edges, trading it for one that needs minor wrench time (nephew is a mechanic which helped me and I am learning myself) and I got 400 with the deal so after battery and cleaning the fuel system from sitting this season I can get accessories for one that fits me much better. if going dealer route, ask them what they might have with some cosmetic issues that was a recent trade in. you could save hundreds or even thousands. nephew found a 200X (Im almost positive) dynaglide he is trying to get for 6500 cause of 9 or 10 small paint nicks (that almost couldn't be seen), if it were painted it'd be 9000. when a dealer gets them they do a lot of things to "refurbish" them and not all of it is necessary, if it don't look new its replaced at wholesale cost and bumped to retail price before it goes to the showroom. all in all you MUST be happy with the purchase, if you are riding with bugs in your teeth (happy biker) its money well spent, if you are feeling like you are just going from point A to point B and grumbling about it you might have the wrong bike.

You’d be surprised what people don’t hear, I was cruising down the road in my S10 and some woman decided to cut across two lanes and tried to come into my lane, mind you my truck isn’t exactly quiet. It is a four cylinder but it has a gutted cat and a forty series flowmaster with no pipes coming from the “muffler” and I was pulling in fourth gear rolling about 65ish, so my truck wasn’t exactly quiet during that whole interaction but thankfully she looked over and saw me when was over the line but she pulled it back into the middle lane

Hey all I'm hoping to get into riding soon (I've been around bikes all my life, my dad used to ride all the time) and I rode my buddy's ninja the other day. I've done a lot of cycling (non motor) and I think that may be part of why the ninja felt so comfortable. But here's my question, do you think I will still be comfortable on a Harley? I know the best way is I need to go in and sit on them and just kind of see I guess. Primarily I'm worried having my feet sit a bit in front of me will feel uncomfortable or I won't be able to maneuver it as well. Thoughts and suggestions?

The main focus of this video is money and that was mainly what I was thinking about too when I decided to start looking at getting a motorcycle. Problem is that now my dad is telling me that now is not the right time and that I will either get crippled or die. I can understand why he's afraid of me getting hurt but I've been driving my cars for 2 years without an accident and I've avoided many that could have left me dead or crippled. Also, right now I am still living with my parents but I am studying while also working and hope to finish in 2 years. I plan on starting to go to a trade school so I'm not going to be getting stuck with huge loans. I am really young and don't have kids to worry about so I think now is a more preferable time for me start riding. My main reasons for wanting a motorcycle is that I enjoyed riding it during the MSF course, I want to save money (mostly on gas), and I want a hobby that I could do more frequently that also doesn't break the bank. I absolutely loved giving a bit more throttle during the MSF course and I really don't love putting in so much money at the pump despite my best efforts to drive efficiently. I already have the gear to protect myself so now my only expenses I have to worry about are the motorcycle and insurance. I'm looking at the Honda Rebel 300 or 500 with ABS. I really was afraid of buying a used bike because I've seen so many articles and videos saying that I might get a bike that's messed up. After this video, I might look at getting one with maybe a few hundred miles on it or less because dealer fees do raise the price up more than I feel comfortable with.

I really like the Harley but I have just been swooned by the triumph scrambler. it will be my first bike and I am having one hell of a time finding a decent used one in my area that isn't beat to hell or only a grand less than retail. I have had the bug to ride for years and am finally in a position financially where I can pull the trigger. I'm a big guy, 6'2 320 lbs. wondering if the 883 would be a better option for me. I love the way the triumph looks and feels and having the ability on going on some fire roads without bottoming out.
