Do you REALLY need to have a power outlet close by or can a heavy duty 3 prong extension cord safely be used?

you got any tips when installing multiple of these? for example, we have problems where motor 1 will sync to light from motor 2 or 3 or vice versa. sometimes one motor will even sync to multiple lights.... it can be a real pain then trying to unlearn and relearn the lights to correspond with the correct motor.
