One of the most frequently asked questions I get is what I think about the extremely successful "fashion watch" brands like MVMT, Hugo Boss, Michael Kors, Daniel Wellington, The Fifth, Viscero, Armani etc. Well, the answers is a little complicated because there are (of course) some things I dislike about them, but there also I feel some positive things that traditional watch brands can learn from these brands too. In this video I also share my opinion on 6 brands that offer much cooler, stylish, better made and truly iconic watches costing from as less a $50 to $500.

maybe these traditional watch brands like seiko, citizen and orient should market more towards the younger generation by sponsoring youtube men's fashion channels like alpha m, rmrs, tmf and lots others.

I'm 25, never had a watch. I didn't even know that watches could work without a battery. :/ My girlfriend wanted to get me a MVMT watch for Christmas, so I told her to wait for me to do a little research first. Thank God I found this channel!!! I bought a Seiko 5 SNK809 instead. It should be delivered by next week, can't wait to have it in my wrist! Thanks TGV!

I hope u did ur research well. And know what to expect. Seiko 5 is a nice choice for entry level automatic watch, but for entry level automatic watch they r generally more inaccurate than quartz watch. And it’s normally for seiko 5 to be -/+30 seconds per day. But don’t worry a lot them r -/+5 per day. Hope u get a good one, congrats on ur first mechanical watch

+-30 seconds per day is accurate enough for most users. If you really want the accurateness, you will not use a quartz, but your smartphone instead.

Bambino for a girl? At 40.5mm, wouldn't that be too big for a girl? The Orient Cybele or Sun And Moon Petite at around 34mm would be a better choice. Or, the guy could also have went with a Tissot, even if a quartz at that price point. Better name recognition than Orient and Seiko, probably would save the girlfriend some explaining to her yuppies friends. That said, I'm currently have my eyes set on an Orient Contemporary Open Heart RA-AR0004S (would have gone with the Bambino, if not for the 21mm lugs, mineral crystal, and no exhibition case back; or a Tissot Visodate if not for the 3x price vs the Orient; need that extra money to finance the Seiko --> ), and a Seiko Prospex Samurai "Blue Lagoon" SRPB09K1 Limited Edition.

Heres my story. Im a 17 years old. One day, my puma digital watch was broken. The strap broke off. I didnt have a watch at the time. I was planning on getting a new one ofcourse. Few of my friends, had Fossil chronograph watches. They look pretty good, although theyre a little huge for my wrist, its still a decent looking watch. Plus, they get alot of compliments wearing those fossil watches. I later went to a watch store and saw a nice looking fossil chrono with a black case and brown strap. I put that in my personal wishlist. Skip through a couple weeks, a youtube channel i like was sponsored by MVMT watches. So, i thought, why not have a look, my brain was saying "They trust MVMT so might aswell go for it". I went to the website and saw a beautiful 'diver' looking watch called the 'modern sport' with the black dial and black case. It was so tempting on getting that. It was 145 bucks but i thought, its a well known watch so thats reasonable. But something, just something, tells me "not yet". I didnt go for it. I was looking through youtube, finding watch reviews and thats where i stumbled upon your channel. It was a video about watches under 200 dollars or something. Cant remember. Then, i started watching more and more of your videos, i subscribed to you. I started learning more and more about horologic and watches as a whole. I was becoming more and more like an amateur watch enthusiast. Then i saw a video of the orient bambino. and i think, "man, this watch is a beauty, a nice dresswatch with automatic movement and quite affordable too. I then pulled the trigger and went ahead and bought one. Though, i didnt use my own money, i didnt have money. My parents bought it for me. It was my first ever real watch. I was thirsty for more now that i am getting deeper into the watch world. I went a head and bought a casio f-91w with my own money. I dont know why but i was enjoying the casio more than he bambino. I did once plan on selling it but i just couldnt, i couldnt because...its the watch i bought when TGV introduced me to the watch scene. Now, i have a seiko 5 snkl23 and a casio ca-53w on the way. (both bought with my own mney) Im planning on paying off the bambino before i go for the next treasures, Thank You TGV for saving me and introducing me to the watch world. p.s, sorry for my english

The success of junk watches like these re-branded generic chinese watches known as DW, only proves that most buyers know nothing about watches. I am pretty sure no one would buy a Chevy Aveo, paying the price of a Mercedes Benz C Class. There is nothing wrong with the Aveo, but if GM price it as much as as a C class, then everything is wrong. So, why would any one pay 250 for a DW? It worth no more than 15 dollars in the best of cases!

