Hello friends,
And welcome back to Swiftlessons for another beginner gypsy jazz tutorial. In today's session, I've been joined by Hot Club of Philadelphia guitarist Barry Wahrhaftig, together we will be breaking down basic rhythms, chord progressions and lead concepts taken from the famous Django Reinhardt song "Minor Swing." Let's get started
Study resources courtesy Barry Warhaftig at:

I discovered this rhythm in a subway of Paris while looking at the face of fancy stranger passengers and a 3 member band playing while standing up against our wagon. It was awesome. I paid like 2 euros for a nice ride and great music. I just needed my glass of bubbly champagne but...they would’ve thrown me out.

Strange thing, i've been meaning to pick up some Django for a while, my style has slowly been slipping towards gypsy jazz for a while. I watched this, and realised I pretty much already knew how to play this. Picked it up instantly, but the lesson truly gave it that push. Thanks a lot, gonna learn some more!

Ha, it seemed to be the case for Django. Barry and I were actually discussing how many of these techniques were developed around Django’s injury. The limitations were in someways the catalyst for an entire sub-genre.

Yes. Certain things do work better when you have to play them with only two fingers. It also reduces the number of options your brain must choose from when you want to play a desired sound ( a lick).

thanks much ! very well explained ,and perfect to play along with ! from reading the comments , very few guitar players in the u.s. have seen an acoustic guitar that is not a martin , gibson or : classical "style dreadnaught / slope shouldered , round sound hole guitar. the guitars these gentlemen are playing are selmer / maccafferi style , that is , all with have a zero fret and slotted headstock . the guitar with the small oval sound hole is called =petite bouche [ small mouth in french ] and the other guitar is a grande bouche large mouth ,D- sound hole. some may have a cutaway , but traditionally not built with a cutaway. and they will have a " trapeze style " bridge . in the style of traditional archtop jazz guitars. and these guitars will have a scale length of 26 1/2 inches [ + /- ] . playing in the manouche style , to get the feel and " woody " sound , you need to play on an acoustic guitar , not electric ,, it will never have the desired sound and tone, but you can certainly play on the acoustic you already have . the strings of choice are light gauge = 10 - 45 or med. light = 11 -46 . steel strings , and there string sets made for this style of play for around $10.00 . i hope this answers some of the questions.

Listen carefully to django playing la pompe even straight without the up stroke. The second strum down is not supposed to be muted, the way your friend plays does swing but it doesnt represent the way django played. The first down hit should outline the bass and can sometimes be played for longer at the start of new bar and second stroke down all the strings down short and dry, then adding a up stroke muting the strings kechak chak kechak chak and so on. Maybe you should redo the video and teach the traditional way of playing la pompe not stephan wrembel

Agreed, This video presents what I've heard many call the "American" version of La Pompe with beats 2 and 4 muted instead of accented and possibly half muted to increase the crunch the way Django and most contemporary gypsy players play. In later years Django dropped the upstroke.

Hello Barry . Could you please explain why a Bmi6 suddenly changes name into E7/b evenwhile there is no E in the chord. I'am confused.
@reese2940
@reese2940 Жыл бұрын
Late reply, but posting it for other folks who are browsing the comments. Often in jazz stuff the root is said to be 'implied', whether its from the chord changes in the song, or just from the bassist playing the root. The E7/B that we see contains a B (5th of E) a G# (3rd of E) and a D (7th of E), so we have most of the ingredients of an E except for the root itself, but we say that its close enough. If you are feeling spicy while playing you can bounce the bass note from the B (7th fret E string) to the E (7th fret A string) on each strum to really sell the 'E' nature of the chord. There are more reasons as to why it should be called an E7 vs a Bmi6 that barely matter in the end, but it has to do with the scale we are in and the relation that an E7 has to an Ami.
