"Your journey is infinite...what you want is not behind, it is not who you used to be, or what you used to do. It's your very next step." We all have made mistakes in life. Whether it be in relationships, in life decisions, or just simple miscalculations, these mistakes can very easily become an excuse to give up. I admire the stories of ex-convicts who have turned their lives in a new direction. These stories have common themes. The men and women who are successful in prison use their time wisely. One particular man began studying for the legal profession, and now that he is out of prison, works to help former prisoners rehabilitate themselves. Other convicts have found a passion in prison that they have turned into a career once re-entering society. Too often we approach our mistakes with a loss of hope for the future. I am reminded of the story from the Bible of Judas. No one had ever seen anything like Jesus. He healed the sick, gave his followers hope, and changed the world. Judas was an one of the apostles. Jesus recognized his potential, and made him one of the inner circle. Still, in spite of all his ability and talent, in spite of his bright future, and in spite of the love that Jesus had for him, Judas made the worst decision of his life. He betrayed Jesus into the hands of the religious leaders who hated him. Realizing his mistake, Judas was overcome with grief, and took his own life. The messages of the world were ringing loudly in Judas' ears that tragic afternoon. "You are a failure. You are beyond hope," he told himself. His mind was clouded with darkness, and he could not see beyond his mistake. "It is true," he finally concluded. Filled with despair, he made the trek to a lonely tree outside Jerusalem, fixed a rope into a noose, and hung himself. For all the many hours he had spent with Jesus, the message of hope had not penetrated his heart. While most have us have never contemplated suicide, we have all at some point felt like Judas. Whether or not we are an ex-convict, we all need to come to grips with our mistakes. We need to ask forgiveness. Then we need to move forward. The ex-convict in his cell studying his legal textbook has a lesson for all of us. Do not give up.
