You're welcome Brett, be safe and learn those safety rules. Learned the Chuck Key in Chuck with hand no on it rule quickly. That is when it's in the chuck you NEVER take your hand off it until you set it on the bench. It got my 69 GTO Windshield when it flew over my arm when I started the lathe. Thought I'd learned it, nope 2nd time was a charm when it hit me square in the middle of my chest. I've had my lathe for about 20 years now and have never repeated that mistake. I was stumped too, till I noticed the numbers to indicate order. What I do is spin the cork screw that pulls the dogs in to where the thread begins. I tighten the cork screw (forgive me for not knowing proper term.) Till #1 grabs, then spin chuck so #2 is at 10 o'clock position so gravity won't pull it and tighten till #3. Eliminates the rubber band and trying to hold it together. Thank you for a great vid.

The rubber band isn't really needed, I just find it easier for me. The way you're doing it is one of the ways it's done. Every machinist has their tricks and way they like to do it. As long as you get them in the right order and it works for you, it's the best way, LOL. There's a lot of good advice in the comments too. Glad it helped you because that's why I made the video, I too was stumped the first time. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

Neat trick, but the elastic band isn't necessary. With the jaws removed, turn the chuck so that you're looking into the slot for jaw #1. With the chuck key, slowly tighten the chuck - thus turning the scroll plate counterclockwise. Watch for the very first thread of the scroll to be visible in slot #1 then back it off until it is clear of the slot. Insert your jaw #1 and turn the scroll plate so that it engages this jaw. Check by trying to pull it out. It should be captured by the scroll plate now. Turn the chuck to the the next jaw position (or just look from the front of the chuck) and repeat the process for jaws #2 and #3. As long as you don't back it off past the previous jaw, you'll never have problems getting your jaws in the right place.

"You are absolutely correct", as Daffy Duck used to say on Saturday Looney Tunes. It is one way to do it, I just find it easier to put them in rubber band them up and back the key off until #1 drops and then do them all at once. Thanks for the tip and comment. Ps I went and checked out your Channel Awesome scenery videos. It looks like you have the little brother to the same lathe as I have. I would love to see some more videos of you using it. Especially the CNC conversion information. I have the necessary items to start converting mine, but have been way to busy to do it. I do need the pulleys and belts, but I do have the Computer, Mach 3 Software, Stepper Motors, Motor Controllers and the Controller board itself and some 1/2" x 3" x 9" aluminum plates. Thanks for watching again. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith

Hey John you're welcome. I'm still just an amateur but If you have any questions by all means feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer it or point you in the right direction. If you haven't got one yet, get a book on how to run an engine lathe. They are extremely helpful in learning the parts of a lathe which is invaluable when watching lathe videos so you know what they are talking about. Some good channels I go to are: "Smithy Industries", "Toms Techniques", "Joe Pieczynski", "Steve Jordan", "mrpete222". And if you like old steam engines and turn of the century stuff, go watch theses guys. "David Richards", Keith Rucker - VintageMachinery.org", and for small engine mod build projects go see this guy, "805ROADKING", watch his HOMEMADE 4 CYLINDER BRIGGS PROJECT. Well hope that helps point you in the right direction. Thanks for watching. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith Noneya

So what was the "easy way" to tell which jaws are 1, 2 or 3 if they are not numbered?
@keithnoneya
@keithnoneya 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Naked Lunch, I just realized I didn't do a good job of telling you the easy way to find out which one was number 1 and so on. I was actually referring to using the rubber band as being the easy way install them to help you find number one, because the band holds them in place while you try and figure it out. So to figure it out put all three together touching each other side by side, and with all the triangle points pointing towards you, also the part of the jaw that hods the metal to be turned, place those surfaces down towards the bench top. You'll notice some horizontal arcs going from side to side on all three. if you look closely, you'll notice the arcs closest to the triangle points are all at different distances from the tip of the jaws. Number one should be the one with the arc closest to the tip, No. 2 the next furthest away and the 3rd the next one after that furthest away. I hope that helps explain it better. The other way to do it is to install them all and tighten them until they meet in the middle. If they all meet at the same time then just number them so they always go back into the same spot. If they all don't meet in the middle at the same time, you'll have to move them around until they all meet in the middle at the same time, then number them. It may take a little time to get them all in one spot, but you'll figure it out. Hope that helps. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

@@fate2022 That should do it. If you notice in my video no. 1 drops then no. 3 then no. 2. I should have numbered them different, but as long as you put them in the same spot every time it doesn't matter. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya
