I own a CS, this breed isn't to be taken lightly before purchase, I had to reinforce my windows with very thick Plexiglass because he would have broken through my normal windows. it is the biggest cuddle bear to anyone he accepts as friend/family but its behaviour is VERY different towards anyone else. even people he loves and accepts who aren't part of the family will be considered as intruders if they would wander on the property. for example my neighbours, he loves them to bits and will always want to play with them and hug them when we go for a walk BUT every time they enter my garden he freaks out, he goes full guard mode and only after saying the magic command (to reassure him it's not a threat) he won't attack them, what does he do?: he stands on his hind legs and bumps his head on the windows while barking and growling very very aggressively until the magic command is said. never forget before getting a breed like this (LGD breed) that ONLY the pack is allowed on the premises, no matter how well he knows the person, he WILL keep even the close family friends off ur property even if he knows them well, he will only let them on it when someone of the pack is present and shows the person is allowed on it.

I have an XL GSD with the same problem. As a GSD breeder/Slav I've been heavily interested in this breed off of protection stand points alone. I cant tell you how many stray dogs, Pits, carless uncontrolled neighbors pits go around our runners and outside kennels especially with litters of pups that set off all of the moms even had one of our dogs attacked, I cant be there ready to defend them so I was looking for a breed large enough to defend not only my pack but my gf when Im at work because she wants nothing to do with my guns.

@@toska459 well i own a CS that is considered a mild temperate one. And I have never met a dog that goes berzerk like mine does when someone is on the premisses or he considers a threat. I wouldnt recommend this breed for that type of guarding because i think it might be an overkill. I think an LGD breed would be suited for your needs. But out of my personal experience, I wouldnt get a CS, if it is "mild" tempered as mine is then it would be suited. But the temperament in CS is like a lottery. You usually only know their true temperament after a year. Mine was the mildest male of all the males. I brought him to my house at 10 weeks old and the day after i got him he was already guarding my property. He attacks everything that comes on the property. And i mean everything. Humans. Dogs. Cats. Rats. Even birds. Their speed and stealth is amazing for their size. But the pure strength and determination they have is unlike anything i ever saw before. For example: a rat ran in my garden and escaped my dog through a small hole under my door... my dog ran into the door full force and it bent the hinges. The door fell to the ground and he got in the shed anyways to get the rat... if a CS cant get to something... they find a way to get to it. I can keep giving examples like this solely based on my mild tempered CS. I won the lottery and got a mild tempered one. Imagine you dont win it. (Or win considering how you look at it) are you up for that? My dog loves and protects anything he accepts. Even our 2 cats. But he would immediatly attack anything else, even people he knows if they arent part of our pack.

I'm from the UK and moved to Spain when I was 15. We re-homed a 2-3 year old female stray CS, GSD mix that worked as a guard dog at a scrap yard (she had only just recovered from a broken front left leg, we don't know how it happened because she was abandoned by her previous owners). She had an amazing temperament and was friendly with all the family and family friends. We trusted her so much we would leave the gate open at the top of our drive for her and another rescue dog (a 1 year old female podenco) to roam. At this time we lived in the mountains where a shepherd led his flock freely, sometimes even through your gates onto the acres of land each property comes with, always followed by a monstrous male CS (I once watched our female CS/GSD fight this very dog both on their hind legs because she followed our mischievous podenco towards his flock). Around 1 year into our family living there 2 of my friends visited from the UK and one night we went to my mom and dad's bar for a drink, we decided to walk back and on our 1 hour long journey through the twisty dirt roads, ahead to our left a huge silhouette lit by the moon was watching us from atop a large grass hill (It was the property of the local shepherd), I had to call my mom to pick us up as my friends would go no further. A few months later our female CS/GSD was in season and I was home alone, outside the podenco and the female springer spaniel we brought from the UK were barking so I went to investigate. My heart almost fell out of my ass, this male CS was stood no more than 20 yards away on the sloped drive and I thought it either kills my dogs or I protect them. I approached it warily and stroked his head, him ignoring me I placed a hand on either shoulder and attempted pushing him backwards up the sloped drive to which he was rooted. Long story short it was the sweetest dog ever and with his consent I walked him back to his property three times within 2 hours as he kept escaping through a hole and beating me back to my house entering through another hole. I think the morale of my rather long story is that with my limited experience albeit in my opinion with real working CS's, they are very friendly outside of their work and once I can convince my fiancée I'll be getting myself one now I'm back in the UK.

@@curleex3838 It took years of patience and knowledge but also love to the dog. But its one of those dogs you have once. People were scared to be near and may rightfully be so, his eyes were natural yellow but his thickness of fur also gave him an advantage of size. The howling at night when the moon was out was a crazy experience but kept the Coyotes away from the House which was helpful instead of shooting at them.

