I went with battery powered and I love how quiet and LIGHT the mower is. I’ve had zero issues with cut quality, but I’m meticulous about cutting dry and not too much. I have a good sized corner lot and never run out of juice. I was sick of maintenance and the light weight mower for the hills was icing on the cake.

No way I will ever go back to gas. I get up at sunrise and get my grass cut before the neighbors are awake and before it's 95 degrees outside. In the winter I use the bagger for leaves just like I did with my Honda. You can get plenty of deals on batteries online and on sale at stores. I own 4 batteries because I look for deals. My mower (Skil) uses 40 V 5Amp batteries that sell new for 150 bucks, I found 2 for 75 bucks. Never had even the slightest issue even though I mow in light rain and morning dew. I run a file over the blade once a month and I'm good to go. I place a value on my time now way I'm going back. Going to get the Milwaukee mower tomorrow as a second mower. GOT to have it. Love it!

I am a senior female with arthritis, the Ego fits my needs. My husband cannot cut the lawn anymore as he has parkinson's and gets dizzy/lightheaded. He does try to do some with the battery weed eater as best he can. The ego is easy to start, no adding gasoline or worry about oil of spark plugs and is not heavy. Battery may be the way to go for some of us seniors. It beats the $75.00 every two weeks we were being charged for mowing our yard (they wanted $85.00 every two weeks but we talked them down). So battery mowers meet some peoples needs.

I enjoy your reviews. Very realistic. I own a Makita XML09Z. I purchased it to offer all electric lawn service. I also have a Makita 36V Powerhead with all attachments. In my area this ended up not being profitable or a specialty service folks wanted. Price rules the day in lawn care. So this equipment is now used at my home. I have a small lawn and I enjoy using this equipment and it does a fine job. The trimmer and edger quality is as good as the gas( I have all Makita gas lawn equipment) The mower does a excellent job and I bag my yard, but not as good as my Honda HRX217 VYA that I used exclusively on my home. But frankly, no push mower has the cut quality of the Honda and the Versa mow feature is lovely. Run time is a non issue as the yard is small, I use 2 bars on 2 batteries, that's it. I have all Makita hand tools as well so it makes sense to be on the platform across the board. Makita is high quality and has served me well and this mower is great for a homeowner with a small to average yard.

I grew up on gas powered lawn equipment , my dad always trowing away those gas mowers every 3 years until I was able to maintenance them once I got to my teens and they lasted on average 5 years . Once I got my first battery lawn mower in 2015 and haven't seen a gas mower In my yard since . 7 years in with battery mower, the only thing I've had to do to it is sharpen the blade and rewrap the handle since the foam grip fell off. I loved working on gas engines, rebuilt 2 Honda engines and 1 transmission. I still work on my gas car with maintenance stuff, I grew up on loud cars and working on cars, its time is dying can't wait until I get my own electric car. I welcome the electric age.

It’s all preference IMO. I went to Ego and recently went back to gas, with a Honda HRX. I find I enjoy the maintenance. I like to tinker and spend a ton of time in my garage and lawn. The Ego feels like a toy to me now. I’m close to selling the Ego trimmer and grabbing a Stihl. Whatever blows your hair back. I’m sticking with gas for now.

I owned a (the same one) Honda Lawnmower for 23 years, It still ran, but the transmission went bad. I gave it away. No complaints. I did buy a Toro electric mower (60Volt) in late 2020; I used the mower the entire season of 2021; I can mow the whole lawn on one battery, about 45 min of mowing. After mowing, I have "one bar" left. It cuts just as well as the Honda, even in thick grass that was not cut for two weeks from going on vacation. As far as lasting five years, I do not know how you can make a blanket statement like that; Most items last as long as the owner maintains them. My neighbor has lived in their house for six years and is on their third gas mower. I do keep a spare sharpened blade and change it monthly. Another positive note for electric mowers is they are quieter, form having hearing loss, this is huge. Another is the exhaust smell as it is not any.

Hey Bug, through my research I found that many electric mowers last about 5 years. This could be for a variety of reasons including technology wear, improper care and even technology going out of date or being discontinued. Thanks for watching!

Exhaust smell - I never minded the smell behind a 4-stroke mower, but I had a 2-stroke LawnBoy once that would out-smoke hell when it hit tall grass. I didn’t keep it long because I hated that smell. It was a shame, really, because it did a beautiful job of cutting the grass ...

