I have spent the last six months or so doing lots of tablet weaving. KZfaq and books by Maikki Karisto and Mervi Pasanen have been a great help. Here I discuss my learning journey, try to share tips, and talk about things that first felt difficult for me to understand as a beginner. How to set out your weaving space, how to read the pattern, and how to hold the tablets so that manipulating individual tablets is easy.

All the patterns I have woven are found in this book that I highly recommend (This is not a sponsored post. I just love the book!)

I have done hours of tablet weaving as a beginner and I've spent the whole month trying to master a birka skip-hole pattern in vain. I've watched more than a handfull of tutorials on youtube to understand how to read a pattern. I have even bought a small book on tablet weaving for begginners. Yet, you are the first to put me out of my frustration by finally telling that while reading a pattern, if you have to turn backward the tablet, the color to look for is in the second hole on top (position 4/D/A/VO), not on the first hole (1/A/D/HO). It is not that obvious for beginners, even when you try to understand the theory of the twists. Thank you so much for specifying this. Finally, my waste of hours and yarn is ending ! Your crafts are really beautiful by the way !

For the back strap method I’ve heard the back pain can be improved by lowering the belt further down your hips or ideally sitting on it! That way your weight holds it instead of your back muscles and it’s supposed to be more comfortable, haven’t tried it myself but figured I’d pass along the tip in case it helps for the times you want to weave on the go

Thank you! I’m glad you found my explanations understandable. It’s not always easy to explain things clearly and I’m always worrying that the language barrier keeps me from expressing everything like I want to!

Fantastic video! You’re incredibly clear in every step and really explain things well. I always thought that tablet weaving would be too complicated since I’m so used to rigid heddle band weaving but this video really helped to make tablet weaving make more sense and seem like something I could actually manage to do. Thank you so much!

I don't know anything about weaving, but a bunch of videos showed up in my feed recently. This has been the first one to explain tablet weaving well enough that it's clear what's actually going on. Thanks.

I really love your loom, and you have so many good tips for us new tablet weavers. Thank you! A question about your loom. Could one use drawer handles at both ends? I’m not sure I have the tools to shape the pieces of wood you used at the front end. Is there a good reason to NOT wrap both ends around handles? Thanks again for all your great info and inspiration 🥰
@withmyhandsdream
@withmyhandsdream Жыл бұрын
Thank you and yes, you could use table handles at both ends if it’s easier to construct that way. As far as I know the only benefit of the clamp is that you can weave a bit closer to the end of the warp. The difference is pretty minimal though. Use whatever works for you!

@@withmyhandsdream thanks for that. Can’t wait to try it! I’ve been using my rigid heddle loom which works, but I’d like to have a dedicated tablet loom.

I see that you have used swivels. That might be a solution. I need to unwrap my warp after each row and it's a nightmare to untangle so many strands!

This is fantastic thankyou, can I ask roughly how long it would take to complete a basic patterned belt? I am just starting out as a beginner & feel a little daunted!
@withmyhandsdream
@withmyhandsdream 3 ай бұрын
Thanks. It really depends. If you use thick yarn and a simple pattern you might make a belt in a few hours. For a really complicated pattern and thin yarn it takes weeks.

Hello, this is super useful thank you! I love your homemade loom. I would like to make one but wonder how you made the clamp nearest to you swivel? Thank you!
@withmyhandsdream
@withmyhandsdream Жыл бұрын
Thanks! To answer your question, the lower portion of the clamp is screwed through the holes in the wooden side-pieces. It is not a tight fit, so the clamp can still move.

thankyou for this lovely video. I would like to see more videos but though I have subscribed and liked I don't seem to get any in my feed. What should I do?
@withmyhandsdream
@withmyhandsdream 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment! You can try to ring the bell icon and choose ”All”. You can also see videos that don’t appear on the feed when you go to the ”Subcriptions” section pf KZfaq. On my phone it is located at the bottom of the screen, second from the right but it may be in another place. Also by clicking the channel name below the video you’ll get to the front page of my channel with the newest videos. Older videos can then be accessed via the Videos menu! There should be 48 for you to watch. I hope some of these helped. Oh, one more thing. I post the links to most of my videos on my blog at withmyhandsdream.com. So, if none of those tips work, you can go and subscribe to the blog. Then you’ll be getting a notification to your email every single time I post! Also, I sometimes post some extra things there that I’ve made but not filmed!

Hi there, was this setup with AD closest to the sitter or DA? Gorgeous work!
@withmyhandsdream
@withmyhandsdream Жыл бұрын
If you mean the beginning position, the AD was on the top with the A closest to the weaver. But then later the tablets are turned separately so the order is pretty random.

When did iron age end?
@withmyhandsdream

Depends on the area. In Finland, it is considered ending somewhere in the 12th or 13th centuries, so pretty late.
