I took your advice and I'd like to say thank you. I picked up the most comfortable watch I've ever worn since my Casio a158 classic steel, the seiko5 snk357 blue 36mm😍. Had a recent strange NEED to own a gold watch😐🤷 and picked up the perfectly subdued gold watch I've ever seen, Seiko5 snxl72. it's perfect 37mm textured pattern dial not flashy. Put it on and I'm instantly sent back to the 70's😁 -also added a blue snxs77🐍 with that UFO case. Unreal watches at these prices . Thanks again mate🍻

The only time that worked out very well was with the legendary now discontinued Seiko skx007 black on strap😍 -huge watch at 42mm will probably be my only watch in this size but what a classic tool watch iso certified and tough as nails with a non winding with no hack.. that's the way it should be. So manly and tough. Shake it, set it and wear the darn thing with pride✔️😁🍻

another great video, and many of those points I also found in the last 7 years that I contracted this 'disease'. After going thru many watches from cheap to mid range expensive (where I live a Rolex is only a dream) I have sold out almost my entire collection and am left with 2 daily wearers an SNK805 and a DW5000 G-Shock and a vintage Doxa as a special occasion dress watch (it was a gift from my wife). I've learned that the SNK suits my wrist the best and I am not afraid to wear it as it was cheap to buy and so it has been with me for more than 5 years and it still makes me happy when I wear it!

Excellent presentation! This should be a perquisite for all watch newbies. I just got into the hobby about a year ago and one of the first things I did was buy a few cool looking watches with no research at all. Which is totally unlike me. If I had it to do over again I would have taken my time and probably picked completely different models. Some looked great on line, but not too great on me. As for the watch snobs, they occupy all parts of society. Motorcyclists, bicyclists, you name it. There is that fringe group in each hobby that gets pleasure denigrating others who don't have precisely the same taste. I started my own channel recently and have reviewed $20.00 Chinese pieces. Quarts, solar, kinetic, and hamster driven. If you enjoy something that is all that matters. Keep up the good work!

In the summer of 1988, I was walking with my would-be wife in Lucerne. We passed by a Bucherer store and noticed a Rolex Submariner (ref. 5513 no date) for sale, only 1,550 CHF of the time. I didn't know the reference and didn't research that watch. However, I liked the aesthetics and bought it on impulse. Now, 31 years later of pure love, both with the watch and with my wife, it has become a very desirable and collectible reference. Besides having enjoyed the timepiece all this time, it has also become an investment (a kind of) since I will never sell it because it reminds me of that wonderful weekend I spent with my girlfriend a few months before getting married. Ciao from Italy.

To read a bit between the lines, I think most of the time in this video, you didn't even talk about watches per se. When I listen to you talking about watches, I see an expression of deep passion for something, it resonates in almost every word, every expression of yours. I think it's quite rare seeing something like this. Within that deep appreciation one finds the essence of life itself. From watching your videos, I can tell that you really LOVE watches. That love you, probably not only, but also found in wrist watches is absolutely contagious because of how almost emotionally you express it. I know next to nothing about watches but you really made me want to buy one. Not just buy one for the sake of having it, but rather get one to experience and share the same passion that you express. Well done.

I love your videos! I found "grey market" watches are just "new watches" at a lower prices. A new watch is the same regardless of where you buy it from. A warranty will always be a hassle regardless the retailer. For many watch models like a Seiko 5 which won't have issues in a lifetime, a warranty is less useful.

Or sometimes "true love" is when you buy it.....love it at first....then hesitate...sell...buy others....remorse sets in....start missing the sold watch.....and then buy it again because you realise that it actually was "the" watch. Biggest one number 5 for me! Getting better, but am always fearful about wearing and scratching my best watch! I work in construction so do not wear it everyday. But do fear wearing it out and about on the weekends and in busy places getting paranoid about it!

