Welcome to my backyard builds. Last year I published this video • This Video Will Change... . titled "This video will change how you see wood. I promise." It's almost at 5 million views at this time. A good friend @FixitFingers and his wife suggested to make another compilation with my backyard builds, and here it is. But it's not just a compilation. It's new and old projects completely re-written and edited into one long video.
It also features contributions from @dainermade , @JackmanWorks , @turgworks4138 , @diyforknuckleheads and @BeauMiles . I also mention @Foureyes.Furniture when talking about pallet wood is a scam and @MikeFarrington about the biscuit joiner. Go check them all out.
🔨 About This Video:
In this video, I dismantle pallets to build garden furniture, craft a cabin from storm-felled trees, and eventually set up my own woodworking haven-all filmed over the span of three years starting from the lockdown summer of 2020. Discover how I make use of every resource, including repurposing old tools and learning from each mistake along the way.
🛠️ Projects Covered:
Pallet Dismantling and Reusing: Starting with basic hand tools to sophisticated methods, learn how to efficiently dismantle pallets for various projects.
Garden Table Creation: Watch the full process from cleaning boards to constructing a sturdy, rustic table.
Cabin Building with My Daughter: A heartwarming and challenging project using logs from nearby forests, showcasing the process of milling, designing, and building from scratch.
Tool Evolution: From a handsaw and a cheap drill to acquiring essential woodworking tools like a circular saw, planer, and the mighty biscuit joiner.
🌍 Setting:
Set in my backyard in Denmark, this video not only explores woodworking but also delves into the serene and industrious lifestyle that rural living offers. From the joys of working with natural materials to the trials of building in unpredictable weather, this series encapsulates the essence of DIY spirit.
👷 Why Watch This?
Inspiration for Budget Builds: Perfect for DIY enthusiasts looking for low-cost building ideas.
Comprehensive Building Techniques: From novice mistakes to professional tips, there’s something for every level of experience.
Community and Family: Building projects that bring people together, creating memories and practical skills alongside lasting structures.

These are the videos people want to see. We're tired of seeing videos where the person has an entire workshop with the most high tech tools saying "Here's how to make this!" Also stop sponsoring Betterhelp, they're known to sell data and not hire professionals. For that reason a lot of youtubers have stopped accepting sponsors from them. Also, I can't imagine how it feels. But he would've wanted you to be happy.

The fact that you were making the cabin with your daughter just for some reason puts a big ol smile on my face every time there is footage of it. Reminds me of when my father owned a house building company and would take me and my brother to the sites and we would help with some stuff, as well as be absolutely reckless kids and play on the roofs of houses and what-not. I hope some day to be able to do something similar with children of my own. Amazing work brother, even if you had to join a few wood-related cults to get here!

Hello from Arizona, USA! My first time watching your channel. I didn’t want the video to end. Beautiful land you have. I was amazed at your projects and determination. My son and husband and I built a big chicken house. The base was a huge pallet we found out in the desert where we lived at the time. Saved a lot of time and money. That was over 7 years ago and it was moved to its current location over 100 miles on a trailer. It is still intact and has housed many hens over the years. You’re right…great memories from building that chicken house. I think I loved the drawer fronts you built the best. It literally looked like stacked logs under your work bench. It was absolutely beautiful. A work of art. Great video!

Hello Jesper, i'm Robbe (21 years old) from Belgium. I'm loving the video and i've always found woodworking an amazing skill to have. Since pallets are also pretty easily accesible around here i might try out some starter stuff this summer. I love the calm style of video's u seem to have and how the video is made. Keep up the great work!!

Kia Ora, My mum is from Denmark (first language I ever spoke), Dad is from Invercargill New Zealand. Brother is born in Plymouth England. I'm born in Grimsby England. Dad's a classic wooden boat builder, mum was working at the London Seamans Mission at the time. After he'd circumnavigated (and decided on religion half way through) on the yacht he'd built, he was over there in England. Met mum and blah blah. Bought a 78ft wooden fishing boat in Denmark, named it King David and converted it to liveaboard ketch. Sailed to the Falkland Islands where they set up the Falkland Islands Lighthouse Seamans Mission and ran it for around 6yrs. Then we all packed up and came here to Whangarei NZ where we've been ever since. My wife is from Erie, Pennsylvania and we've got a 6yr old son. Can't have any more though seeing as she's got an extremely rare blood disorder/cancer/concoction of sorts. I used to do crane/trucks etc, but after she got sick and I got bored of sitting around I decided to take the plunge and finally study towards something I really want to do, so am now in my second year of a Bsc of Applied Science in Environmental Management with the dream of getting a MsC or a PhD in either mycology, freshwater ecology or biology, or marine biology or ecology. I love working with wood in my spare time, and have an original combination Coronet Major lathe which I'm hoping to get pieces for. Other than woodworking, I'll be anywhere near, on, or in the sea. Keep up the good mahi Jesper!

I love pallets so much that my friends joke about getting me a van full of pallets for my birthday. My way of processing them is with a multitool, cutting the nails between the boards. It's very fast, keeps the boards at good length and the nails give a good rustic look.

Pedantic detail: At 23:45 you said you used a half lap joint on the cabin frame. That is actually a joint that is almost never talked about in modern times called a scarf joint! In the Medieval period these joint were often made overly complex by craftsmen as a way of signing their work. A carpenter would become known by the specific way they made their scarf joints. In many old churches in England (and presumably elsewhere in Europe) you can find a completely unnecessary scarf joint placed inconspicuously in the corner among the rafters. This is how carpenters whose names have been lost to history are known to have built several different buildings! In 400 years, someone will find your cabin and be able to ascertain that it was built by Jesper, the famous man whose signature scarf joints were so confident he did not bother worrying about lateral forces or or horizontal tension!!! (j/k - I love your videos and your work is beautiful! It's inspiring and genuinely touching to see someone so willing to tackle such a huge project with their daughter)

So despite my wife helping to come up with the idea for this video, I had put off watching Jesper's Backyard Builds for a few weeks, as I wanted to give it the time it deserved and mistakenly thought, _ "Oh! This will be another compilation of build videos I have seen before so, no rush." _ *Oh how wrong I was.* This morning I came home from 12 hours of night shift and my baby daughter had kept my wife up the whole night cranky daddy had left her once again. So I took her to let my wife sleep and together we settled into the calming tones of our favourite Vikiing Woodworker. She was asleep in my arms in 5 minutes, and in that time I had already worked out this was not just another compilation video... it was art. Thank you Jesper, you are inspirational in the true sense of the word. Just randomly came across your channel and enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Not gonna lie, I found your voice comforting and the video uncannily relaxing. Watching and commenting from San Antonio, Texas in the USA. Thanks for the content.