All good questions. All good information. I own an electric leaf blower, string trimmer and self-propelled 21” mower. 3 different brands 3 different voltages 3 different chargers. My Ego mower gives me a better quality cut than my old Deere mower. My old Deere push mower was only used to cut in and would then get out the Deere42” rider that I still own and currently only use to cut the backyard 8k sqft . My 5k front lawn gets cut only with the Ego 21” high lift blade bagger mower because the finished cut just looks perfect in cut quality. I could use my Ego mower to cut the entire 13k but about half way through the rear 8k (after I cut & bag the front 5k) I’d have to recharge the 56v 7.5ah battery to complete the task. That recharge would take about 45 minutes and that is when I would do the trimming and edging with my electric string trimmer, gotta have a plan. If I only owned Ego Brand battery equipment, I’d have more than one battery ( likely a 4ah battery string trimmer) and I would be able to complete the entire yard with one battery swap. Every yard for every person and their methods will make the facts for owning and using battery equipment. And there is no way I’ll buy a 42” ztr Ego for $5,000, it doesn’t make sense for my yard. My current rider Deere cost me $1900 5 years ago and that will the most I’d ever pay for a ride on, ever. I’ll stick with Ego OPE because their battery is designed to work in all their equipment across the line up. However. Toting a heavy 10ah mower battery in a leaf blower or string trimmer would be tiring. Both of those tools are sold at a fair price in kits with tool battery and charger. Ego also offers a very nice extended line up of useful tools to replace most gas OPE. As far as battery cost, I’ve only got one battery 7.5ah and a single fast charger that came with my mower. I doubt I’d buy “tool only” until I own more than one battery or piece of equipment. Ego sets their price for battery included kits fairly in my opinion so buying back up batteries alone makes no sense to me until I have more OPE. All my own opinion Great video great info once again.👍🏻🔥

Hey JS!!! First off, thanks for sharing this! Didn’t realize you had such a big piece of property! And I really like the feedback on the ego cut quality! Good to know! You shared a lot of good info here that I’ll be glad to know when passing it on to others. I didn’t even think about the battery weight. Especially lugging it around a big property can be a pain. That’s something I forgot to mention was different battery sizes. I would like to test out their battery trimmer and blowers. That could be a video down the road! Thanks for being a cool fan bud! 👍

@@GarageGear Ego has pretty good technology on their newest string trimmer Carbon fiber telescopic shaft Power load head one touch self loading String iQ auto feed for string length and a new 4ah battery size It’s like they brought all the great features of multiple trimmer into a single unit AND kept pricing fair @ $299 They also have a multi head option on another model Keep up the great work brother 👍🏻👍🏻

yup, all true. there is another type of land mower, the first electric one with an extension. I know it's annoying, but constant power, no problem to mulch the lawn, no oil /sparkplug/ filter change, no gas canister or gas storage product for winter. Just regular maintenance, clean the bottom and sharpen the blade, and less expensive for the purchase and maintenance. My father electric corded lawn mower is more then 30 years old, took good care of it. I am in Canada, our electricity is hydro electricity, so environmental friendly. I have an average backyard around 1 800 feet square, and for me , I am happily satisfied with my mower, if I had the double, it will be a gas powered mower. Electric mower here on year 3 still using the same battery, pretty much never run out of battery before finishing the yard. All I've done is plug it in and sharpen the blade. Pretty sure I've spent way less than 45 dollars a year to run it since it's about a quarter kilowatt battery and electricity is 12 cents a kwh here. Ballpark I've got less than 8 dollars a year into mowing my lawn. Even if gas was free it'd cost more to change the oil in it than that. It was a no brainier for me. I've maintained my own gas powered stuff for over 10 years I know I can do it and I know how to do it, that doesn't mean I want to.

I recently went battery powered, a Ryobi 36V model. Prior to this I used petrol mowers for nigh on 40 years. My yard is 20m x 30m so not small by any means and the back yard is a bit of a rally track. Grass is a mix of varieties including couch (bermuda) so it can be fairly dense to the point where a petrol mower takes notice. Early days with the Roybi but so far so good and yes, it can't do the whole yard on a single 6AH battery, but not falling short by that much. It's a tropical yard too and this is in summer with the grass needing mowing every 5 days or so. The couch goes from freshly cut to seeding in that time to give you an idea. In winter when things calm down it will probably do it on a single charge. The Ryobi is a breeze to push around (not self-propelled) unlike the heavy Honda. Cost wise, if the Ryobi gets to 6 years old, the end of the general warranty, I'd be close to break even on the overall costs compared to fuel for the Honda alone, so that's neither here nor there. When it comes to the batteries, they can usually be repacked. If you are the sort of person that cleans out carb jets, you can probably manage to repack an old battery too. Use good quality cells of course. None of the 'from that country' elcheapo cells. For people considering a battery mower, see if you can borrow one first.

I was happy to find an honest assessment of battery lawnmowers - most of the videos only talk about how well a brand new battery lawnmower works. A little research about how folks feel after a year or so often tells a different story. I did not know that the newer gas mowers were less poluting, but I'm still going to run my 12 year old gasser into the ground. Also, I don't think servicing a lawmower once a year is all that much trouble. Good video, also quick and to the point!

