Yeah the kid's chess career got off to a rough start. Probably to this day whenever he's given chess advice from anyone there's a part of him that remembers that experience at least on a subconscious level. And that also goes for him getting advice from anyone on anything.

@@quack420 Hikaru being on another level doesn't mean anything when we are talking about low elo players though. But still he respects Hikaru (or just doesn't want to upset him since Hikaru seems to be like a kind of godfather to his career).
@TechSupportDave
@TechSupportDave 2 жыл бұрын
@@isaacjacob3590 I think what he meant to say is that Hikaru just simply knows better. Hikaru being on another level is actually very relevant here because he most definitely has analysed far deeper into this stuff than Levy, thus Hikaru most likely is aware of far more flaws of the opening that would make it less beginner-friendly. Of course, they are being pretty subjective with this stuff, but it's not a bad idea to listen to people who know Chess 1000000000000000x better than you. Even if their opinions may be biased, based on experience, or mainly based on other subjective things, there is the possibility that not everything they say is. In which case, it's good to at least take into consideration Hikaru's tier list when doing research into what openings you should learn.

I kinda like learning/playing bird's opening as a beginner exercise. Maybe moreso for adult beginners than kids though. Not because it's good. More because it quickly teaches you an important principle about opening arrangements, why most of the best ones are put together the way they are, and how things can go very wrong very fast if the opening itself has a hole. However, when you survive the opening with the bird's you're usually in good shape from then on (at beginner and even intermediate level).

Oh damn you added the dragodorf, thanks guys! I definitely agree with the rating. Most beginners (like me) are struggling to even learn the basic Sicilian lines, so playing such a tricky opening is difficult when you could go for something more direct.

Just the existence of that Four Pawns line makes me never ever play that opening again as black lmao
@zanti4132
@zanti4132 Жыл бұрын
Personally, I think their rating of the Alekhine's is illogical. I mean, the pawn structure out of the opening typically resembles the Caro-Kann, and they give the Caro-Kann high marks for being easy to play. IMO, the Alekhine's is also relatively straightforward - just attack White's advanced pawns, and beginner level opponents will generally end up with what could be described as "not so much a pawn mass as a pawn mess." If your worried about the Four Pawns Attack, it's no big deal, as low level opponents will invariably end up with overextended pawns that are easily picked off later. Besides - and this is an important point - more than 50% of your low-level opponents won't play 2. e5. Either they'll play 2. Nc3 or 2. d3, giving you immediate equality, or they'll hang the e-pawn (2. Nf3, 2. d4, 2. Bc4, etc.) So don't let the comments in this video discourage you from playing the Alekhine's. Heck, the fact that your opponents may regard it as a bad opening is all the more reason to play it.

i showed the catalan to two u1400 players (i was a similar rating) at a tournament -- they had never heard of it before -- and they both won their next game with white using it -- i climbed to 1700 that summer myself -- it's actually super easy to play and get the idea -- even if you lose the c-pawn because you dont know how to recover it, a doubled pawn down is almost insignificant at the beginner level and the rest of the game is often very straightforward for white -- you'll win the cpawn back almost by accident eventually and black trying to hold it becomes complicated for beginners

Beginners tend to just play for the scholar's mate bringing out the bishop and the queen. When they play black, they usually go with e5, Sicilian or french.

@elasiduo108
@elasiduo108 2 жыл бұрын
@@vulcanworf7422 I think these are good opening for beginners, because they allow for a rapid occupation of the center, and development of pieces. Other openings, such as the Sicilian, the King's Indian variants or others, may get very sharp and the center may become an issue if the player is not very energetic. Also, there are a lot of famous games with these ideas.

d4 openings are good for beginners because there is calm play without much calculations. I almost exclusively played d4 as a beginner. My pawn was already protected by the queen and this prevented me from losing it when I forgot to check if it was en prise

28:28 How to counter Danish gambit: Play Bb4+. Now your rook is about to get trapped and taken by the bishop so no matter what move comes next, play Nf6. If they push e5, play d5 to trade the dangerous bishop. If they had played the knight to block the check, play Ne4. Bxf7+ is a move they may play and follow with a queen check. If this happens calmly take the bishop and remember the resource d5! springing your position to life. If they don't play e5, castle short. In some positions you will have to play d5, in some you play d6.

Pretty much the only chess "study" I've done in the last few months is learning the Englund Gambit lines for white where you let the queen check happen. At 1500 bullet, that gets played I'd say as much as 30% of the time (not an exaggeration either, maybe I'm just unlucky): it's unbelievably frustrating knowing how objectively bad it is with proper play, but not having the time to punish it properly.