I'm Swedish so I heard a lot about DW... I got a cheap 20 $ watch (which I like) from my girlfriend for christmas and I've been watching a lot of videos about watches ever since. As you said there's no real marketing to young people from great brands. I had to look for myself for what a affordable watch is. I bought a Citizen eco drive a couple of days ago, so glad I didn't buy a DW or whatever. It was the first none "fashion watch" I bought. Even tough I'm pretty poor there are still some great watches for my pricerange which I didn't know before. Thinking about buying a Tissot or a Seiko 5 as my next one. Videos like this got me interested in watches and watchmaking.

I love how you stressed out the need for the watch industry to tap into the market of these fashion watches are serving. It's all about demand and supply. When there's a demand for it, these fashion watches will thrive. Credit is given where its due, it is a booming market and a good business model for brands like DW and MVMT. If things are to change, traditional watchmakers should take this into consideration and reevaluate their offerings. Good content TGV!

A friend from work got me in to watches. He said "A watch is one of few accessories that a man can & should wear". Soon after, he ordered my first watch for me, an SKX007. I fell in love with the watch & history of it, now i feel naked without a watch. After I got into watches we used to talk about TGVs latest video the day after release. The first thing i notice when i meet new people is the watch they are wearing (if they are wearing one)!

Tristano, great vid. Most "horological snobs" don't understand the points you made. I own a Daniel Wellington. It sits with my SKX, Seiko 5, Rado, my dad's old Citizen and an Apple Watch. Watch-wise, I only plan to save up for a vintage Omega and a GMT Batman. Truthfully, I really enjoy the DW - it's the Dapper (ha). Blue minute/hour hands, roman numerals, small date window @ 6 o'clock. Pretty sure it's based on the Richard Lange (232025). But I love wearing it. I think more people my age would care about traditional watch making if snob enthusiasts made it less daunting to join the hobby, which seems to be filled with insecure "my taste is better than yours". It makes people run a mile away. Of course, most watch enthusiasts aren't snobs, not at all. But it seems there's always posts and comments out there by people mocking those who buy fashion watches. It doesn't hurt to educate (like this vid!) as opposed to making fun of. If wearing a fashion watch makes someone feel happy, is that anything to knock? At the end of the day, enthusiasts buy watches for the same reasons a typical consumer buys a fashion watch - you'll put your money in whatever you THINK will make YOU feel happy, whether that's an MVMT Voyager or a Patek Gondolo.

Im 19, and i own a DW. it was my first watch that i spent more than 20 bucks from Walmart on. i really liked the minimalist look and that got me into watches. i started googling and found the likes of patek, iwc, vacheron. i fell in love with dress watches in particular and really got into it. now my collection consists of anvintage omega, hamilton, longine, and others. i may not have enough for some of these "luxury watches because im a college student, but i thank DW for getting me into it despite how shit of a watch it is. SO we should be THANKING some of these brands for getting people into watches.

At the end of the day wearing a watch has to meet the needs of the user. I grew up with the traditional watches but the big change came with the Casio digital watches. You could do so much more like setting alarms but in the end the digital display really bugged me. Then with computers & mobile phones I realised that time was all around me and watches seemed to lose their appeal and I learned to live without them. You could say I was rejecting consumerism and saying I don't need a watch to define me. But now (thanks to your channel) I am coming back and just enjoying selecting watches that I like whether they are functional & practical or just have a particular look or style that appeals to me.

