Let us know what your thoughts are on Red Rising! Do you have any questions for us?
@andrewroy9528

Thanks for your thoughts! I'm still very interested in hearing your thoughts on the strategic depth of the game. As you said, it definitely feels like a light game, and I'm curious if it at times feels a little cold and calculating, as it becomes clear roughly how much each card and play will be worth and you end up making fairly clear decisions to optimize points. The balance of keeping a card for scoring vs playing for the deploy ability is interesting, but beyond that I'm concerned about the depth and intrigue of decision making and curious to hear your thoughts on that. On a related note, the player scaling is also interesting because while it does make sense that higher numbers lead to more card cycling, I also feel like it becomes a more tactical and less strategic game, as the board state changes a lot more between turns and it can be hard to plan for the future. Final question (sorry!) for you is about accessibility. Basically, I'm wondering who the target audience really is. For someone who wants a deeper or heavier game, this doesn't really seem like it. However, for someone newer to gaming or for groups or families who want something lighter, I also don't know that this fits because it feels like a lot of overhead and a very slow pace as everyone reads all the cards and tries to see how they interact. I don't love when games feel like they are very light and don't have a ton of meat but are still hard for new players to grasp and have a ton of rules/ explanation overhead, makes them much harder to teach non gamers. Who do you think this game is ideal for? A gamer looking for a filler plus style game, I suppose? Thanks very much, always enjoy your content!

I'm interested in the game for sure, but I'm worried the price for the deluxe is going to be too much and I am one of those weird people's who really wants deluxe everything. With that being said I find myself really enjoying games that are not amazing but just good games and it sounds like this could be one of those.

I'm so happy to see you guys gain as much traction as you have for having only started a year ago or so. I just discovered this channel a few months ago and you're already one of my favorite channels for reviews. You guys have figured out the mixture of things that I think makes a perfect board game review channel: 1. You guys are both super likable and the kind of people my wife and I would enjoy playing games with if we knew you in real life. 2. You don't come across as though your opinion is gospel or more important than anyone else's. 3. You don't have any unnecessary fluff in your videos, like random skits or jokes. Everything is well organized and I know exactly where to go to get the information I want. 4. You ultimately treat board games as a means to have fun, and not as though they're all dissertations to be judged or social statements. I look forward to seeing you guys grow further - keep up the fantastic work!

Thanks for the good review - subscribed. Regarding the house tiles, Jupiter goes up exponentially 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21, 28 then starts going down 34, 39, 43. Whereas Helium is worth 3 for every one: 3, 6, 9 etc. So you would need to progress 5 times on Jupiter's fleet track before you start to make more points than Mars. I think that is actually quite well balanced. You made it sound like you were scoring Jupiter every time you progressed, where in fact you just score once at the end of the game depending how far you have moved up the track. I can see a place for both FR and RR in a collection. Take care.

Great review! I feel like this is the kind of game that you're going to really enjoy if you know what you're getting yourself into. I like what Naveen said about it being a super filler. That's the feel I get from this, nothing I'm going to take seriously, but still have fun while playing it. I think that is something that isn't spoken about so much in games is the fun factor. I'm a HUGE Lacerda fan like you two, but I wouldn't say that playing his games is fun, I'd say it's incredibly enjoyable, but fun is not the right word for it. This looks fun and not too long that it would overstay its welcome. Do you feel that you could play this just as easily without the house factions/player bonuses? Would it change the game much?

Very intrigued by the pros/cons of player count. Some of the people in the Tantrum House review mentioned when playing at too high a player count, the board state changes too much between your turn and it eliminates any strategy/planning and introduces some analysis paralysis when it does get to your turn. As you guys mentioned, maybe 3 is the sweet spot? We'll be playing at 2 mainly, and your playthrough did seem really fun at 2 anyway. Definitely would seem to make replayability good since the cards don't cycle as much as at higher player count so each game will feel totally different. Loved your review, really thorough and fair!

We want to see if there are any good errata/ house rules for a more robust card selection at 2 players. 3 was a solid game and want to test it at 4. Don't think I would want to player 5-6 players as it would add more time than the 30 minutes I want this game to run.

