Three HR freeze dryers and three FD that had problems out of the box. Going to try Stay Fresh.

We’ve been scared away from buying one of these because people have told us if you aren’t techy and you aren’t a fix-it kind of a person you shouldn’t get one. Unless you have a lot of money which we don’t. Do you agree with this?

I’ve had mine for not even three years and over $4500 in it and it’s broken down now for the second time. And I still haven’t gotten my money back for a pump that they sold me that I didn’t need used one time sent back to them.

Indeed, these are terrible machines, a dishonest company, and the worst customer support.

Thankfully after a few years, when the medium freeze dryer pays for itself (and your urgency to stockpile slows down), you probably won't need the large freeze dryer. That's how I'm looking at it. Sure, it would be nice to have the large 5 tray Freeze Dryer (early on), but I'm just making the medium work. Using it a ton, in this first year. But year 2 will be less, and year 3 even more less. Until I get to a comfortable, less hectic frequency of usage.

We're in year five now and our freeze dryer hasn't been getting less use, it's been getting a Lot more. We have the medium size freeze dryer, and after weighing all the pros and cons, for us, if we had to do it over we would still get the same size. We make large batches of food and at any given time, we may have five to ten loads of food waiting to get freeze dried. (3 freezers). We buy most things when they go on sale and we are lucky to have a Chef Store and a Costco nearby.

@@hydej1667 Wow. Are you also homesteaders (i.e. have a farm or business)? Or are you just consumers that buy a lot of extra food? I live alone, so I believe year 2 or 3 will see a reduction in my quantity of items freeze dried. Also, I'm running out of space for storing all this freeze dried food...lol.

@@MGillDesign Not homesteaders, tooooo much work. Growing up, every time my dad got stationed overseas we all got shipped off to our grandparents farm in PA. No indoor plumbing, wood cook stove ( for cooking and heating). Besides having huge gardens Grandpa was a butcher. There were lots of animals to take care of and cows to milk. WAY too much work. I became an engineer instead, and retired from that about 3 years ago. We freeze dry for the family and for the future. And because it's soooo much fun ! 😃

It will only pay for itself if it actually works! My first machine failed almost right away. After I did a bunch of things and it still didn't work, months going by, HR after much arguing agreed to replace the machine. Replacement machine died after 8 batches. Complete waste of money and absolutely HORRIBLE customer service.

I can vouch for you, that i finally ran into issues with mine too. Got the mid-batch heater failure (about a year into using it). I didn't want to pay HR $45 to diagnose. And realized that HR uses a crappy relay switch for their heater (that can go bad quickly). So I tried to find their $100 relay board online, but they were all sold out (for months). So my next solution, i started researching other companies (competitors) that use solid state relays (StayFresh, Blue Alpine) that don't have this problem, and bought the latter. Just arrived yesterday, actually on 8/10/23. HR went into the trash (i actually tore it apart, piece by piece. @@flyingsticks7155

I have had mine for just over a year. My compressor stopped working. I sent an email with my issue and a week later I got a reply with a bill for $45 that said once I paid it they would have someone answer my question. Then told me that I was out of warranty and if I ship them my freeze dryer and pay shipping ($378) they will fix it and send me the bill.

oh wow. That is crazy. They started charging for tech support about a year ago, I have not needed it thankfully. I so wish, someone else would start making them. That would force them to be competitive and they would stop ripping people off like that. Sorry it happened to you.

have you had a problem with the bottom tray not drying and being ice cold
@flyingsticks7155

It's common for the bottom tray and then the top to be less warm and dry than the middle ones. I usually rotate them around before adding more time. That is, during the few times the machine has worked.

Richard is there something your not telling us? Someone seems to think that you might be par taking in the old electric lettuce. Lol. It could be that their having a fixation moment from their imbibing. That was a strange set of comments. Yup, I saw them. I had just come in for supper, and saw that you had posted a one year video on the Harvest Right, on my tablet. So I started to watch it, I saw there was a few comments, and thought I'd have a peek to see what was being commented. They weren't exactly on par to he subject matter, that's for sure. So if you were the one that nuked them, I don't blame you. But anyways.... The first Harvest Right my daughter started out with was a medium, but the subsequent units are all large. The DIY freeze drying business she and her husband and their partner started, although it's not gang busters yet, it's definitely gaining traction. Between the u-brew business that their partner has next door, and the freeze drying business, they're getting cross over business like they thought, but it's a little more than they anticipated. Which is good. But what's really been generating quite a bit of business is the farmers market on Saturday's. She and her hubby take a Harvest Right with all the accessories, mostly for display purposes, and samples, lots of samples. The farmers market definitely has been good for the DIY part of the business. Plus they've run into a number of people who own freeze dryers in the area. I know she would agree with you and your recommendation, if your going to buy a Harvest Right, buy the large. In the video you posted the other day, where you said that your going with your church group to help out with the havoc that Ian caused. I look forward to that video. I think we need to see more positivity these days. A video of people helping people, couldn't hurt, and maybe even be inspirational. Lol. So you've unsubscribed to Canadian Prepper. Ok, I haven't gone that far yet, I've just stopped watching his videos. I just find you get too much of a mix of, "Here's what's going on today, and oh by the way we're have a sale on something, because I have a warehouse full of it." That and the, " My people on the inside are telling me.... " Well the leaves have all changed colour, and a lot of them have already fallen, and were not too far off from having brought in our firewood for this year. Actually it's next year's firewood, I've always strived to be at least a year ahead when it comes to that. You can never have too much firewood. Ask the people in Europe. I just seen today Germany is curtailing or ceasing sales of energy to neighbouring countries. Then there's the whole opec thing, that caught Brandon with his pants down around his ankles, a lot like a certain family member of his. Apparently the Saudis leader has a real disdain for Brandon. I'm pretty sure Brandon isn't on the Christmas card list of a few of the other member nations. As for me, I'm looking forward to a number of shop projects this winter. One a of them is to spend some time playing around with the wood gasifier that was built last winter. I have a few ideas about fueling it with different types of wood, more precisely consistencies of wood, ie, chips, pellets, chunks and pieces, and build a hopper with automatic feed. Right now when I fill the reactor I get about three and a half to four hours on a burn. With a hopper and an automatic feed who knows. Anyways Richard glad to know thing went well during the hurricane, and that you a your church group are making an effort to help those who were less fortunate. Cheers. 👋🇨🇦

Hey Andy, I believe in free speech, but, sometimes, yes I nuke the comments and the account. No time for nonsense. Yes we did fine here, our church as 1000 volunteers lined up from around the south east that will descend on the Port Charlotte area this weekend. They have asked us locals to stick with outlying areas for now so that is what we are doing. Its close enough we wont be spending any overnighter, we will just come home at the end of the day. The main tasks are cutting up trees and pling them up and mocking out flooded homes. That requires cutting out drywall, insulation talking up carpets and removing any personal belongings that got wet. Then applying a bleach solution to the floors and frames to stop the mold growth. I hope to get some video, we shall see just how much I can get. Productivity is my first priority.