I'm quite heavily invested in watches both time and money wise. But I still can't see why people talk about "fashion watches" like it's a bad thing. Most people today wears watches as a fashion statement. And the look is the most important part for most people, including my self. I will wear a Daniel Wellington over a only traditional brand with mountains of heritage if I happen to find the DW better looking. I think that's party of the issue with a lot of the older watch manufacturer, that they're stopped following trends at about the same time people stopped wearing watches.
@elzafir
@elzafir 5 жыл бұрын
They meant "fashion brand" watch. They are "bad" because they sell the brand, not the watch. The watch could be a $20 watch made in some assembly line in China (which TRUE in case of DW) and people will buy it for more than $200 because of the brand, and definitely NOT for the quality of the watch. Buying a DW is the equivalent of spending $120 for an A.P.C./Kanye West' "Hip-Hop" plain white shirt. People can justify it all they want, but the truth of the matter is Kanye and Filip Tysander (founder of DW) are laughing their way to the bank. You should look at NOMOS if you think proper watch companies are "old" and not "trendy". There are affordable watch companies that don't swindle you like DW. Try Brathwait, Tisell, Junghans, Bulova, Orient, etc. They all make Bauhaus-inspired watches like DW, but some of them have sapphire crystal, automatic movements, etc. for less than $200. (now THAT's quality). The problem is people THINK that DW is quality ONLY because of marketing and are willing to spend $200 on them, but in reality they are being sold $20 garbage. Even then, they are not willing to educate themselves and still defend the company. Sigh..humans.

This. I honestly think the horology world is pretty ridiculous with the way it comes down on "fashion watches." I mean, these people who are criticizing are buying mechanicals that can't even keep accurate time for thousands of dollars on the basis of "heritage" (isn't that also "buying for the brand" just as much as buying a DW for the brand???). And they have the audacity to laugh at people paying an extra Franklin or two for aesthetics? Lol, please. Reality is, a fashion watch tells time pretty damn accurately, and that along with lookin' good is all anyone wants from them, if that's what they're buying. There's nothing wrong with it. If you like a fashion watch, get a fashion watch. Anyone who would look down on your for it is a jerk anyway, and most likely is in NO position to be criticising how much money you spent on your watch.
@MysteriousSamurai
@MysteriousSamurai 5 жыл бұрын
@@catv9085 No, it's not the same. When you buy a timepiece for the brand, you don't buy it for the "brand" as DW brand, which means just the brand name super highly marketed, you buy it for the brand WHICH COMES WITH THE QUALITY, heritage and craftsmanship, not just the brand name. Same as you buy some quality clothing for the brand but which also comes with high-quality material and work, not just and advertised name. It's the same as you buy a Rolls-Royce. You don't buy it just for the name, right? Not to mention that many high-quality watches that has a heritage, they are considered an investment because their price highly increases by the time, and this is a fact. You just buy whatever you want, it's your money, but don't judge people who are passionate about time and watches who clearly know a lot more and they "cry" when companies like DW, MVT and others just take advantage of marketing, uninformed people etc and sells the $3 crap for $200. It's just sad.

@@catv9085 You think you're paying extra for aesthetics? Those cheaply manufactured watches have cheap aesthetics, their straps can't be compared to the luxurious leather that you could be getting from proper companies for the same money. That's just one of the differences but like TGV says, you can't really judge a watch unless you're worn it. Hopefully you'll see for yourself some day, I've already had my experience with fashion watches. Next time you buy a watch, consider buying from a brand with a heritage, just to prove to yourself that you're right, I'm positive you'll have a good experience.
@BourbonInhibitions
@BourbonInhibitions 5 жыл бұрын
Cat V The difference is fashion watches come and go with trends. DW won't be around in 10 years whereas brands like Tissot, Seiko, Citizen, etc. have maintained their stays in the industry when watches have never been more superfluous. You make a good point about if you like it, buy it. I am all for that approach to watch purchasing. However, seasoned watch enthusiasts shake their heads at seeing fellow enthusiasts spend so much on such little in return. How much do you think you'd get reselling a DW or MVMT? Next to nothing. Think it will last 20-25 years? Not a chance in hell. Regardless of what you spend, when you buy a watch from a brand that speaks for itself in quality and heritage, which you seem to think aren't significant factors to consider, you are undoubtedly making a better financial decision based on resale value alone, not the mention the myriad of other reasons. I have looked at DW, Vincero, MVMT, all of those, and I can find better looking, better made watches in that same price point with that similar, or better, look all day long. People who act like these fashion watch makers are breaking the mold with watch styling just have not searched other watches thoroughly.

i opened up daniel wellington recently. It has a citizen miyota gl20 quartz movement inside. which can be found for under 10$. while a seiko 7s26 watch thats similarly priced or even cheaper has a 30$ proven automatic movement.

