Loving the idea of leather kits! Removes all of the difficulty of cutting out patterns and lining up holes, but allows for infinite customization. Love it!

This is a very interesting project! I hope you make a leather version of actual medieval plate harness without outlandish decoration and just basic coloring (no blotchy antiquing). A simplified project that shows how leather can imitate historical armor. Good luck!

Absolutely awesome. I already would like to purchase it, however What is its size? I don't see it on its page and I have a big old head. I don't want to spend $80+S&H for it to not fit.

Should fit roughly 22.5", give or take a little depending on how you shape it. If the response is good I'm sure additional sizes will be added.

Very interesting. A few questions: Why rivets over sewing? Is sewing generally reserves for straight or layered attachments and curved for rivets? Also why didn't you dye the interior of the helmet?

You can sew shaped and curved objects. It is done all the time - belt bag, holster, knife sheath, .... I think they are going with rivets for the look (primarily) and because they want to make the kit seem to be easy to finish.

Sewing can and is done often. However. You need a special sewing machine to do leather. Normal ones aren’t strong enough. Also, hand sewing suckkkkks on the hands. Rivets enhance the look. Now for the interior. You could dye it if you want. But who’s gunna be looking at the inside while you are wearing? Also in the off chance you get dye bleed…that bleed off would on the inside.

The rivets are for looks, making it look like metal. You can use stitching just as easily, if the pattern was made for it. Look at the skull baseball leather project as an example.

I can be sewn if you prefer but I think riveting is easier and more approachable for new leather crafters. I didn't dye the interior so people know that it is an option. For a square one beginner project it is probably best if they don't so they don't have to worry about sealing it properly (and dye bleeding if not)

Can this be hot water hardened, after assembly, dried on a wig head or something similar?

yes but just follow my instructions in the videos and you'll be shocked at how hard the leather gets from those processes.

Why not send a 3x3 square or scrap so they can test dye without using the kit pieces?

Oh I have no doubt at all that if you ask them for a piece of scrap to accompany a kit they would not hesitate to do so.

A leather helmet *might* help protect against a grazing or glancing shot but any direct impact is going right through. It’s leather, not a ballistic fabric like Kevlar.

Just to play devils advocate here, are you afraid of backlash if weaver starts to slip on the quality leather they use on the kit pieces? Or If they decide to "make their own line" of products similar to yours?

I was a long time customer of Weaver before I was a collaborator, they won't skimp on quality. And Weaver already has patterns and things they make, this is just one new direction for them that hopefully opens the doors to new leathercrafters that might not be interested in conventional leathercraft like saddles and wallets and such.
