3. Choose transfer partner redemption option.
- Chase = Transfer to Travel Partners
- Amex = Transfer Points
- Citi = Points Transfer
- Capital One = Convert Rewards
4. Select airline or hotel program, then enter your Member ID & the number of points you want to transfer.
5. Confirm & submit.
PART 5: 13 THINGS TO KNOW
1. Transfer partners only work in 1 direction
2. Restrictions or limits may exist
3. Amex charges an Excise Tax Offset Fee when transferring to U.S. airlines
4. Transfer Ratios may vary by program & partner
5. Transfer Ratios have little to do with how much value you get
6. Value Per Point Calculation: [(Cash Price) / Points Price] x 100 = Value Per Point
7. How to determine if a redemption is good
8. How to determine if you should use transfer partners
9. Do your research BEFORE transferring points
10. Do not transfer points speculatively
11. Learn the airline alliances (oneworld Alliance, Star Alliance, Sky Team Alliance)
12. Be aware of airline partnerships
13. Be flexible

👉 *TYPO:* At 9:31 I showed Marriott with a 1:2 transfer ratio. That should have been Hilton 😄✌ The thought process / strategy is still the same, however.

Got me really excited there for a second with that Marriott 1:2. Though, the Hilton 1:2 is not a true 1:2 as their point nights are usually double of a marriott stay. So it’s honestly a 1:1

With the increased spike in delays and cancellations, it’s more risky to book flights via a third party (like portals). If your flight gets cancelled the airline may not be able to rebook you directly. You may be stuck having to call chase/amex/whoever while you’re at the airport to get rebooked. Another reason to use transfer partners instead of booking through the portal.
@MarkReese

Great point. And yep, I'm a big fan of booking direct for that reason ✈️

OMG. So true. I booked via Chase portal and they changed my flight schedule multiple times. I called back and forth between Chase and Qatar. I ended up cancelling the flight and rebooked directly with airlines.

Great video. I wish I had this knowledge last October when I got my CSP and just used the portal to set up flights and hotels. Just got 3x back. I had set up Southwest and IHG accounts but had no idea how to do any of this stuff you showed in the video. Am sure I would have saved a ton using transfer partners and points instead of getting 3x back. Have since used card for 2x back at hotel stays. I will now start transferring points or use portal and do comparison shopping to get much better value especially on flights. Thank you for making this video. Probably your second most important one. Your understanding credit card statement video is number one.

Thanks Shawn! I'm encouraged to hear this video gave you strong value 😃💯 Also, you may want to consider booking Southwest flights (via phone w/ Chase rep) & IHG hotels directly via the Chase UR portal instead of transferring Chase points into those 2 programs. On average... - Southwest points = 1.2¢ each - IHG points = 0.5¢ each However, Chase UR points have the following guaranteed values with the following credit cards... - CSP = 1.25¢ - CSR = 1.50¢

You are a true credit card guru!! I think I’m going to stick with 2 vendors (Chase & Amex) because I don’t want to have too many vendors which is so many different apps to have to keep up with. This is good info for me as now I know how to redeem UR w/my CSP when I’m ready. Also, with your division, if I got it correctly. Apple products give a 1:1 ratio on UR.

Chase + Amex = great setup! 😃💳 Regarding Apple Products, yes, 1 point = 1¢, so for instance 10,000 UR points = $100. There may also be limited-time promotions that run throughout the year when UR points can be worth 1.25¢ - 1.50¢ each for Apple products depending on the card you have. Here's a link to another video showing that when I redeemed for an Apple Watch 🎬 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pNhpZ8ed28eWc2w.html

Thanks for the info. I’m not sure if you already made a video but how will you know how much points to transfer? Do you go to portal and look at the dollar and point equivalent there? Go to the airline/hotel website? Because all they show is the dollar amount.
@MarkReese
@MarkReese Жыл бұрын
You'll want to search for award flights on those airlines (i.e. search for 'prices' in miles, not cash)😃✈ For example, if you look at United.com, there's a little checkbox that says 'Book with miles.' That's the view you'll want to see in order to see how many miles flights cost w/ different airlines.

Great video and great advice, Mark (especially on the alliance part where booking via a partner airline may lead to a better value) and one more thing I noted : some airlines have bonus offers! I see that in the venture X section where both AF and BA were offering 20% bonus miles! Not sure if you mentioned this already in the video. I have a question : can I link multiple cards to one award program to boost miles? Transfer from BILT and Venture x to af flying blue as an example?
@MarkReese
@MarkReese 10 ай бұрын
Correct, all of the major transferable point programs offer limited-time bonuses to select partners throughout the year. Yes, you can transfer points from all major programs (Chase, Amex, Citi, C1, Bilt) to common transfer partners by linking the same airline / hotel account to each one.

You need to make an account with each airline & hotel program to which you want to transfer. No need for an alliance account.

Awesome video, Mark. I am forwarding to friends and family. For #8, if I value Chase points at 2 cents per point wouldn’t I be getting poor value with either redemption in your examples (portal or transfer partner)? In either case I’d be better off paying cash, no?
@MarkReese
@MarkReese Жыл бұрын
Thanks J Dawg! If you value Chase points at 2.0¢ each at a minimum, then yes, you may want to pay cash for the examples shown in the video. Better to save the points for a different trip where you could get that 2.0¢ (or greater) value for a much bigger savings at that time.

