Isn't it just amazing that this funny little tutorial has been seen 2,554705 times? I love it. I have watched it a couple times. The first time I felt frustrated with the interactions ( probably mother daughter stuff of my own), but on second viewing I am really taken by the respectful way in which mother and daughter communicate in an effort to help people like me learn how to quilt. Thank you Jenny and Hilary! Happy New Year and congrats on a very successful and enduring post.

It isn't an easy thing to do by putting oneself out there,I have to agree with Tanya on the negative comments about hair and Mom talking. This isn't a video for that anyway.I have to say I really appreciate Jenny for even putting these video's out here. They gave me courage to try new things and she answers my questions and helps me a lot.My daughter lives to far away and my Mother passed 13 years ago so I have no one to help but Jenny.Thank Jenny and your daughter was just fine.

L carter I agree re: Jenny doing these videos! Like you, I focus on the technique they are showing. I used to only make quilts if the pattern was the size I needed and did not have the courage to make changes to meet my needs. Thanks to Jenny's videos, I have gained knowledge and courage to try new techniques, make adjustments to patterns and have even used information to teach demos at my quilt group. And if you really paid attention to "all the interruptions by Mom" they were additional helpful information for the viewer. For Gena Caruthers I "polish" my sewing surface with furniture polish to help it glide and place books around my machine to give me a large, level area for my quilt to rest on while I machine quilt. Hope this helps you.

Hillary has a real talent with instruction. She is clear and easy to follow. I love that it's not "polished". Like her Mom, they seem so real that anyone can do it! Instead of getting caught up with perfection (which keeps you from going forward), they seem relaxed and fun. This encourages me to take a risk and go forward with learning a new skill.

Wow, this is the first tutorial I have watched that actually told you how to set up your machine. They usually just start showing you the quilting part. I have never tried this but I intend to after watching this. Those that keep complaining about the bangs evidently wasn't interested in the quilting. Jenny is a great teacher and her daughter has lots of years to learn. The best thing is to find positive things instead of negative. Jenny you and Hillary did an awesome job. Love your tutorials.

Thank you! I just ditched my dinosaur sewing machine (1978 Kenmore with no quilting foot, that I hadn’t used since 2004) and got an Accomplish. I’m super excited to start my first free motion quilting project tomorrow. Yippee for quilting spray. This is my 10th quilt since June 2020 everything else was straight line stitched because of dinosaur technology, which looks nice too but I am ready for adventure. Thanks so much, I enjoy so many of your videos since I started watching last year. Cheers🥂

Please try and ignore the neggies (my abbreviation for negative type people) Your daughter is darling, wish I could be as close to my daughter. The neggies can go to another tutorial offered by someone else that don't have bangs, but I will venture to say that they won't get the awesome instruction and techniques they will find with Missouri Quilt Co. Thank you Jenny and Hillary! I've sewn crafts and such, off and on for 40 plus years, and other than making mini quilt patches for my jeans in the 60's (ha) I've never quilted before. My 30 year old machine pooped out last week, and my new fangled machine is full of marvelous surprises that got me searching thru youtube. After watching several helpful Missouri Star videos I decided to attempt a crazy scrap baby changing mat (Thanks for idea Hillary) In one afternoon I made an adorable 'lil mini quilt, patched, quilted and hand bound. My 3 diaper wearing grandkids are visiting next month, perfect! (this actually has nothing to do w/ free motion but wanted to thank you!) I am ready to move up to a baby quilt!!!

If someone has tips or observations to add to any situation or conversation - it hurts no one who has the ability to take objective criticism in the light it should be taken...including that which comes across as sounding like a bit of moral superiority on other's observations/comments. There was nothing crass or outright rude in anyone's comment...I sensed no ill-will. Perhaps (from someone who may be used to being coddled or who likes to be told only good things) they may/can sound a little harsh, abrasive or blunt, but still... they were words, information...nothing more...nothing less. *You have to be able to set aside any emotion or projection of other's and learn from an observer to do this though* What I took away (aside from a great tutorial on machine quilting) was that in something that takes great preparation (quilting or making tutorial videos) if you can try to eliminate all sources of distractions *evidenced by hair and interruption comments* the more focused your viewers will be on what it is that you are trying to teach them. This can be a great learning moment for those who are actually able/willing to learn from not only supporters & fans, but their critics as well. You'll learn a lot less if you live only inside an echo chamber of what you want to hear vs what you may need to hear. It's all in perspective.