One of the msitake I've made is not try to discuss the price. Most AD have got a 10% easy negociation margin, best way is just to go to two of them and tell them : if you can beat your competitor, I'll buy it from you. And they will give you the best price they can do. I've got 20% of my hamilton just by asking.

Nice presentation full of good humor ! My wife bought me a Tissot PR 516 almost 50 years ago and I almost ruined it going swimming with it on vacation 2 years later...I left it alone for 40 years or so !..but then.....I brought it back to life by myself, found a brand new face on E-Bay, took it partially apart and back together on my own. Now it's my everyday watch and I love it ! I like your style !!!

I've got into appreciation of timepieces quite recently and fashion watches was my gateway. But one of the biggest mistake I made was buying $400-600 watches without consideration that I may get tired of the design pretty quickly. So now I have several swiss and german watches gathering dust, while I wear cheap quartz that I really like aesthetically. My lesson was learned and now I don't buy anything decent until acquiring a quartz homage of it and use it for a while.

Debt: this is a tricky topic, TGV. Given the level of household debt in the major consumer markets worldwide, if only people without any personal debt bought watches, the industry would be gone tomorrow! Of course, you are right. It is more satisfying buying personal goods when you are debt free. It's worth noting, however, that many people who consider themselves debt free are anything but. Especially when one factors mortgages and business debt into the equation. Come to think of it, I know of almost no wealthy people that aren't leveraged to the hilt. It seems the way wealth is grown in the modern world. What are your thoughts on this?

Inspiring set of advice. Thank you! Great video! I've had watches bought for me by my parents before and the last one was a simple Timex Indiglo with a nylon strap that I wore through high school and college; went everywhere with it rain or shine. I retired the Timex a few years ago (rusted out) and haven't worn anything new since, until now. I recently online-bought for myself a 52mm Casio Tough Solar watch. Meanwhile I have 45mm wrists. This was going to be the very first watch that I've ever bought for myself so I was very wary about the size issue. Before I bought it, I went to a store and checked out a sample of the model that I wanted. Being an idiot, I didn't ask to try it on. But I really liked what I saw so I went online and bought it (the store's stock was more expensive). Sure enough it's big on the wrist, but not as big as I thought. I just frickin' love it, man! I don't care about size appropriateness anymore. I care about how it makes me feel and that's important, right? Cheers!

Hi TGV, I thought you might be interested to know that I recently bought an Oris pocket watch from the charity shop I volunteer at, which had recently been donated. It is from the 60s I believe, in mint condition with a gorgeous sunburst dial and has been keeping better time than my Oris Artelier wristwatch! The best thing is it cost me £20. James.

This probably a combination of some of your points . But I read something a long time ago which stuck with me when I was buying watches. "The most expensive watch you will ever buy is the one you get INSTEAD of the one you really want." What I mean is that sometimes people can't afford the watch they want and will settle for an alternative . But that "grail" watch will eat away at them and eventually they will get it and the watch they bought will never get worn again. Better to just wait and save for the one you really want. Secondly I partially disagree with your "don't buy a watch to check boxes or complement a collection " i am actually at that stage where I have a pretty nice collection and now when I look to buy a watch I make sure it doesn't have any or very little overlap with any watch I currently own . Because if I buy another diver it needs to be different enough for me to want to wear it vs say my submariner or seiko or citizen divers etc. This has prevented me from wasting a ton of money buying watches too similar to ones I already own. Otherwise great video with good advice .

I always wanted a watch that could tell me the exact time. And I mean THE EXACT time. And so I was jealous of the high end watches because I thought that they were the most precise watches out there. But then I found out what the expected loss /gain of a watch is and I stopped being jealous. Then I started benchmarking my own watch ( some SWATCH, it was a present, I don't know the model but after a lot of research I believe it costs 170-230 €) and after the course of a month I figured that it had the expected accuracy of a certified quartz chronometer! After 9 years of my wearing it almost every day, It was losing between 0.014 and 0.015 seconds per day depending on conditions! Now, a year later, I am still proud of it.
