The tip about REI is sooooooo important. Not only can they measure your back/torso length, they can pull out all the packs they have that fit your torso.. ... then, they have weights to put inside your pack so you can FEEL how the pack rides on your back when loaded up.!!! GAME CHANGER. The pack I thought I wanted was NOT the pack that worked for me once they added weight. And now I have a backpacking pack that is even more comfortable than my day pack as it sits squarely on my hips with fantastic weight distribution. So happy I went to REI for my fit and purchase. I got lightweight and perfect fit.

100% agree!! REI is awesome and super helpful, especially when you're shopping for a new pack, whether it's your first or next pack.

Some really great information. We have been hiking for about the same amount of time. I got into backpacking through Scouts in 2012. Great info on choosing footwear, backpack sizing, and tent sizing. Learned these lessons much like you did. Waking up cold in a large tent took me a minute to figure out. LOL Practice practice practice. Also, gear testing prior to any trip is important. Never know when a mouse will find a tent in storage, or finding the stove or water filter has an issue. Bring backups or have a backup plan.

Thanks for sharing and I would add lack of first aid training as another backpacking mistake. Getting hurt or injury is expected in the outdoors (oneself and others). A wilderness first aid course can be helpful. I enjoy your content and keep it up!👍

Yes absolutely! Getting some sort of first aid training is a good idea for ALL backpackers, no matter what their experience level is. I decided to limit myself to featuring 10 mistakes I made in this video. Otherwise it would have been a looooonng video. Maybe there can be a Part 2 if there's enough interest because I know I've made a whole lot more than 10 mistakes when I first started backpacking.

Such a great video with detailed tips on each "mistake." Thanks for mentioning The 10 Essentials and the need for building solid skills in navigation with apps, GPS, and map and compass, having these skills reduces fear and hesitation, making a backpacking trip more fun and very safe!

I'm a HUGE fan of the 10 Essentials and having navigation skills, both of which can help eliminate fears and keep you safe while you're out on trail.

Yeah, I need a better fitting larger pack. I've taken to backpacking more than i imagined since i bot my backpack. I am teensie, so I went lightweight from the get go, but still I need larger than a Flash 45, which doesn't adjust down to a good fit on me anyway. My current backpacking tent weighs 2.5 lbs! Im just dialing it in eyeballing the Appalachian Trail. Ive got a long list including getting fitted for shoes. My feet are fine! -until i strap on 25 lbs and start walking around all day.

The whole backpacking journey is a process. It's very rare that someone is able to get the right gear from them when they first start because it's impossible to know what you're going to like, what you'll need, how often you'll get out on trail and the types of trips you'll be going on. Even now, I'm still adjusting and tweaking my gear after every trip I go on.

Solid tips. Getting familiar with how to use your all of your gear before you go on a longer trip is so important. Filter practice if you are new to using your filter, and filter testing before trips is so important. I had to bail on one trip because I didn't test. And when I was new to using a squeeze filter and collection bag, I messed up folding the seal on the collection bag, but I was on a day hike, so way less stress and anxiety while I was trying to figure it out.

I just discovered your channel and I'M OBSESSED😍😍 I am new into my solo overnight backpacking and so excited! Your information is so helpful! Thanks so much!!!!! I would love to know any recommendations you have for equipment more on the more affordable side of things? Since I'm starting out, I am just starting to invest in good quality things so priority is a sleeping pad this year, but dont have the means to go all out on everything else. What are your recommendations? Thanks again! So happy to have come across your channel❤️⛺️🏕

Great information in this video!! Thank you for sharing all your knowledge … it’s truly appreciated! (Silly random question … I love your lipstick color. What is the color and brand? It’s so pretty.)

Thanks Peggy! Glad you enjoyed the video. To answer your question, I'm actually not wearing lipstick at all. I'm a big fan of either a clear lipgloss like the one from MAC Cosmetics or just plain ol' NIVEA Moisture Lip Care. I have a tube of NIVEA Moisture Lip Care in my car, every room of my house and in the pockets of each of my packs. Sorry that I didn't have a more interesting answer for you. ;)

It's not as simple as saying 1P or 2P tent since the sizes can vary greatly from companies and models. Some 1P tents only work if you're on a short 20" pad, not a 25" long. People need to take their size and needs into consideration. An extra lb isn't going to freak out a lot of backpackers who are in reasonable shape and not ultra lighters. A good sleep system can negate that cold, especially if you're not sleeping in 10 degree weather. As a 6'1", 180 lb guy, I have zero issues with a 2P tent and never have. Personally I think people's biggest mistakes are basing their needs, capability, etc. on the wants/needs of KZfaqrs. For example, jump over to the next channel and see the 20 year hiker carrying a chair.
