In this quick video, we're going to be doing a complete vocal warm up for new singers. So if you're new to singing, this will give you everything that you need to get started. But even if you're not new to singing, this is a wonderful way to brush up on your skills.
Donations Welcome - www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted...
What is the best vocal exercise for beginning singers to do to warm up their voice? Well, the answer is simple, but the exercise is not. The answer is anything that trills. So we've got a tongue trill and we've got a lip trill. Now, the reason why these are so foundational, especially amongst those that teach voice and music, is because they are excellent at balancing pressure. I'll say that slow for emphasis. They are excellent at balancing pressure. And that's something that singers across the board, whether they're completely new to singing or they're advanced, is something that we have a tendency to struggle with because we're trying to manage a very sophisticated process.
We want to activate diaphragm. We have to do that when we trail. So let's go ahead and try that right now. You can pick tongue trill if you notice that the lip trail is hard or vice versa. So you can go, I'll be doing the lip troll today. I tend to like that a little bit more. But notice, just watch your diaphragm. When you create that sound, it lifts by default, it lifts as a consequence of that sound that you are making. So it's a beautiful place to start. And the trill itself balances pressure, meaning you will not experience shifts between registration because the pressure will be nice and balanced. Usually when we experience a flip, it's because there's too much or too little pressure going from one register to the next. So you really don't experience that when you trill, which is why it's so foundational to start with. But it also teaches the cords how to concentrate the air flow effectively, sort of spinning it into this beautiful golden thread of sound. They have to work really hard in order to do that.
So let's just try this together. We're going to do just sort of like a bend of air and voice,whether you feel it or not, it's built into the exercise. It's the consequence of the sound. So as you're using movement to keep those sounds going, you're effectively teaching your chords how to create that concentration of air. Makes sound right. So our last bit is that it kind of pours or focuses the air into a nice combination head space I'll just call that tone.

My Vocal warm-up: Upon waking up, lightly hum a few notes near the bottom of my range through my nose (D2-G2). While in my morning shower, play around with the entire second octave (C2-C3) and pop around in the middle of the third octave in Falsetto. MAKE SURE TO TAKE MY DAILY ALLERGY PILL FOR CLEAR SINUSES! On the drive to work, put on music and hum along to the Bass line (an octave higher) occasionally harmonizing with it an octave and a third up. By the second song, start singing the vocal harmonies in Falsetto and lower to middle Head/Mix. Upon third song start, I'm ready to use my full range. (Bb1-A5) The great thing about using this method? For the rest of the day to get back to full range access, all I need to do is hum half a song of Bass line, a quarter of the song in Falsetto, and the rest of the song in Head/Mix.

Well that was an exercise in range that I wasn’t expecting! I had to drop the exercise an octave, but I immediately noticed much better connection with my head voice, which is something that I struggle with. The last C2 - C3 arpeggio was a surprise in that the bottom C2 felt a lot more solid and “grounded.” Great exercise, and terrific explanation of why this is such a bedrock warm-up! Thanks for doing this!

Thank you so much Madeleine. Over the past few years, I've been able to write and sing a few songs, but I've never actually paid proper attention to crafting my voice. I'm already quite comfortable with the way I sound, and people tell me they think I'm good, but I know I'm just beginning, and I'm capable of learning a lot more! Also, I want to look after my voice so I can enjoy it for as long as I can. So as far as I'm concerned, I'm a brand new singer, starting today. Your videos and tutorials provide an excellent starting point, and your energy is so wonderful! I always feel great after watching.

Madeleine, haven’t tuned in for a while. Busy with what-not. But you know there’s so much in every lesson you brilliantly deliver that all needs to be more widely appreciated. Audiences don’t know therefore cannot appreciate what the fine vocalist has mastered to deliver the masterful performance. Your trills for beginners are just mind-bogglingly magical. How do you know all this? There’s no end to it. I heard a professional soprano warming up once. It was an experience of a lifetime. Anyhow. Delighted to be back. Have a bit of catching up to do.

Did I enjoy it? Yes! When I began I struggled to even make the lips vibrate, but closer to the end I realised the link between air flow and chord tension intuitively. It also raised my mood a few notches as I got some bloodflow going. 😂 I feel better mentally after doing that.

I wish I could flutter my lips! Beginner singer here, but oboist, flutter tonguing is easy, but takes more airspeed, air volume and louder, this certainly is a challenge! Maybe I have done too much puckering in my life around that double reed ;-) Will have to practice. Thanks for all you do, I notice your exercises really help loosen up my voice.

I am able to do hissing and other breath control exercises easily and maintain for a long time however I have a lot of trouble quick running out of air with lip trills. The only way I am able to do this exercise is by holding the corners of my mouth. Do you have any ideas how I can improve? I’ve been working at lip trills for a year and a half now and still am struggling. Thank you, I have learned a lot from your videos!

Are we meant to keep it also concisely quiet even the high parts too?? I found it hard to remain with the drills when high but when I made myself louder and stronger it was waaaay easier. Was I supposed to be more quiet? Thank you!! So if this question is dumb!!!

I can't really just push air out of my lips vibrate. If I push air I'm just breathing out through first lips. What I've had to do is make a BBB sound. Can't just breathe and make it happen. Also the exercise makes me gag even if all of me feels relaxed feels like my throat just closes off on its own. None of the industry buzzwords about activating this or spinning threads of that helped me
@ZombiZohm

I don't understand what activate diaphragm means. I don't know how one mechanically, activates a diaphragm. Is the lifting of the diaphragm something that happens automatically when I breathe in and out? Is this one of those mental things that you're supposed to visualize and somehow your body just starts doing it?