Agree, it's not much trouble to service a mower. But when you also have weed whacker, snowblower, yard vac, power washer, etc it is nice to switch to electric for some of these things. It's a matter of determining whether the electric counterparts are sufficiently capable for me. I don't even care about the price. How much is my time worth on a machine that I have to maintain? Time is precious

My Lawn-Boy 2 stroke mower just expired after 22 years of start-on-the-first-pull reliability. Bought a power propelled Toro 21" 60v electric to replace it. It's nice and cut's my lawn on 1/2 of its battery charge, but I can tell just by it's lightness that there is no way it's ever going to have 22 candles on it's birthday cake.

My Briggs and Stratton 'just add oil' engine is still going strong and starts first pull every time, since 2013. And to be honest, I can't remember the last time I even added oil. They're pretty damn good.. Having recently joined the commercial business, I primarily use my Honda HRU216M3 now though.

It's been 7yrs for me too with Ego and no issues. Cost of ownership over my previous gas powered lawn equipment has been a great yearly savings. Many neighbors have since converted.

Great video. In the past (till quite recently) I've been very pro-battery-electric, but I'm seeing benefits to gas more and more. While gas takes more knowledge for maintenance, there are boatloads of professionals out there who have the knowledge, and you can take your gas mower to an array of qualified people who can do maintenance and repairs for you. I just called half a dozen places that maintain/repair mowers, all do multiple gas mowers brands, none do any electric mowers. But, with battery electric, if it doesn't work, you need an authorized repair person for that specific brand, and all parts for that specific brand. Depending what brand, or where you live, you might be out of luck completely for timely affordable service. If you have serious problems with a specific brand, you're trapped, because you've invested in compatible tools, batteries, & chargers. Moving to a different brand is very difficult. With gas, you buy the best mower, and don't worry if it's the same brand as your other tools.

Just in my personal experience over 25 years, Briggs & Stratton are the worst engines out there, I have never had a good product with a B&S engine. I really miss the days where I could go to Home Depot and pick up a Lawn-Boy with a Kohler engine. I need a mower now and will probably be getting the last of the Honda HRN's at my local HD. Just found your channel and have been watching the videos on the Honda mowers, very informative and I have learned a lot, thank you for the content! Subscribed.

Briggs used to make good engines before they sent production overseas. I've taken a few apart. Did you know Briggs engines all the way up to 22HP have nylon cam lobes ? And the lobes are shrunk fit to the camshaft ! It's a big problem, the lobes coming loose and spinning on the shaft. And the replacement part is made the exact same way ! Junk !

Ive had a recycler with B&S for 8 years. Ive never winterized it, changed oil once, left out in the rain 100’s of times and it starts within 3 pulls. Id say they are more resilient than people think. Started it yesterday on old gas and it ran like a top.

I've had a Toro Recycler...well it been so long I'm really not sure but probably over 10 years. I've serviced it at end of every year before winter and it has never given me a problem. I'm sticking with Gas !!

Great video and some good information, after much hesitation I recently purchased the ego 2135sp and im really impressed,the cut quality is excellent even in damp conditions and the mulching is top notch too,ego I believe are top of the class when it comes to electric mowers,its a joy to use no messy gas,stores easily,starts at the press of a button,its much less fatiguing using this mower compared to gas as its lighter,when i cut my grass i want to go next door and cut my neighbors that's how much I enjoy using it,my garden is quarter acre in size and the battery handles it no problem,they even have a ride on that can cut up to 2 acres,with ego its an investment with the battery and charger but then you can use it on other garden tools,would it be possible for you to try the ego in one of your videos and compare it to gas by actually using it?i always said to myself I wouldn't go electric until it could match gas but I do believe now that ego has done that

@@GarageGear one thing to note with Ego is that the different models are fairly different. My target is a pretty base model, they kinda toss it in when you buy the 7.5AH batt + fast charger. With my smallish lawn, the question resides in whether cut-quality will suffice - is.it.skookum?!

I have a uneven junk grass lawn has gravel in it not great for any lawnmower. But once the grass is high enough I usually cut to 3 inches and thats been always above the rocks and bumps. So for .28 acre lawn I been using my 2 craftsman 6.75 bns self propelled walkbehinds. Both about 17yrs old and getting tired at the power level. Normal maintenance annually. New cables and filters and plugs and oil. Winterized. Would the electric upgrade be wise or stick with these old clunkers and change my blades as its time to sharpen or change them.

Great question Only Me! I have about the same size yard. I can tell you that the older ones are built better than anything today. The new electric mowers are going to be very expensive and you’ll most likely need an extra batter ($125+). I would keep those blades sharp and probably stick with gas given your lawn size. Oil at 20/25 hours ( check level often ). blade sharpen every 2-3 weeks, Blade clamped in vise at elbow level and 4 1/2 angle grinder with an open 60 grit disc. . Air filter as needed, vacuum it and clean with brake cleaner. A $2 can will clean a bunch of filters. Blow out the fins once and a while. Drain all gas for winter. I just put gas into mine today and mowed.

