picked up a 10lb anchor at a yard sale for $3. Milk crate has been a must since day one, attached four cut down PVC with heavy duty zip ties to hold my rods and net. Bungee it down to my kayak. Got leashes for my poles and I cover the hooks on the rod with pool noodles, just in case I flip in the surf....wouldn't want to catch a hook... Buy what you can afford, hit yard sales and Facebook Marketplace, etc.

A MUST for any boater is A PERSONAL AIR HORN. While the pole light is required in many states an air horn sadly is not. LOUD AIR HORN NOISE IS YOUR FRIEND when a wayward speed boat or jet ski comes at you and the boat's Captain doesn't see you. Keep it in your PFD pocket for quick reach. I have a commercial grade Pelican Peddle Boat and NEVER PUSH OFF WITHOUT MY AIR HORN.

If you're going to buy a PFD with the mesh lower back and the flotation all pushed up to the top, make damn sure it clears YOUR seatback. Some backrests are much higher than others. If the foam isn't quite high enough, your PFD will be pushed up around your ears and you'll be miserably uncomfortable. There are touring and fishing PFDs with thin, full-length rear foam which are also suiited to highback seats, and they work with all of them.

Love your work and hints mate. I'm more of a land based hunter than fisher. But I'm ex Australian Army and have heaps of injuries which in the least slowed me down I was turning into a hermit realised it and thought heavily what I could do to get out there again. I had done a bit of canoeing in the past and was properly trained in the skill, so I figured maybe that might be the way to go. So after 6 months of in your face and on line research I decided to just Do It and got myself a Pescador Pilot, yeah jumped right in hey lol but I felt very comfortable in it so went for it in much the same way I buy a car. Another option for an anchor that I use and recommend, use an empty gallon of milk jug with 550 chord attached on the handle...obviously. Fill it with water, drop it down. You could add a little weight if you wanted, drop a couple rocks in the jug, but not really needed, personal preference. When you pull it up, drain the water and you basically have a now weightless anchor

@rogerskugrud8609
@rogerskugrud8609 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks a lot for pushing the PFD. Many people don't realize that a kayak tipping over is a very unlikely event. In my opinion, being tipped out of the kayak, especially many of the. Sit-on-top styles, is by far more like!! That means the kayak still stays upright, and you were just kind of tipped out it almost feels like you got thrown out. So you're in the water, and the kayak in the process of tipping you out get shoved away from you,. And if there's even the slightest of wind the kayak will rapidly blow away from you. This can happen amazingly fast and swimming to try catch up with it may not be possible"( this is because the kayak is so light and sit so high in the water the breeze or wind can catch it and blow it at amazing speeds. If you don't have a good flotation device you are in real trouble. Your only hope is someone to see you or maybe be close enough to shore just swim there. If you are in an isolated area, it may even be wise to hook a rope, or lanyard or, a strap between you and your kayak. Orbi fishing on a real calm day. There is even a danger if your fishing on the calm side of the lake and the wind is blowing offshore. The water maybe calm but you don't realize there is maybe a lively Breeze blowing your kayak quicker than you realize. Bonus! This can also happen in a canoe, they are harder to get tipped out of, but if you do they sit so high in the air and Solo in the water they can blow away from you at speeds that people can't even imagine. Hope this helps

I'd like to add: Be very careful when using the fish grips. It's real easy for a big bass to shake and they slip out of your hand. That would be really bad for the fish. If it's not tethered to the boat at least put the loop over your wrist or just be careful and focus on keeping a good grip while using them.

Well done for a starter's needs. Some additional suggestions: for life jacket, I use an inflatable type - I have a high seat, and the only thing between me and the seat is the harness. BUT one needs to be mindful to change the cartridge per instructions after a long period of time. For an anchor I use the 4 leaf type; there are videos of how to rig it with a zip tie so it does not become stuck in rocks, tree stumps, etc. One objection to your anchor rope retrieval: if for some reason you could be in danger of being swamped, either have a sharp dedicated knife immediately available or find another way to handle the anchor line which can be immediately "unacnhored". Something which keeps the anchor line excess contained but can be tossed overboard and float. Coiled lanyards reduce clutter of multiple items tethered by 550 cord - and should go on anything you don't want to lose: fishing poles, non-floating nets, hawg trough, and anything else expensive enough you don't want to lose it. Great presentation - hope you don't mind the alternatives.
@Larry77777

Exactly right. "Something which keeps the anchor line excess contained but can be tossed overboard and float." I sawed off a plastic 8"DIA orange Home Depot pail, injected foam into it, and put perimeter brackets on it to wrap the excess. Hangs from my anchor trolley with a carabiner that I can unclip quickly. Lets me go fetch a stuck fish or stuck lure.

Those retractable dog leashes you get at pet stores make the best anchor rope system for kayaks and they come in different lengths, so be sure to get a long one.

First thank you for your service. Awesome list! Also just a tip. Carry a whistle with you if you are in “iffy” rough waters. I have them for my wife & kids and myself for emergencies. Might tip over and your older or hit your head anything. I can hear a whistle from a longer distance than yelling.

That is one of the hardest things to do. I have four or five 3600 boxes that I pack before each kayak tournament or trip. If my tackle doesn't fit in those then it ain't going with me.

I just found this video and I am trying to get into some kayak fishing. However- due to limited space- I am looking into an inflatable one. Any suggestions on that?