These comments show how weak average human has become in modern times. I have a similar Anatolian Shepherd and yes he is aggressive towards strangers as one should be but much more logical than most dogs and he wouldn't ever hurt a kid or bark at a dog that is playful towards him. Y'all just lack a spine, Caucasian dogs have an integrity, stature and soul that most humans could only portray in works of fiction. These dogs would instantly give their life for you. Y'all don't deserve them.

People like you are the reason kids get mauled by dogs. Instead of you to accept the risks that come with having a certain dog and try to take precautions, you go on the defence with "Humans are the problem. Dogs always want to cuddle and talk about rainbows and shit". Well, news flash, dogs have both aggressive and cute side. It's how they're designed. And there's nothing wrong with that.

I got the Caucasian Ovcharka without ever owning a dog before. With determination, time to care and train the dog and living on the country side with few neighbors i chose this breed. I reasearched the breed long and carefully, visited breeders and met several owners. After this i bought a smaller line female that should have been slightly milder in temperament. She was smaller (50kg) but not in any way mild temperamented. That was a steep learning curve that most normal people would have backed away from. That was 7 years ago and today i live with 2 Caucasians. My youngest female is whats refered as a military line of dog. That line is among the highest level of dog ownership there is. With that said, would i recommend my journey to novis people who dream about the ultimate guard dog? My answer is crystal clear: NO! Don't even think about it. Gain experience with another large guard dog breed first like a German Shepherd, Rottweiler or Doberman. I got thru by dedication and the support of professional dog trainers. Today it is mostly smooth sailing all though i have chosen more challenging lines of the breed. But the road has been long and bumpy to put it in diplomatic words.

I'm really impressed that you managed to take on such a task as a first-time owner and succeed as you have! That is a testament to your commitment and willingness to learn and grow as an owner. I have two as Caucasian Ovcharkas as well. One is an intense, gorgeous male with the "classic" hardcore CO temperament. He was challenging from day one (at just under 8 weeks old) and the other is a fierce, but much easier, female. I am very experienced and disciplined as an owner and have experience with all kinds of dogs including giant breeds. I don't recommend this breed for pretty much anyone. The fantasy of having one of these dogs is different than the reality of being a responsible owner of an extremely powerful and aggressive guardian breed like this. I've seen so many unprepared owners get in over their heads, and oftentimes the dog pays the price, which usually ends in them being destroyed or abandoned. It happens way too often and as one who truly loves this breed, it breaks my heart everytime. If a potential buyer doesn't need a dog that does what a CO was bred to do, it's my advice they seek a different breed.

Absolutely not. Only get a CS if you have all of the following: lots of experience, a large outdoor space for them to roam, enough time to train and socialize them properly, money to pay for their food and vet bills, a real need for a dog like this (i.e. not just "loving" it or living in a dangerous area) Pick a breed that is actually suited to your living situation. Getting a CS as your first dog because you live in a rough part of town (assuming the dog would live in an apartment) is about as intelligent as getting a jack russel terrier because you want to herd a flock of hamsters...

Dear Bern, no, they were not. The today known form of Caucasian Shepherds were formulated after the Second World War.
@Irakli_
@Irakli_ 2 жыл бұрын
Firstly, they are Georgian, not Russian .There is a version that the Georgian shepherd existed even in the XII-XIII centuries. In general, this name - Caucasian Shepherd - was given to this breed by Russians. However, we can freely say that this is our (Georgian) dog. In Soviet times, no one was allowed to call them Georgian Shepherd. Secondly, they are known to be wolf killers, not bear killers. Lastly, In 1937 this breed was transported from the Caucasus to Russia. Why? The answer is simple - the Caucasian Shepherd is not pretentious, it can withstand frost freely, therefore, they were considered ideal dogs for supervisors of Stalin's prisons and Gulags. Russians bred them and we can say that they turned these beasts into completely useless dogs. They still managed to spread them all over Caucasus, but these mongrel dogs turned out to be very weak against wolves, they could not handle the responsibility due to not having the instincts they needed. This led to a decrease in the number of Caucasian Shepherds, and it was on the verge of extinction for a while, but with great effort, this breed was saved.

As the producers of this channel are living in Europe and are not native speakers, their prounanciation is not perfect. This is why we use a text to speech program.

I have a Caucasian named Ivan, he turned 3 yrs old this month, 4/2021, he's 200lbs and he has an extreme temperament, his parents are from old Military working lines in Russia. I got him @ 8 weeks old and socialized the crap out of him, didn't do any good. He is extremely aggressive with people and all other animals. He was raised with 3 other dogs, but I have to keep him separated now from them otherwise he will do a lot of damage to them. I'm the only one in my family that can handle him, the other's he just ignores, that's because I spent a whole lot of time with him while he was a puppy, and I still do now. He goes beserk when I bring over anybody to the house and has to be locked up, my friends think that I have a lion, lol. A very hard dog to live with and he's a big liability as well! I would not recommend this breed of dog unless you get one with a mild temperament, where you can handle them a lot better, but the ones with an extreme temperament or hard temperament are no joke!