New to this "hobby" just in the last few days actually, but loving it so far. Several years ago I bought the most expensive watch I've ever purchased, a Citizen chronograph (with an E820 movement I believe) after falling in love with a colleague's Breitling and realizing I could not afford to buy one myself. This watch has been mistaken for something much more expensive many times. After my cat knocked it off the kitchen counter and it stopped dead, I sent it in for repair back in June 2021, and it's early December 2021 now. I learned this week that my watch is finally hitting the bench after awaiting parts for five months. The excitement of having it back soon led me research how I could make sure it keeps running forever, and I discovered a whole new world.

I guess it boils down to education. The younger generation knows absolutely nothing about watches. I know because I used to be one of them. Luckily I found your channel before I started making purchases.

Yeah not only that but only a select few will actually take the time to research a watch. They would rather just go to a dealer and buy something shiny with a big name attached to it. We must find a way to spark their interests.

Yes I agree, I almost bought a fashion watch because I did not know better and thought it looked nice. Luckily with some research and channels like these, I decided to buy an Orient watch instead, which I do not regret at all.

The reason brands like DW are so popular is that they are advertised all over social media - mainly instagram. All top instagrammers are made to push these watches in their posts and I guess its made people buy a tonne of them.

People who buy those watches basing merely on advertising they saw on instagram basically know nothing about watches. In the car industry analogy, it would be like someone paying the price of a Mercedes Benz C class to get a Chevrolet Aveo, just because he/she saw a cool ad on instagram. At 4:55 we can see just how poor the craftsmanship is (if there was any to begin with), the cheapest metal used to make the case, the generic movement and so on.

Thank you. You have inspired and educated me towards my first vintage watch purchase. Nothing too fancy but was able to find a vintage (mid-1960s) 10K (solid gold) Hamilton Masterpiece that I am in loved with (the patina on the dial and the manual movement are amazing). And this week I bought a vintage Lucien Piccard (14K - solid rose gold) also from the mid 60s. Thank you!!!!

chrisdiscodude I'm working on my friend too. He is hoping to get two $50 chronographs from amazon. It's my job to convince him that a mechanical piece would be better. (Time to go send pictures of watch movement to him)

The collection currently includes Seiko SNK803, Seiko Orange Monster, Citizen c650 Skyhawk, Oris TT Diver.. and have decided next step has to be a Mechanical Chrono, and looking at Hamilton Jazzmaster - therefore a pretty smug grin on my face at my choices BEFORE i found the Gentry.... Great stuff as ever TGV

Gary Sleep -The jazz master is an attractive watch in a good size. But, look into the Swatch Group story, basically an investment group that raided the swiss watchmaking industry when it was weak due to a double whammy (quartz and mid-late 70s recession). The group then set about eliminating ompetition all while proclaiming to have saved the Swiss watchmaking industry. Look into Swatch Group, they own the Hamilton brand, and decide if that's the kind of company you want to support.

I have always thought watches are cool and although wanting one never felt convinced on spending hundreds of dollars to get something for my wrist. Well now I have started looking into it and stumbled onto this channel. I must say watching videos on this channel has gotten me just so exited to get a watch I can't take it anymore. Awaiting in the mail this second a Orient Star Classic will be showing up soon. To be fair the excellent work on this channel has inspired and given me confidence in finding my first watch over $40.00. I truly thank you. `Anthony

@Zestypanda Stop being a watch snob! A good watch is one that tells time reliably for someones budget. A $50 Casio Quartz watch is more accurate and cheaper to maintain (just replace battery every couple years) than almost any watch over $1,000!

"They bought their first SARB, or they bought their first SXK..." TGV, Seiko is the brand that can reach people. I know their marketing isn't perfect, especially in the west, But Seiko is the gateway drug, they make awesome watches anyone can buy. On a tangent, last week I was in India for work. Every guy there wears a watch. They wear quartz Citizens and GShocks and all kinds of stuff, but every guy has a watch on. These are IT guys who have 2 or 3 smartphones and a laptop with the time, but they all have watches on.

I own a Vivienne Westwood Cranbourne with the gold strap which uses a Swiss Ronda movement and it really turns heads from both watch and fashion enthusiasts, had loads of positive comments on it. I have recently purchased a Bulova 98A244 for everyday use especially in the gym as it is much less formal than the Cranbourne and has a chronograph which I find extremely useful for personal training. I'm just getting into the fine art and understanding of horology and your videos help immensely. Thank you 👍