I have an 80V that will cruise thru deep grass it actually sounds harder you can hear it wind up and it cuts very nice. It's a Greenworks came with a trimmer, blower and 2 80v batteries. It cost 600 bucks 3 years ago and the batteries have not seemed to lose anything yet. It will be 4 the summer. We keep the batteries in the house all winter and check the charge. Haven't had too charge either during the winter they seem to maintain an almost full charge.

I have an 80V 3 months old came with two batteries (1 -7amp hr) (1- 4amp hr) the 7amp hr went dead after 5 cuts spent an Hour on the phone with there warranty department, either he was hired that morning or works in sales. Finally got another new one. NOW the 4amp hr has gone bad (will not recharge) I want to CUSS what I will tell you now but I’ve calmed down I spent 56mins on hold no answer SO I called back later that day 44mins ON HOLD. Call back morning 35mins NO ANSWER!!! Best thing I ever did was buy this POS from Costco, your guess is correct retuned and complete REFUND can’t go wrong to buy from complete refund if not satisfied. I now own a EGO, to new for any comparisons.

I have a 20 year old Murray push mower with a 4.5 ho briggs engine. Routine and scheduled maintenance keep her running strong, and the only things replaced have been oil, filters, sparkplug. I agree with you....oil is the engine's lifeblood.

The technology is getting better on battery powered equipment for sure. I never even considered electric when I purchased my new Honda. However I just battled with my echo trimmer for the last time! I caved and purchased a Stihl battery operated trimmer and must say I really like it. Who knows 5 years from now I might sell my Honda ( if gas mowers are still legal then) and buy an electric. I'm also not 100% happy with my Honda. My biggest gripes are stragglers on the right side when mowing and the fact I can't mow my 40° sloped back yard. Come to think of it I might not wait 5 years to make the switch.

Leaving clippings on grass is actually healthy and nutritious.. So that's really not a factor unless you let your grass grow way too long.. There are plenty articles on this easy information to find.. Here's just one quick statement from an article that comes up immediately when you search but there are plenty. ------ From the article. Unless you've let the lawn grow excessively long, or the clippings are in thick clumps, grass clippings are a good source of nutrients. Leaving clippings helps save fertilizer costs and thereby prevents ground and surface water contamination.

I've used a Troy-Bilt TB110 with a Briggs and Stratton mower for over 10 years and have had zero problems. The thing was even in a flood. I simply cleaned out the carburetor, replaced the air filter, and I was good to go. The only reason I'm looking for a replacement is that the blade will no longer turn. I just need something that will cut a little under an acre on flat, level ground, with the occasional shrub in the way.

Awesome video and real facts! I also own a Honda Lawn Mower with electric start and will probably last 25 years, if not more. Those facts are also true for Snowblowers, including those chinese made one that last, in some cases, a single use. When I suggest people buy Honda, they always say it is too expensive. I always reply that a used Honda is the same cost as a brand new chinese knockoff and will last 10 x longer.

When deciding on a mower consider the size of your yard and your track record with certain mowers.Had a Honda for 14 years.Tough,durable,and reliable. Since that time I have gone through 3 mowers in 4 years. One was a Craftsman. Carburator issues and water in my oil.6 months and it was already a hunk of junk.Got the run around pertaining to warranty process.i am now going electric.if I get 2 years out of it,then it will be worth it.

For all the reasons listed in this very good video, I chose to get a 12A 20" corded mower for only $140. I have the proper extension cord already, so the only issue will be figuring out the best path in terms of dealing with the cord. No drop in power, no batteries to charge and dispose of, no maintenance. Just a dang cord but I think it's worth it.

J.B., you can still change the oil on the Briggs and Stratton “Check and Add” mower engines. One can maintain one of these engines just like any other. The Check and Add feature in my opinion was introduced to complete with the incoming cordless electric lawnmowers to look more appealing in my opinion. Great video!

@@Tony-fl3rl my first one in 95 lasted 7 seasons and still ran albeit smokey. I learned what not to do and babied the ones after that. Highlight to the Tecumseh ones although many people will turn tail if you mention that name. I gave that one many revs to hear the blast from my crude exhaust I wedged in the muffler. Blue flames! My grandpa finished the deck off and tossed it in his shed. I dug it out and cleaned it up inside and out. Welded the deck. Threw gas in it and it ran like a clock. I used it a couple seasons and sold it for $50 at a yard sale. Don't know why. Just wanted to pass it on.

