From the echo chambers of social media to our growing culture of political correctness, our world is constantly conditioning our minds to think and respond a certain way that’s detached from rationality. Today, we break free from the chains of conditioned thinking, sharpen our mental awareness, and learn how to utilize our emotions as a strength, rather than a weakness. On this episode of Conversations with Tom, Tom Bilyeu is joined by New York Times and international bestselling author Robert Greene to discuss such matters and more as they explore why today, more than ever, we need to be sharply aware of the political and cultural environments that seek to condition our minds and force us to think irrationally. They discuss why so many behave irrationally today, the power of analyzing your emotions, how today’s environment has conditioned our minds, how we can utilize awareness to empower us, how to use anger as a motivator, the dangers of today’s culture, the constant need for change, the difference between yesterday’s and today’s generations, the story of Athena, why life must have both pain and pleasure, and much more.
Order Robert’s latest book, ‘The Laws of Human Nature‘: amzn.to/3e2AiIJ

People often don't realize the kind of impact that even their repressed emotions can have on their lives. Emotional management includes making peace with your past trauma so that you don't continuously get triggered by similar events in the future. Confronting your emotions is how you heal; letting time "heal" you is how emotions get repressed just so they can bubble up at a future date.

People should read Robert Greene's "The 33 Strategies of War". It's an excellent book to navigate through life with full momentum and your focus constantly outward and forward. No matter what happens, just keep going and don't allow anything or anyone hold you back, most importantly yourself (we are often our worst enemies).

@@BRAZEN_Muse I'm libertarian, more in favor of smaller government, less wars and big advocate of the first two Ammendments. I do agree it's silly to view power as this evil thing, rather it's a tool to be used and can be used to do good or evil by those who wield it similarly to how firearms can be used to save lives or destroy innocent lives. What it comes down to at the end of the day is accountability and virtue. A good person can use their power to uplift people's lives in very positive ways while a person lacking accountability and virtue can greatly harm people. When it comes to government, of both political affiliations more often than not there is a lack of accountability and virtue because many of these officials are isolated from the effects of their decisions while in office. The conservative warhawks don't see the soldiers dying on the front lines and the progressives don't see how their gun control policies make urban low income people vulnerable to opportunists who then have little resistance to robbing, r@ping, and bullying these people. Anyways, thought your comment was interesting just wanted to add my two cents.

Apologist's advocate: Ironically, we have social media to thank for that. Nevertheless, while we may all often be connected, primarily influenced only by those up to three degrees away, hopefully this information overload gradually dissipates and ceases to have a noticeable effect on its intended targets, advertising targets, such as by those subliminal messages, and as in Pavlovian conditioning.

Robert Greene, my favorite author is just brilliant in every way and his books have helped me out a lot to deal with the world and people. What I like about this episode is that he mentions the importance of analyzing your own emotions when you feel anger, sadness, fear etc. This happens to me a lot and every other day this week I've been completely calm, peaceful, and in harmony to feeling anxious, afraid, and worried the next day, to feeling calm again the next day. As soon as I get these negative emotions, I try to figure out what exactly caused it and how I can properly deal with it. It can often be a combination of things that I need to sort out. Being in a fearful state of mind is never good and we suffer more in our own imagination than in reality. It's easier said than done though but you have to learn how to Master yourself and control your emotions, especially with everything going on in the world right now. Remember, one of the most important things you can do is to focus 100% on yourself while simultaneously take the focus away from yourself by keeping it outwards instead of inwards. That will help you focus as you constantly are moving forward. Always keep the initiative and always build and keep momentum. If you don't succeed with something, go straight over to something else. It's all about the process, not the goal itself.

He's speaking of being empowered, which is power over oneself as opposed to seeking to have power over other people, which is a red flag towards being exploitative & treating other people with a lack of empathy. Have you read the book 48 Laws of Power? It reads like a psychopath wrote it, which is confusing to me in comparison to what he says here. In this interview, he says that he gets angry at people who behave in ways that demonstrated them as fake basically, (being something they're not), but it's pretty much what he says to do in his book. Hide your plans, use people, etc. Check it out, it's on Amazon.

My parents disowned me a month after I turned 18. But I realized even then that it was a gift - because I really had to go through EVERY SINGLE BELIEF I had ever been taught and decide whether to keep it or let it go. It was a good way to start adulthood (in some ways).

