There's a lot of misinformation out there for metal stamping beginners. In this series of videos, I'll walk you through some of the tools and supplies you'll need for starting off, and address some of the not-so-awesome advice and recommendations I've seen.
In this video, I'll talk about metal stamps and stamping supplies. By starting off with the right supplies and stamps, you'll actually save yourself money and headaches over time!
(Please note that some metal stamps are indeed rated to use on stainless steel, but it's just really important to check your stamps' rating before you accidentally ruin them on the wrong materials.)

Just came across your video and glad I did. I am new to metal stamping. I did not realize that one metal was softer than another for stamping. I had purchased stainless steel blanks, not realizing that it was very difficult to stamp on. Tried five times then gave up. After looking at the kit I bought I saw that it came with aluminum blanks which was easy to stamp. Now I know there are other metals I can use thanks to your video!

Thank you so much!! I've been thinking about starting this hobby , but I see that the impressions are expensive as well as the tools! I'm so glad you did this tutorial, it saved me from buying the chasing hammer and the hole punch I was thinking of buying! I've already spent so much money on beads and thought this would be fun to add to my jewelry making. When I see all those impressions you bought, I can see me going overboard with purchasing and unsure whether I can stamp metal that well! Lol Anyway, thank you!

Iris Antonetty When I first started, I had seen videos where people said they kept buying fonts and designs, and I couldn't understand that! But now... I think I have 12 fonts and at least 75 designs. And that's NOTHING compared to some of my friends! 😂 It can definitely become an addiction.

Angela Wiser hi there! I think organization is a constant struggle for most of us creative types! I currently have a few organizers from Harbor Freight - the kind with a jillion drawers for nuts and bolts - that I store my blanks, beads, and findings in. I also have several little containers like the one you pointed out, and those are just from WalMart. The best price for those is at the beginning of the school year, when school supplies go on sale. Welcome to the stamping club!

Hi! Thank you so much for all the tips! I’m new in jewelry stamping and you have helped me so much. ❤️ Do you have tips for stamping in brass? Does a brass hammer can turn into a better result? I get a lot of double stamping and don’t get a clean look neither a nice stamp 😢
@makeitkate3240
@makeitkate3240 2 ай бұрын
I prefer using a brass hammer. To fix your double stamping, try putting your bench block on a more solid surface when you stamp. Like a counter or a really sturdy table. And then just more practice!❤️

Hi I've learned a lot from your videos. Can you please tell me what is the difference of using a large bench block or a small one. Are large and small used for different purposes or the same? Thanks
@makeitkate3240
@makeitkate3240 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Christine. A large bench block and a small one will accomplish the same thing. Really the only difference is size. A small one is less expensive (less raw material used) and more common to find. It's great when you have limited space to work with, and it's all you'll need if you're stamping as a hobby or you make lots of one-of-a-kind pieces, or you don't do a large volume of business. Even if you're making larger pieces where sections hang off, like bracelets, you can just move it around on the bench block. A large block is great if you do a large volume of the same thing. For example, I recently made 100 pendants, all with the same design. The bigger bench block was a big help for that because I could tape a bunch of them to the big block, side by side, and stamp them out assembly line style. Other than that, I find that I only use a small section of the big block anyway.

Hello thanks for the videos they are very helpful. I noticed that on one of my projects during stamping I made scratches. I can't really pinpoint how, but have you heard if this happening and would you know how to prevent it?
@makeitkate3240
@makeitkate3240 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! That’s definitely happened to me a lot. If the scratches are on the front, my guess would be that your stamp slid along the surface of the piece when you were trying to get it into position and line up the letters. If they’re on the back, it’s just from making contact with the surface of your bench block (or anvil or whatever you’re stamping on). If you’ve ruled those things out, maybe you can describe the scratches and we can figure out where they’re coming from. :)

Thank you so so much..Is there a specific gauge for the metals?
@makeitkate3240
@makeitkate3240 6 жыл бұрын
Betzaida Cajigas It really just depends on the project. I use a lot of 14 gauge aluminum for pieces that will remain flat. Lots of copper and brass come int 20 or 18g. I like 18g aluminum for the plaques on leather cuffs, because it's nice and bendable. I like 20 or 18g for pieces that I will dap. And I like 14g for cuff bracelets (the bangle style) because I want it to hold its shape, but still be adjustable for the wearer. Some shapes that I order hand cut are too intricate to cut from thinner gauges, so they're cut in 14g.

Do some stamping sets/ brands give a better quality impression than others?
@makeitkate3240
@makeitkate3240 7 жыл бұрын
Savannahali Absolutely! As a rule of thumb, the more expensive the set, the more crisp the impression. With the pricier sets, the end of the shaft will taper down to the letter, so that you can see exactly where the letters line up. With the less expensive sets, you have to go more by feel and practice. The less expensive ones are generally only rated to use on soft metals, whereas the more costly ones are frequently rated to use on metals like stainless steel. Lots of stampede prefer to only work with the softer metals, so that part isn't an issue, but if you're stamping on spoons and things, you'll want the stainless rated stamps.

Do your aluminum blanks get scratched up or tarnish at all over time?
@makeitkate3240
@makeitkate3240 7 жыл бұрын
Sarah George I'm so sorry I missed your question! Aluminum does not tarnish at all, but because it's a very soft metal, it will get scratched. 1100 is pure grade, food safe aluminum and is hypoallergenic. But because it is pure aluminum, it will scratch the fastest. 3003 aluminum is an alloy and has other metals in it, so it won't scratch as fast, but some people are allergic to the other metals in it.

What stamp set do you recommend for metal spoons?
@makeitkate3240
@makeitkate3240 4 жыл бұрын
MissPImake I don’t know that there’s a single set to recommend. The most important thing is that you make sure the set you choose is rated for use on stainless steel. Those sets are typically more expensive, because they require additional treatment to be able to stamp on harder metals without the impressions flattening out on the stamps.