I have been thinking about an E-Mower, but my 8-10 year old Honda still runs well. I change the oil regularly, it’s a hot mess to do it. My last Honda was a lot easier. And I had it tuned this year, the first time. I have a feeling it’s good for another five to six. What I hate is the damn noise from it.

I have a Greenwork mower 40v 1st gen i think with a lithium battery bought in 2012 and still going strong, the only thing i did was sharpen the blade..so i think it can last more the 5 years as u said if u take care of the battery

Purchased a new Toro with Briggs and Stratton engine as they have been pretty reliable over the years. Used maybe 4 times on my bumpy sloped lawn and it died, When I got it started it was erratic. Opened the lid to find a plastic carb. You can replace cartridges. LOL! pulled the cartridge and one of the brass jets stayed in the hole. Found a Chinese knockoff which has worked with metal carbs. Got it reassembled to have the same problem. Looking at electric found negative critiques matching your evaluation. Checked current mech price for repair. Eighty dollars an hour. SIGH!

Don't beiieve the critiques on electric mowers. They have come a long way. They are now quieter cheaper to operate. The batteries last way longer and they have no problem cutting any type of grass tall or short, wet or dry ! Just think about that the next time you pull the rip chord on a mower and it doesn't start !

@@GarageGear The right front wheel assembly broke from the deck and went under the mower. I'm not sure if the cause was the bolt breaking or the metal fatigue at the deck where the axle plate bolts. I was considering repair, but when I started it up there was a lot of vibration and noise. I think the shaft is damaged. There were a lot of heavy gouges in the axle plate from the blade strikes. It has been a good mower. I got my money's worth.

Bought the Ego 56v. The machine stalls out in even slightly heavy grass and the battery dies after about 20 minutes- not long enough for my average size lawn. After 4 uses I will list it for sale after I take delivery of the gas powered machine I ordered. No more battery mowers for me unless and until lthey demonstrate much better reliability.

Gas in my state is 4.49 a gallon for regular, and around 5 dollars a gallon for premium. For me, keeping up the status quo is not even a consideration. I'm choosing to slowly switch over all of my outdoor power equipment to battery, and hope to sell my gas equipment. In my research, I've decided Makita looks like it makes the best OPE, considering the tools are made in Japan. I know the batteries for them are through the roof expensive, but they will still cost me less then gas costs in the long run. Great video!

I bought a 1999 Sears Craftsman 6.5 HP mulch-er that still starts 1st time in the spring. I have replaced the blade, 2 front wheels over the last 20 years. I am watching this because I fear I may have to eventually replace it since the drive gears ($10.00) are wearing out. All I do is empty the fuel tank and change the oil every year. High gas prices? lol

I was shocked when you said to avoid the Briggs engines. I’m an old buzzard, and from my experience, for walk-behind mowers, there is no better engine than a Briggs. They start better, run longer, and have fewer mechanical problems than any lawn mower engine. Even old folks like me can pull start a Briggs in two pulls (and that includes the “prime pull”) as long as they don’t let the carb gum up over the winter. Over the years, I’ve had just about all of them, but always went back to Briggs.

My Toro Super Bagger with a Honda engine sits barely used in my garage (doesn't start and repaired 2 times). My Briggs & Stratton engine of 9 years starts mostly on the first pull.

@@GarageGear Before the my Honda engine started having problems, it was well maintained and used 3 or 4 times a week. I always used fresh gas and kept the filter clean. The problem isn't that the mower wasn't used enough. The mower failed all on it's own, and the small engine repair shops failed twice to fix it. I ended up buying a new mower in 2013 with the Briggs engine, and it never failed me. No repairs whatsoever.

Have both ego 21 inch and a craftsman 21 inch gas mower. The craftsman is hands down way better in performance. Bagging and mulching. I went back to my craftsman. Now I split the lawn work with my son. He will use ego on the front lawn and I do the backyard with craftsman. I will say that I do love the my ego weed Wacker, leaf blower and hedge trimmers. They perform great.

Hey Epic Savage thanks for sharing this. I 100% agree that I think electric blowers, trimmers and hedgers have it dialed in when it comes to battery power. I have a craftsman lawn mower I got like 6 years ago with the briggs "just top off the oil" engines.. she has about 700 hours on her. I change the oil every 20 hours or so with a little hand pump. It's a good engine... briggs probably feels like it will last longer because most homeowners have no idea what they are doing.. people add way to much oil specially since those engines only use 15oz of oil.

Switched to electric mower for past 3 years but just picked up same super recycler you have liked electric but with load sensing i never got good lift because i mow up to 3 times a week so would always run at lowest speed and would always have to double cut to get the stragglers

I’m on year 21 with my gas mower and it just started making a bad noise. Never changed the oil never changed a filter never stabilized the fuel. All I’ve done is fill the tank and I’ve added oil twice. Has started first pull every time. But after moving to a house with a much smaller yard and putting a pool in that small yard I’m looking to replace that mower with a Makita or dewalt cordless model. Mainly because I hate putting a gas can inside my car once every two years.