@tmstani23
@tmstani23 3 жыл бұрын
@8Truth Seeking I'm not sure if there is a universal. Maybe some perceive an emotion first. It seems from your last comment that you think thoughts can be unconscious. In that case I would probably call them more complicated emotions. To me thoughts must be conscious. I know some people don't even think very much consciously. I've read in neuroscience studies that emotions are detected before thoughts. Look into Jonathan Haidt's book Righteous Mind for a breakdown of thoughts emotions and morality.
@tmstani23
@tmstani23 3 жыл бұрын
@8Truth Seeking I will agree that emotions are often reactive and happen after an unconscious judgement. It may just be a difference in how we're defining thought. I think of thought as rational thought. Thinking something through in a rational way. Considering possible alternatives etc. Thus thought as defined here requires consciousness. Emotions may occur subconsciously then bubble into consciousness. We may not even be consciously aware of an emotion to repress it with thought. I agree that things are judged subconsciously before our conscious awareness and then once consciousness is aware, then perception, at that point I would say rational thought begins and emotions/intuition/judgement was the catalyst. So maybe it is unconscious intuition-understanding(what I think you're calling thought) > judgement > emotion > rational thought.
@tmstani23
@tmstani23 3 жыл бұрын
@8Truth Seeking Hmm, that is a good point. Ok we will say thought begins pre-consciously then. Perhaps it begins with what we call comprehension/ then judgement/intuition then conscious thought. Could it be that conscious emotional experience is an offshoot of the thought process? what is the difference?

Did you watch the interview? He openly admits to having the same faults himself so I don't know what you're talking about. He clearly states he is not perfect at all, none of us are, and he is mad about people who project like they are. That's why I personally accept all my flaws and am not afraid to show them to people in any sense. I choose to live truthfully, not a lie like most people and am way happier in that sense. I can expose a lot of people but nobody can expose me at all, and that is a great and powerful feeling and position to be in. People are deluding themselves if they think they can get through life by just being nice and polite. The world does not work that away, you are in competition with everyone and the world is out to get you. The sooner you realize that and grow some teeth, the better off you will be. I wonder if Mr. Greene realizes the contradiction between the need to have power/control over one's own environment and the idea(illusion) of a free society. Unless you wish to be a complete hermit and not associate with anyone at all, your desire for control over your own life is going to affect those around you one way or another, and will eventually, to whatever degree(whether positively or negatively), detract from the freedom of those whom one is surrounded by in their day to day life. This is the real problem a society seeking absolute and true freedom faces once all of the fake, manipulative control freaks are out of the picture. The only kind of power one should really desire, is the power to be content, even if that means isolating one's self from those that negatively affect that contentment and freedom. In other words, the only way to truly be free is to be surrounded by those that you share all of the same values and beliefs with. Otherwise, that conflict of interest will always lead to the manifestation of conflict in relationships. In a society free of conflict, freedom will always be limited. Compromise does not seem to work, because with compromise comes a loss of personal freedom. We need to let go of our egos and free ourselves from the capitalistic model of society and culture we've become so accustomed to, the kind that leaves us desiring more and more power, control, and greed disguised as "freedom". At the same time, not falling prey to socialistic models that inevitably lead to dictatorship and a nearly absolute loss of personal freedoms. Absolute personal freedom in society is an absurd contradiction. What we need to focus the most on is proper education for everyone, minus the consumerist propaganda that plagues us, so that we have a society that consists of individuals that share the same reasonable and realistic rationale.

A guy I was seeing for 5 months tells me he wants us to be friends. I first cried in front of him but in that moment I analyzed my emotions and realized I crying because I felt like I was being rejected not sadness from being cut off from someone I was developing feelings for. As a result, I ended up cracking jokes in the moment. And days later, the feeling of rejection disappeared. Now we are actually good as friends

I've watched this 4 times and kept coming back to certain spots. I tried to show this to my boyfriend, he made a disparaging comment and now he's not my boyfriend.

This episode has explained me why I often throw myself on situations the hurt me and I could not understand why I had this self destruct button and now I know! This episode has probably changed the trajectory of my life! I still feel the pain of all my bad reactions in the past but I hope that this new found awareness will save me in the future for falling to my idiot side of am brain that pushes me to run from situations that trigger my fears. Wish I had listen to this before my last screw up!!☹️ but thank you for sharing this amazing episode with Robert Greene. Please broadcast this in schools! It will save many people from much misery!

@Juria Flower The Myers Briggs test is not an accurate indicator of who you currently are because people have been known to get different results based on their moods. The big five test is a better indicator with far more evidence behind it.

Probably more an ENFP...he did write the Art of seduction and likes power and attention or he wouldnt even do an interview so he is extraverted. He is more Perception than Judging because of his fluidity of thing seeing the big picture and how everything is connected to each other. In the Big Five he is definitly open/creative, not agreable at all hehe, very orderly, not neurotic, and extraverted.