Thanks for sharing! I saw another review where they mentioned that in one game a player ended the game with only 4 cards as other players were banishing their cards a lot and they couldn't find a way to easily recover cards or increase their hand size. Did you experience anything like that in any of your games or does that sound anomalous? Bearing in mind this is a short game, how would you say it ranks on the 'meanness' scale? Scythe and Tapestry have a certain amount of tripping each other up but I wouldn't say that Jamey's games have been hitherto mean-spirited: would you say this has a similar level of interaction to his previous titles?
@BeforeYouPlay
@BeforeYouPlay 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Nigel, I wouldn't classify this as a mean game. We haven't run into the situation you described. Sounds like the group was taking out some sort of anger/aggression for that 1 player lol. Direct interaction is less, it's more about hate drafting at times and blocking cards you think/know another player would want.

@@BeforeYouPlay True. Also the the one that activates your house power (if you are red ofcours). The good thing is looks like it is possible while still scoring well. The gameboy geek on his vid showed the score card and he has 36 from them (12 helium) while he scored like 303 total. I also think that while those are important the main thing it's the cards, so getting the most beneficial card for you should be priority #1. Although you can manipulate things better in a 2p game, in a higher player count I suspect that if you need it you better grab it now (and never let it go) no matter the bonus you get from a location. Of course all of this is speculation because I haven't played. After I do I will come back and let you know. I might realize I was completely wrong, who knows. Thank you!

For the books characters sometimes I'm like " why they look like that " but oh man, when I saw Cassius I'm like " oh yeah. . . that's him. . . that's him *nodding in approval* " edit: -" stuck with what you have " could also be " work with the cards you're dealt with " and that is very much what The Institution is about, you get allocated and alright. . .figure it out, and I mean, I think there's a fair amount of that in the books, making what you can out of the situation -The Sovereign within the books does hold a good amount of power so it makes sense that the token is weighed with a fair amount of points -the no " direct interaction " also kinda makes sense from the books, like, there's stuff that happens where it's very much a consequence of actions taken rather than heavy handed, it's a display of soft power

Thanks for this review! While I’m enjoying the books (in book 2 now), I might actually pass on this one, unless the standard edition is truly cheap- and then I would want to make a smaller box to store it. The art style seems like it matches the weight of the game more than the weight of the books, so that’s giving me some dissonance in the art direction. I think Jamey’s “drip feed” of information poses the risk of setting up the wrong expectations, then letting people down- like your example of expecting a battle arena. Come to think of it, the “action” is what hooks me in the books- so I am a bit let down that this isn’t more combative. That said, Stonemaier seems to avoid highly combative games (did he try any? I haven’t read his design diaries.) Thank you for the heads up about cubes being close in color! That helps my edition decision.

Yes the box is much bigger than need be (forgot to mention it in the review). You are absolutely right! The art style does match the looseness of the game rather than the seriousness of the books. The only game that comes to mind is Scythe which has combat, but the game isn't a pure combat game. Scythe still remains both of our favorite SM game.

The box is probably a bit too big, but not by much. They wanted to leave enough room for players who like to sleeve their cards, and for potential expansions as well.

Thought I'd follow up on my comment to share that I ended up pre-ordering the deluxe edition, haha. The 25% Stonemaier Champion preorder discount made it more attractive. Regarding the cubes being close in color- I anticipate playing this mostly 2 (and someday 3, max 4-player), so it should be easy to leave out the too-matchy colors.