What the hell are you talking about ? I bought my Greenworks, 80 volt 21" self propelled mower at Costco. It is a bagger, mulcher and side discharge. It came with two batteries a quick charger that will charge the 4AH battery in less that 45 minutes. It also came with an extra blade. It has a speed adjustment to set your pace on the fly. All with an eight year warranty ! Four years from Greenworks, and an additional four years warranty from Costco ! My lot is 150'X180'. When I mowed it, it used 20% of one battery. You can put both batteries in the unit at once so you don't have to stop to change batteries. It just switches over to the next battery automatically ! It has no problem cutting tall wet grass. No bog down what so ever. It has a "turbo" button that pushes more power to the motor if needed. I've never used it, even in tall wet grass. The price I paid at Costco was, $499.00 ! Maybe you should use some of these mowers before you put your mouth on them !

I am also not a fan of the "just check and add" claim!! The oil has to be changed just like it always had to be. I serviced a mower that the the owner claimed the oil had not been changed for 15 yrs!! It was a Honda with the plastic deck. The oil was black as dirt. It still ran fine.

I bought my ego lawn mower in 2019. My battery is pass my warranty you only get 3 years. Now my battery doesn't work. I have read by others that the battery from back then where having issues. To buy a new battery is about $400 lol. Is like replacing a new battery for a tesla might as well buy a whole new car lol

3 riders and 10+ self propelled mowers over 45 years. I rarely changed oil. All lasted 10+ years until replaced. 3 snow blowers covered that same time. I'm retired Voc. Instructor Electronics and high end commercial projectors/simulators/military weapons systems. My gut was/is repulsed at battery yard equipment.

1) I’ve had both gas and corded electric completely bog down in wet heavy grass 2) my EGO can cut front and back yard on a single battery. Not a huge yard, not a small yard either (1500sqft in the back). Just like a gasser, you need to scale your tools appropriately.

I personally really enjoy the upkeep and maintenance of gas engines. Started as soon as I was big enough to push a mower and it grew from mowers to ATVs and dirt bikes. I love engines. I would be lying though if I said the EGO mower doesn't intrigue me but for the same price I can get a nice Honda gas powered that will last a long time with bare minimum maintenance.

My Dad had a Snapper with an IC Briggs engine. Lasted for years. He sold it to a neighbor when it was about 20 years old. It still ran great.

I'm looking at the AWD 21 inch by Ryobi battery powered. I heard EGO is the best out there BUT.. Lowes treated me bad, so I moved on. I like the AWD option plus it actually comes with 2 batteries & a free weed eater. I just don't know how good Ryobi is vs the others? I'm sure I'll get pick another brand lol

I want to know how long electric mower batteries last. I use about 7 dollars of gas a year. If batteries last 6 years can it beat 42 dollars in gas over the coarse of 6 years? Im even rounding up. Factor in 50 dollars over 6 years for oil, air filter, and spark plugs. Im guessing not even close and still way ahead with gas

I have 2 cycle lawn boys. A 1990 F series engine one. And a 2001 Duraforce. Great mowers. No oil changes, ever! Wouldn’t trade them for any batter or 4 cycle mower. JB, Review a 2 cycle lawn boy and you’ll be hooked!

Looked at dewalt which, due to system lock-in and switching costs would be the most sensible battery for me. They're about a tonne heavy and get squat-minutes out of 2 x 10ah batts. That's crazy not-good. Next best electric does not have an esla in it, it's, well, the consumer, non-luxury hrn. Gonna buy one tomorrow

@@GarageGear glad to share. Your vid entertained and informed. There's a point in the decision process where you feel its imminence. Yesterday was a peak that way, had.to.have amower, to get past the decision! Bought the base model Honda, HRN216VKA, then mowed my < 1/2 acre in the midday GA sun, mowed the weedy dirt in the back, too. It did a good job, the grass looks nice, it worked well. My mowing person had disappeared lo these last 3 - 4 weeks. Now the fee goes toward paying down the Honda. My only wish for the mower would be grippier drive wheels. Maybe a lower price, but I -expect- 10 good years out of it, so I'll be well ahead. Next time, hopefully, it'll be powered by a MrFusion....

If I was to use a electric lawn mower i would use a corded one with usually only tops at about $250 and if you buy on Craigslist you can get it for cheaper. Should also mention you dont have to fear battery pack replacements. I prefer gas. I just fear where this inflation thing goes. As for electric corded electric is the way. Just make sure you use it on a higher amp circuit

WARNING: Battery operated tools are for California compliance only, nothing else. In California, most properties with lawns are under HOA's or sprawling condominium/apartment complexes that are professional managed. They have contractors that mow lawns daily for a living. Battery operated tools need regular use to get your money's worth out of them. A regular homeowner in middle America that uses their tools occasionally will be very disappointed at the lifespan and performance of the tool. Any store in anywhere else in America is just stealing your money by selling them to you.