Hi Mark, For a higher success rate of booking 3 business class seats with points, is JAL much more feasible than ANA? For 3 premium economy seats, is it fair to say much easier for both JAL and ANA? Is there any way to use both AA and Alaska miles transferred to book 3 JAL business flights? Your insight will be greatly appreciated!

Mark, great video! Can I pool my transfer partner from different CC's? Example, say I have a chase card and 1000 points, and I transfer them to United(example) and then I wanted to transfer 1000 points from my BILT credit card. Can I transfer the points to United as well and have 2000 united points? Thanks for your help
@MarkReese
@MarkReese Жыл бұрын
You can do that as long as there is a common transfer partner among all the cards.
@blakinsideandout
@blakinsideandout Жыл бұрын
great video. I needed this. I know you're probably swarmed with replies to this video and your poll earlier but can you plan a video about hidden information when applying for cards?? As an example, I watched a video that says there are 3 separate kind of visa cards (visa signature, visa unlimited, I forgot the 3rd). visa unlimited cards supposedly have a minimum credit line of $10K and require a minimum credit score of 720. (Venture X was their example for this card). Another example from a separate video said that the max credit line a certain company (I can't remember which) would only approve someone for 50% of their annual income. I'm sure you probably know of others. this kind of information would, I think, help alot of people out in conjunction with getting them excited about a shiny new card.
@MarkReese
@MarkReese Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion, Kane! 👊 Correct, there are 3 levels of Visa credit cards: - Visa - Visa Signature - Visa Infinite Each one may offer higher benefits, higher minimum credit lines, better insurance & protections, etc.

Hi, thanks for the video, very informative. One question that I don't see people answering. Example 5 (17:11) you say to transfer Avios and then book with a partner airline. But how do we do that? When I go to British Airlines it doesn't show all the AA flights I saw, for example. Going to AA site, you have to use AA points.. Basically my question is: How do I use my transfer partners points to book directly with an airline in their alliance? Thank you!
@MarkReese
@MarkReese Жыл бұрын
Hi Mark - the booking part can vary based on which partners are being used. For the British Airways Avios to American AAdvantage bookings, here's a link to a great post by Million Mile Secrets that goes over the process: millionmilesecrets.com/guides/how-to-book-american-airlines-flights-with-british-airways-avios-points/

This was so helpful! Quick question, to be able to transfer from bank to the partner, do I just need to create an account with desired airline (login/password?) or do I need to have some sort of card / membership with the transfer partner? Thanks again
@MarkReese
@MarkReese Жыл бұрын
You just need to create an account with each partner. That way you'll have an account # to link on the Amex side.

Very helpful. I'm still on the fence of whether cashing all the points out and putting it in investments or not would be the better option. I figure I don't travel too much anyway, and if the average return is 10% a year, using simple interest for sake of easy math. Chase points invested for 2.5 years (probably less due to the reality of compounding interest) would put the "value" of the points at 1.25 just like the sapphire preferred, 5 years if you have the reserve. But then anything after five years is bonus. Then there is the reality of if you don't do something with the points soon you are losing out, points redemption and program changes, inflation, years of lost interest. Example, I'll probably break 1 million Chase points soon, and for now we've been banking them for a theoretical travel. The only certainty is while they points sit in that balance pool, they do no good and lose value. It's very tempting to just cash them all out and then if I ever do take a trip then just pay cash for it. The only thing I'm holding back on is if I could do one of those extraordinary trips like the maldives for a few hundred instead of tens of thousands cash. I'm very suspect of the people that post those videos. If it was so easy and commonplace why isn't everyone under the sun doing it...I mean come on, a $20k+ trip for only points and a few hundred bucks? I don't quite buy it. I think something else has to be at play here. /end thought.
@MarkReese
@MarkReese Жыл бұрын
There's no trickery involved. The reason why everyone is NOT doing it is because the vast majority of people: (a) Don't know how to do it and (b) Are not willing to get a bunch of credit cards to get enough points to make it happen. It can also be difficult to plan. The amount of research involved with transfer partners, alliances, routes, award availability, etc. can be a real headache. If you don't travel much, then it probably doesn't make sense to keep collecting travel points. If I were in that situation, I'd personally cash them out & invest. Then, if / when I wanted to get into travel, I could simply get more cards with more bonuses. It's not like if you redeem them all, you can never earn more again. There's no scarcity of points in the U.S. market.

Mark , what’s the best way to go Savannah Ga - Rome Italy flight wise ,Delta or some other airline? I have Amex platinum with 400k points , confused with best way to accomplish this . Thx
@MarkReese
@MarkReese Жыл бұрын
Hi TB - I don't assist with itinerary building on a 1-on-1 basis. Building trips takes time to research, and there can be dozens of combinations. I'd suggest using Google flights to search for flights on that route. See which airlines fly there & take note of which ones may be direct transfer partners of your bank-point currencies and/or indirect partners of those currencies (e.g. Transfer from Amex > Airline X > Use miles on alliance partner Y). Here's a link to a post by Upgraded Points that you may find really helpful: upgradedpoints.com/travel/best-ways-to-fly-to-italy-with-points/

Don't forget, sometimes cash is the best deal. Save the points for a better deal later. Wyndham is a great example, the may charge 15,000 points for a room costing $80 or $250. Don't use the points for the $80 room.
