In today's tutorial we're going to walkthrough how to apply compression to a lead vocal. So what does compression DO? Well, as a beginner I think it's important to grasp the concept that a compressor will reduce the variance in audio levels. Or another way to say it is a tool like a compressor can help make inconsistent volume levels more consistent.
This is super helpful when it comes to vocals in particular. We really want to nail down a consistent performance and hear every word. The thing is, vocals are a performance- and over the course of a vocal take you'll see these peaks and valleys in the audio levels. Parts are louder, parts are softer. This is what's called the "dynamic range."
In order to get a consistent lead vocal, we need to tell the dynamic range "Hey! When it gets too loud can you bring it back down please? To match the same level as the quieter parts?" Enter: COMPRESSION. Let's dive in!