Everyone is so grumpy about Hillary's hair. I like the way it looks. I wear mine like that only my bangs go past my chin and cover half of my face lol. I think she did a great job show us how to machine quilt. I'm assuming Hillary is close to my age (24) and I'm always happy to see other people around my age doing stuff like this. I grew up watching my grandmother quilt and sew and even knit and crochet, and I always loved trying on my own. I'm actually pregnant with my second baby, I came across a baby quilt made by you guys in search of making my own for my baby girl, and I ended up sitting here all day watching all the things you made! Now I want to make pouches and quilts and all sorts of other stuff!

Therefore, allow me to repeat: IT'S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS. If you don't like the video, just keep your mouth shut (fingers off the keyboard) and move on. The rest of us aren't ignorant little hillbillies and don't want to be distracted by your vitriol on a QUILTING video.

I recently began quilting this summer. My 89 year old dad was diagnosed with cancer and I spent this summer as his caregiver so I was looking for something to keep me busy. I love this tutorial as well as all the others from Missouri Star and thank you for doing them. This is how I learned to quilt. I agree with the previous post. I do not respond to videos that I watch, but felt it necessary this time. People need to remember that it is a teaching video not a fashion show. The video did exactly what it was supposed to, taught us to free motion quilt.

I have been quilting since 1997 and have always wanted to learn free motion quilting. I discovered this tutorial TODAY and asked "Hillary - where have you been all my life?" I love the idea of spray basting as pins mean I have to stop so frequently to remove them. I will use spray on the baby quilt I am making now. So many helpful tips that I never knew before (like top tension ++ so the "dragon teeth" won't happen!) I usually do ""in the ditch" but now want to stipple. Thank you so much, Hillary, for teaching an old dog a few new tricks! (PS - Hillary, I like the mystery you wrote in the BLOCK Magazine - very good imagination!) 🤗

Thank you so much for making this video. I've just finished my first big quilting project (it's a 62" x 62" wall hanging for my bedroom) and was feeling quite overwhelmed about quilting it altogether. The basting spray alone will be such a time saver, but now I'm looking forward to practicing the stippling stitch so I can use it on my quilt. My quilt has a strong geometric pattern through it so I think the stippling will soften the look a bit and add a lot of character to the finished piece. Again, thank you!

I for one am quite grateful that there are people out there that are willing to share how to do these things. Read some of the comments about people being so negative on here and then found those negative comments. People that need to be UGLY like this do so because they have low self esteem. Plus probably jealous. I loved the video and loved the mother daughter interaction. Would give anything for my mother to still be alive and as proud of me as this mom was of her daughter. Thanks for the tutorial, and ignore the small minded people that feel the need to try to tear others down.

Love your videos. I have not been sewing quilts very long but when I accidentally ran across your videos I have learned so much. When I watch.a video I try to make at least one square or a lap quilt to remember how it was done. You have become my #1 source.

I can't believe with all the fabulous tutorials we get from MSQC FREE that anyone would comment on something like hair. This is beyond ridiculous! I really don't get it. Thanks Hilary and Jenny for another great tute!! :)

The hair really distracts from the tutorial. And don't worry about replying something like "this is a quilting tutorial" because I won't be coming back to this site to see it. Mom's chit chat is unnerving!

Get scissors and cut those damn bangs! It distracted me and she had to keep shaking her head to get the bangs out of her eyes. Plus they are down past her nose.

What a delightful & so beautiful pair you two are. :) I'm not new to sewing, but new to quilting. I've watched 100's of videos to learn how to quilt & am so happy I found this channel; quick, easy instructions without going too fast or wasting my time either. ThanQ!

great tutorial and I never paid attention to your daughters hair, actually never noticed until I read some comments some people are just distracted easily, they just need to keep focused and with your experience and having to answer a lot of our question, I just saw you asking questions we might ask your daughter, so I never thought you two were fighting for talking time just clarifying for some of us new quilters. Keep your tutorials going....love them!