Great video, I think the area I’m cutting weakly is small enough for a electric, the maintenance made me think of my printer, it must need maintenance to work properly. But like you said. It’s probably junk after a year and 8 uses lol

I had a corded mower for 19 years for my average home lawn and all it needed a few years back was a $2 thrust bearing. The motor died a few weeks ago - just as well really, as the wheels were all quite wobbly. I bought a new corded job; my only spec when looking was a solid catcher, not one of those floppy things. NB - check warranty periods for battery mowers, some are 5 years inc batteries. The key to a long-living battery mower is storage, they cannot be abused like a petrol mower.

got one out in my barn it was two years old when found in the trash,,, battery was bad,,,an guess what they dont make the battery any more,,,you have to buy a new updated mower...me not worth the money i have 5 ac to mow so i would not buy one

What I like when someone says zero emission talking about battery power equipment is when the purest of the purest electricity comes from a coal plant and the origin of the futuristic pure lithium ion battery comes from one of the least environmentally friendly production process, way worse than gasoline. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Sad thing is Honda has discontinued its lawn mower line which sucks as they are the best mowers on the market. I am considering getting an Echo battery electric mower as a backup for my business though.

Hey wjc! You can still knab a Honda until about September. My dad has one of those echo mowers. It took him a little over 4 years to kill the battery. It would t charge anymore. That was on minimal use on a vacation home lawn. Figured I’d give you the heads up. Thanks for watching

Last year I had a Kobalt electric mower for a 3k sq ft lawn and it was a struggle in later summer months. I ended up getting a second battery half way through the season because the grass got so thick it was bogging down the mower and draining quick. And the blade started getting dull after each mow. This yr i was able to find a honda hrx vya. The difference is night and day. I followed your break in advice and apreciate your videos on honda mowers.

If a gas mower breaks down it can usually be repaired for cheap? If a electric mower breaks down such as battery failure and/or electronics maybe it can be repaired but at what cost? I'll stick with my Toro mower with the personal pace propelled that's got a 6.5 hp Tecumseh engine.

Not really sure where you are getting the electric lasting only 5 years or the cost difference? I have had an ego for 5 years, warranty is 5 years and I am on original battery and it still holds close to or the same among of charge as when I first got it. There is no maintenance costs on electric except for the blades. You also have to add the cost of gas at approaching $6.00 per gallon for the gas option. I would love to know how you arrived at the life of and cost difference between the two?

@@GarageGear His article has contradicting information. While it is informative, this is the one thing that stands out to me. First part of the article he says this "Lithium-ion batteries depend upon the charging cycles because they can only go 500 cycles before getting out of juice. The best practice for lithium-ion batteries should be charging them to their full capacity and then using them until they get discharged. Repeat this cycle; this will enhance the battery life." and then point 1 right below he says this "Always use a lawnmower when batteries are fully charged. When batteries are not 100% charged, using a lawnmower would not affect the lawnmower’s mechanical components, but it will surely cause battery life problems; using a fully charged lawnmower is recommended." So which is it, use the battery until its fully depleted, or when its 100% charged. You cant do both if a lawnmower only comes with one battery, or if you use your lawnmower and you use half the battery charge. Or when you are done for the day mowing, you then just let your lawnmower sit running so the battery is 100% used up.

@@GarageGear Thats my problem, I do over think things. I did send an email to the person to explain about the contradiction he had in his article. To either clarify what he mean, or if I am reading the information wrong. As well, I currently have still in the box an electric mower and my current gas mower I picked up from the shop. And will have to make the decision, which one do I keep. Using store points I had accumulated, I saved $70 off the sale price of the electric mower. And the reviews of the Worx Nitro all seem to be great. Its a version with a steel deck and a bagger., and 2 batteries in serial for the hour run time Same width, same height adjustment, etc. It just doesnt have an engine. Your video, among many others, will help me with my decision. Do you stay with the tried and true, or go with something new that can work just as good, or possibly better?

