@@liamo6889 Playing a character in any movie/show is a job like any other. Someone has to play the villain. Just as you say, you cannot judge people by their words, you also cannot judge people based on the character(s) they play. To prove my point, I direct you to another movie: Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix. The character Professor Umbridge was a nasty character that did all manner of terrible things to Hogwarts and its students. Actress Imelda Staunton took that role and when learning the lines, reportedly felt sick to her stomach at some of the terrible things her character would do. She hated it, but performed the role to the best of her abilities.

@@ivannechkin3665 I’ll give you this small piece of advice…Just let it go. You’ll drive yourself insane trying to comprehend the grammatical nightmare that is a KZfaq comment section. It started out innocently enough; a misplaced “your” where it clearly shouldn’t have been used in a possessive tense. Then came the complete disregard for when to use “their” or “they’re”. Soon it devolved into a barely coherent, caveman-like gibberish where “then” replaces “than” and “of” is now predominantly considered the correct verbiage over “have” for any conjunction ending in “ve”. Calling out this complete and utter abortion of grammatical rule will only make you the target and result in you getting labeled a “Grammar Nazi” or, ironically, a “looser”[sic]. Again, pointing out their inability to spell on even a remedial level will only draw semi-coherent slurs and jeers from the contently retarded masses of basement dwellers that frequent this forum. It’s best to just chuckle and move along. 😉

I often wonder if anyone understands the symbolism behind that jaunty fife tune. That's the march of the British Grenadiers. They're supposed to be the best trained and most experienced troops the crown had. So playing the song over an act of deception adds some contrast to wink at the audience. Plus it is a fun tune and adds an oceans 11 esque feel to the con.

The actor playing General O'Hara (Peter Woodward) is excellent with a classic received pronunciation (King's) accent. Tom Wilkinson and Jason Isaacs were great also. And of course Mel Gibson. The Patriot is a very entertaining film in spite of the historical errors in the film. At least it shows the 'Gettysburg of the American Revolution' -- the Battle of Cowpens, in South Carolina (some license was taken there also with the events, but Cowpens is one of the few classic double envelopments in military history, along with the Battle of Cannae, glad they got it on film, it's well done).

This shows you the difference between a true leader and someone whose just in the military for the money, pension, and glory. The Colonel was doing everything he could to get Martin to fight, not caring that he has officers taken prisoner. (Remember their intel said they were alive at this time, and not a fake statue in the distance) Whereas Lt General Cornwallis agreed to the prisoner transfer under the laws of war. General O'Hara was following his superior's orders and the laws of war, reminding the Colonel about such things.

@tgriffin3059 sounds like you're conflating my comments with someone else's comments. Like I said, it's very historically inaccurate. Either way, it's still a great movie. Just don't watch it and think you know real history.

Not really. He was an egotistical maniac and he used his position and the British authority to make him appear to be a better than average leader. More of a pompous and indignant subordinate that was more insubordinate to his Commander than a REAL LEADER Cornwallis reflected how the British perceived their American Cousins, tools and not citizens. He would have been better to have stayed in school and academics rather than the military and caused more travesty to the British had he NOT BEEN THERE. Here is a link for a short read on this incompetent commander shown to be truly incompetent even in life. The FACT that he didn't have the SPINE to properly surrender his own sword shows his lack of respect he had for his betters.

We don't watch movies for historical accuracy. We watch them for their entertainment value and on that account, The Patriot delivered. If you're looking for a Star-Spangled weekend you might want to throw in Last of the Mohicans as a wonderful prequel.

It is quite historically accurate. I find it amusing that the people who hate the movie have lied about it for so long that the fans of the film just blindly concede the lies as truth. The Patriot is heavily based on real people and events.

@@Wooster23 Really? Gosh, I seem to recall anecdotes about the British having alliances with the various Indian tribes....You know, come to think about it, it's mentioned in the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE....so it's not exactly an obscure revelation....Anyway, these tribes were notorious for taking prisoners after fights, and burning them alive....The American Revolution was an 8 year war. And the Indians didn't simply burn people like what happened in the movie. They kept people alive for HOURS while roasting...So the reality of the war was far more sadistic than anything depicted in The Patriot. Anything else you want to explain to ME?

@@Wooster23 The British were allied with the Indian tribes, and they DID burn people...consistently, and with great enthusiasm. Ever heard of the Declaration of Independence? It's cited right there as one of our reasons why we'd NEVER forgive the British. And we were right....

I’ve read up on Great Danes. I hear they form extremely loyal bonds with their families. I hear they can be destructive as pups so you need to train them early on in order for them to be more manageable when older and MUCH bigger. I hear they can be easy to train and stubborn. They’re also very friendly, which would factor into it. Don’t forget the size of these dogs as well. I imagine they consume lots of food. Now take into consideration that General Cornwallis most likely raised both of his Danes from pups. Also consider the fact that these dogs have most likely spent only a few months, possibly less, in the wilderness with Benjamin Martin. What does it say about Cornwallis, as a man, and as a leader, that his two supposedly loyal companions, would willingly and instantly abandon him the moment Benjamin Martin whistles for them.

@@Josh-qo7yd Well when your work and passion is in film and storytelling, every movie is a documentary on how to make a film/story and if it IS a good one, the storytellers across all departments (actor/director/producer/writer/editor/makeup/composer/cinematographer/key grip) are very visible, by their art that is quite evident.

Well, of course Roland Emmerich's and Mel Gibson's characters aren't exactly Shakespeare, either. Jason Isaacs Col. Tavington, for example, is as much a stereotypical pure-evil villain as they come, with the slight yet entertaining variation that this time the villain is English for a change and not German or Russian.
