Before You Buy an FMF Exhaust - Check This Out!

A #test between a stock 2022 #yamaha #yz450f exhaust and a #FMF 4.1 slip on exhaust. Sound comparison on and off the track, and my breakdown of the differences I saw and felt after riding months with the stock exhaust. My initial thought after riding a couple sessions with the FMF 4.1 is at the end of the video. Half way through There’s a back to back comparison on each of the test so I did.

Far to many people think that slapping on an aftermarket exhaust will immediately increase performance, this is actually not the case. To achieve more power, adjusting the fuel delivery map is usually required, especially on street legal machines, due to the lean mixture needed to meet emission standards. Without a dyno, this is extremely difficult, as its next to impossible to know how the engine responds to the changes and can actually cause damage due to exhaust gas temperature increases.The ear and ass dyno is an extremely misleading.

For sure, for me it helped a little with smoothing out the power but not much. I got a vortex ecu changed it out, I did a little video on it. It made it feel like a completely different motor for the better , a little expensive but worth it. I could get no where close to this change with the Yamaha tuner app.

I have a 23 yz450 fx i was looking at the fmf slip on vs the full exhaust. How do you get it mapped right with the exhaust. If you have a street bike. Ive got an R1 and when you do exhaust youve got to have it remapped. On the power tuner app it doesnt have any maps for modified exhaust or any suggestion on where to adjust.

I would say it depends on what you’re trying to do to the motor character. I was trying to take out the bottom hit of instant power to help with arm pump in longer motos. Which helped a little. the slip on seemed to fit what I was trying to achieve and the full system with the headpipe seemed like it would take me to the more power direction which I didn’t want. Then I went through a ton of maps which you’re right I didn’t find any exhaust specific maps but ride 99% of the time in the controlled acceleration map I downloaded and like just by testing them out for months and have the insert in that seems to be the most linear power I can get. All in all I wish I would have just bought a Get or Vortex ECU and not got exhaust at all.

I have a 22 yz450f and looking at adding an exhaust myself. What you said is exactly what I was looking for. I was wanting more linear power and also wanting to be able to run 3rd gear a little better. Also glad you touched on the sprocket, because I was looking at going to a 50t but you said you may go back down to a 49t. I’m an older rider and looking to help be smoother in the corners to keep from wearing me out so bad. Thanks for the review!

If you want a bigger Bang for your buck night and day difference to smooth the power out. I recommend a vortex ECU from XPR or twisted development. I got the ECU after the FMF exhaust and wish I would have gone to the ECU first cause it feels like a completely different motor in the bike. I don't get nearly as tired. That thing you pulled out of the muffler did you leave that out? Sorry for the ignorance, but when I saw you pull it out and I didn’t see you reinstall it. I had to ask the question. Hope you don’t mind.

Not a stupid question, It's the spark arrestor. You can take it out by removing the sir clip or leave it in. Some states You have to leave it in to ride trails if you're a trail rider. I actually put it back in because the purpose of me buying this exhaust was to try to smooth out the power, having this in has helped a little bit. It depends on what bike and size you have though, for what it will do.

Good review - thanks. How would FMF sound & feel with spark arrester? Supposedly you will have less low end loss compared to not running it & will be quieter.

I did a comparison when I got to the track today and did a couple back to back laps with the spark arrestor in and out. From what I read also it keeps the stock bottom end feel with the spark arrestor in, but that was on a YZ250f on Keefer testing Inc. I was referencing when reading. When I put the spark arrestor in it actually seemed a little boggy lugging 3rd on the bottom end and then it seems to pull harder and longer in the mid to top RPMs which I was surprised with. A little bit more smoother power delivery when your running in the low to mid RPM range. The insert Gets rid of the deep throaty sound, it sounds more like the stock exhaust note. So from my experience insert In better mid to top RPM pull, Insert out is snappy on the bottom to the mid power and then starts to fall off towards the top sooner.

I would say hands down an aftermarket ECU. After getting my Vortex ECU that by far is the most bang for the buck, night and day difference mod I've ever bought for any 4 stroke, that's engine performance related. I have one map that makes it seem like a different motor got put in the bike, very managable, and keeps pulling to the moon with little to no engine braking. The slip-on is nice, and it helped smooth out the power delivery a little before i put the ecu on, but it's a mod you kind of feel but not world changing for the price. If you're looking for big changes like making it more manageable or waking up the motor in curtain RPM ranges a ECU will be my first purchase from here on out on any bike I get because they do make a massive difference the second you get on the bike you feel it. And thanks for watching till the end! I would buy the slip-on again it would just be way down the necessities list, though. More of for the bling, pretty to look at factor purchase.