First of all, I am not a "Lets all go green and save the planet" lunatic. As a matter of fact, I am about the opposite. I got tired of burying a new gas mower almost every year, sometimes more that once a year. I usually bought the ones that were $140-200, and they never lasted. Adding oil, changing oil, having to go to the gas station because I am out of gas, changing the spark plug, always wondering if the fluid would leak out when I had to sharpen the blade, and the real kicker, having to pull the rope 5-20 times to start the darn thing. Finally, at the beginning of last summer, and messing with my gas mower trying to figure out why ANOTHER mower wouldn't start (and my shoulder hurting from the pain of pulling the thing at least 100 times), I decided to try an electric mower. I bought a Worx mower from Menards for $275. The thing is so light and quiet that it is a joy to use. Sharpening the blade is so much easier and I never have to worry about my ears ringing after finishing my yard. Never have to check any fluids or worry about spilling them on my driveway causing yet another stain. My batteries that came with the mower last about 80% of the yard. Fortunately I have batteries from all my Worx hand tools (jigsaw, hedge trimmer, drill, leaf blower) that I can just pop into the mower to finish the yard without worrying about spilling or burning myself on a hot engine. Oh, and I just ordered some larger batteries (third party company) to use as spares for my mower which cost less than $50. Coming to the end of the second season of using my battery powered mower, and still a joy to use. Even my neighbors are impressed with my mower. So needless to say, I do not believe your opinions are accurate nor objective.

I bought my gas mower in 2009 for $249. It hasn't failed me once and still going with no end in sight. Changing the oil, air filter and spark plug is nothing. I had a battery powered mower up until 2009 and was very happy to get rid of it. At least the new electric mowers are designed to be able to easily switch batteries unlike the one I had.

Electric have really pulled ahead in last 2 years. Anyone with common sense should understand their needs, If you have more than a quarter of an acre to mow i would probably look into gas if you want a push mower, UNLESS you really want to buy more batteries. NOW if you went 40v ryobi AND got the leafblower and trimmer kit that gets you another battery, but then you're really buying into the system. I have a lot size of around 11k square feet. My 40v ryobi 20 in works well. it can make it through thick stuff really well especially when it spins up to the high setting, and the 6 AH battery can handle my entire lawn with plenty to spare. Mulches quite well. I could see the cheaper 13 inch ones struggling on my yard, but those are really meant for condo living folks who have a 1k square foot patch. I will say to anyone that the Ryobi 18v string trimmers are garbage!!!!! 1 year and i have to make my second warranty claim. The auto cutting system has ripped off the guard twice now, no issues with electrics or ability. Just the stupid auto cutting blade.

I’m 80, have a small yard and ready to move to a electric mower. It only takes 20 min with gas, but bulky mower, cleaning, gassing up , mtce be gone. Moving to quiet batt mower this spring.

Yep those Briggs engines are the worst. If you have an old quantum sidevalve on your mower take good care of it. Those quantum engines can last a decade easily. But not what they're making now.

Usually buried under snow in Buffalo? To me that sounds like over 50% of the year Buffalo has snow accumulation. Half of 365 days is 182.5 days which is over 6 months. I think that the panels would NOT usually be buried under snow.

I've tried the electric mower and electric snowblower. Definitely didn't work at all. Mower can't cut tall grass very well, and batteries die faster with a load. Not to mention 1-2 hour charging time. I'd rather mower or snowblow now rather then later.

once again great vid love it. I like the point about the coal plants for electric use most dummies are clueless about it. Will be getting a new honda 217hrx next week and will be following all of your tips just got my amsoil 5w30 small engine oil 11$ a quart at nappa will run the honda oil do my 30 min run and then switch to the amsoil.

Great video, excellent points. I shopped around and researched a lot before steering away from a battery mower. I ended up buying a Toro Timemaster gas mower for my lawn. I was worried about battery life and power on my hilly lawn. The battery technology is way too new for me to dive in right now.

Hey Sean this is now the second time I’ve heard of this. Check your rubber gasket at the bottom of the dipstick. Could be out of place or busted. Should be hard to replace. Let me know what you find. Thanks bud!

Greenworks batteries must be damn good if they are willing to give a four year warranty, and Costco up's the warranty to eight years ! That's unheard of ! By the way, they also give a four year warranty on the machine itself. Which Costco has kicked that up to eight years as well ! Now, that's called standing behind your product !

Yes, battery powered mowers DO cost more. But IMHO, they're worth it. I can't speak to all the other brands, but I bought the cheapest EGO mower and will never buy a gas mower again. Better design, ease of use, low noise, and low maintenance all influenced my decision. I've got a big yard, so I can't cut it all in one battery charge, but you know what? I never cut it all in one day anyway. I wear out before I get it all cut, so stopping to recharge the battery isn't an impediment. Also, the EGO has a headlight - I can cut after dark when the ambient temperatures are cooler. So I won't argue that the cost of an electric mower is LOWER than that of a gas mower - it isn't. But the extra expense was well worth it to me!

1. Not sure where you got the idea an electric mower only lasts 5 years. In fact as long as the motor runs (like my electric car) just get a new battery when needed and keep going. 2. Sure when I charge my battery I’m using electricity from the grid but, studies have shown in the long run electric cars(and mowers) still pollute far less.

Maintenance on a gas mower what's that lol. I get them from the scrap some times. Most of the time it's a plugged carburator. I don't do maintenance on them I add oil run them I have yet to have one pop because of not changing oil.
