I'd probably recommend you turn your computer on for 10 minutes, open up a couple of chrome tabs and heat up that thermal paste. It makes removing the cooler a lot easier. Especially if you haven't removed the cooler in some time, you can rip the cpu right out of the socket. Yes I am speaking from experience 😉

The whole build process is about as easy as this by the way, in case you ever thought maybe building a computer would be beneficial to you. It's just a lot of reading manuals and very carefully slotting things in. Not rocket science. The hardest part is finding what parts you want and that are compatible with eachother. The actual building can be slow and tedious, but I wouldn't call it hard at all.

Top tip for removing an old heat sink. Run the PC up for a few minutes. Then shut it down, and unplug it. The heat sink will pop off easily. The reason is when it is cold the paste sets like concrete. Running the PC for a few minutes heats up the CPU and, hence the paste. It will then be soft and will allow the CPU to be removed a lot more easily. :)

When remove old paste, I use lint-less wipes and alcohol or pure acetone. Then after wipe it clean to remove any residue with a dry, soft lint-less wipe. When you use a cotton swab it can leave tiny fibers on the CPU so you have to wipe it off after cleaning. The same goes for cloth like micro fiber too.

Can you store the thermal paste for later use? How often should you reapply the paste? Thank you!

As long as your temps are fine then there should be nothing to worry about though every 2 years is a good idea. Shelf storage is often 5 years plus.

Omen 15 owner here, thinking of re-pasting, just a question.I got 3 tubes of mx 4 4 years ago, I opened one to use a tiny bit. Does thermal paste go bad? Can I use the remainder of the opened tube?

If its still paste and not dried out then it will be good to go.