I think that the accessibility of the game has to do with the agent/author of the books - maybe they had to sign off on the game as is, and Jamey Stegmeier said on his original attempts to play he brought the prototypes to the author, and mentioned he wasn't a boardgamer so much. But that's just an assumption. The card market at two players is a problem with card driven games; of the top of my head from the ones in my collection: Fort, It's a Wonderful World, Race for the Galaxy. It's a different game at two for sure. For those games I've been testing out house rules to get more cards in play. I think for me its strength will be how fast in plays versus the gameplay it offers. I liked what I saw in your gameplay, so I'm getting it to try for sure.
@andrewroy9528
@andrewroy9528 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on the card market in Red Rising and Fort being very different at 2, but how is it at all different in Race? You can see the exact same number of cards when you trade, explore, etc, and there isn't a market you're buying from like in those other games, you're taking from the deck and that process is entirely unaffected by number of players.
@shinjial
@shinjial 3 жыл бұрын
@@andrewroy9528 it's slightly distinct, yes, you're right. But on Race for the Galaxy the deck itself is huge right, so at two there's only so much you can get to see before the game end triggers. What that means is that cards that would benefit your strategy might be buried at the bottom of the deck and you won't get to see them at any given game. I've never done a full round of the deck at two; the flipside with more would be more people searching the deck so it would cycle more. What I experienced in this line were these: going for a military strategy and not getting cards to be conquered; getting cards that need "products" to activate but not getting enough windfall planets or planets able to produce a particular color of "product" to activate the abilities played before.
@andrewroy9528
@andrewroy9528 3 жыл бұрын
@@shinjial well sure but even at higher player count games you're still going to see the same proportion of cards in the deck - you can be going for military and still see very few military cards because your opponents happen to draw them. You're seeing about the same number of cards, so you have the same opportunity to draw specific cards, so the card pool for you isn't really changed at different player counts. In the other games you have more options for cards to buy because you have more opponents.
@shinjial
@shinjial 3 жыл бұрын
@@andrewroy9528 I still feel the card pool is different at two than it is at four. If the deck has 100 cards but it takes two players 60 to cycle and end the game, then the pool isn’t 100 cards, it’s 60. But if at four you cycle 120 cards you have a chance to see all the deck (between the players) and a bit more from the discarded pile. Also, if players got the cards you needed is a different effect of never even had access to them; the first is a result of players choices and interaction; the second is a limitation based on the number of players and disregards their choices during the game. So it’s similar to Fort and Red Rising in the sense that there’s only so many cards you’ll see and players will have to make the most of what’s already there - moving things around in this game, maybe getting a card from the other yard in Fort.

SM games and poor balance, name a more iconic duo.
@d13robot
@d13robot 3 жыл бұрын
seems like it's really just tapestry, which they released an update for. scythe is pretty well balanced except for blue. All the rest are balanced. Euphoria, between two castles, charterstone, and wingspan all don't have asymmetric abilities. Pendulum does but I haven't really noticed any poor balance there. Seems like you just want to hate on SM games considering more then half don't have asymmetric abilities
@AJ-pn9dm
@AJ-pn9dm 3 жыл бұрын
@@d13robot Ah, yes, the "you must be a hater" ad hominem. Maybe that plus SM discussions is the more iconic duo I was looking for. Scythe is so poorly balanced, certain faction combos are recommended to be banned. The top players in Scythe will give up basically anything in the opening bidding to take those combos. Charterstone has asymmetric starts -- one of the four factions (blue I believe) won 40+% of 4-player games in the fan-made dataset. And you don't need asymmetric abilities for the game to be poorly balanced -- for example, Wingspan has certain birds that are an automatic win if drawn early in the game (Ravens). Viticulture's balance is so bad that you have to actively avoid the thematic purpose of the game to have a chance at winning and then it becomes a game of who can top-deck the best visitor cards. So, yeah.
@d13robot
@d13robot 3 жыл бұрын
Raven does not equal a win in wingspan. I've only seen it win once and the odds of getting one of the two is really high. viticulture and charterstone are not imbalanced. Blue came in 4th when we played. Scythe, yes certain board/factions can be strong but don't bid then, deal randomly. You know like the rules state. Viticulture is random too and I've seen different combinations win. The games go through tons of play testing before being released. You should watch the overpowered video let's play did a little while back.

I just received my copy the other day and have played it twice with only two players. I would certainly say that the cards became kind of stagnant and very little changed. The weird part was, the bottom cards are kind of hard to get to. I wish there were more options during the turn to expose more cards. Just felt very limited. Will be trying it with 4 players in about a week so we shall see.
