I became a Whiskey drinker in 2021 completely randomly, got into mixed drinks and then quickly transitioned into drinking neat. I had the opportunity to buy a Foursquare ECS Touchstone mark XXII early last year and took a swing at it. It's a blend of a Rum aged for 12 years in ex-Bourbon barrels then almost 3 years in Camus Congac casks. Then it was blended with another Rum aged 5 years in the Ex-bourbon barrels but 9 in the camus congac casks. This intrigued me enough to spend a decent amount on a spirit I have never really dabbled in (except spiced rum, I didn't really count Kraken or Captain Morgan) I do really enjoy that bottle. It has a nice Grape soda note, its 122 proof too and I've never seen a rum that high ABV before and it definitely packs a punch. Very flavorful and smells great. Buying that bottle gave me newfound respect for the spirit I hadn't had previous, as you mentioned at the beginning of the video I had preconceived notions that Rum wasn't as regulated and that had turned me off prior, but wouldn't be opposed now to buying some more rum.

We call everything that's distilled from fermented sugarcane "rum" just like we call everything that's distilled from fermented agave "mezcal". I like the suggestion of calling them "cane spirits"! I'm going to be more mindful about this! Also, great list of rum suggestions!! I have a handful of gateway rums for friends who think that they don't like rum. For example, Privateer (and a few other wood-forward American rums) is a great intro rum for bourbon lovers and clairins (or Puro de Surales) are great for artisanal mezcal drinkers. If I know someone is a peat-head, I'll give them some Hampden haha.

I drank a lot of Captain Morgan in college followed by Sailor Jerry and a few others after graduation. Lately I've been exploring Whiskey but I've been thinking about trying a decent rum to mix it up. I primarily go for Bourbon or Scotch ranging from $20-150/bottle and mostly drink them neat or in an old fashioned. Thanks for the recommendations!

Oh, you poor soul. Now we'll have to give you an exorcism to relieve you of Captain Morgan's fake vanilla and syrupy ghost. I would recommend R.L. Seale 12 year in the funky black bottle. If that's not available in your area, Total Wine offers a 10 year version. And while you're there, pick up a Doorly's 14 year as well. Both are Bajan rum (i.e. from Barbados) and made at perhaps the greatest rum distillery in the world, Foursquare (who Fred Minnick recently quipped was the Pappy van Winkle of rum).

Nice! The one thing I might really want to add, at least in a beginners context, is further attention to Cuba. For better or for worse, it was Cuba's innovations in the first half of the 20th century - aggressive adoption of the Coffey still, charcoal filtration, blending styles, etc. - that have defined the vast majority of rum consumed today, including from the US Territories. They really do deserve the credit and the blame for that. What is often (microaggressively) called "Spanish style" is really basically Cuban style. So yeah! Well done all around, with that one minor protest. I know it's kind of a tough thing to cover when speaking to US consumers, but even there... man, everyone should try Havana Club 3 and 7 at least once, just to know where stuff like Bacardi and Don Q are coming from.
@therumrevival

I still have 2-unopened one liter bottles of Havana Club 7 and half of a one liter bottle of Havana Club 3 year and a full, unopened one as well. Picked them up at the duty fee store in Panama on the way back from a trip me and my wife took to Ecuador (wife is originally from there) in May/June 2022. We were allowed to bring back 5 liters each. Thus, six liter bottles of Havana Club 7 and four liter bottles of Havana Club 3.

Arminder, thank you for your rum channel. Very well put together and informative. I could not agree more about rum classification - describing rums by color is useless. Unfortunately, I did not know that until I got into rum. I also appreciate that you don't insist that a rum is a sipper, or a rum and coke rum or cocktail rum. My son and I taste a lot of rums (it is an enjoyable but expensive hobby/habit), part of the fun is figuring out where the rum will have the best opportunity to shine. There is so much to learn about rum. You made a great point about the St George rum in your 10 favorite rums video. I have many rums that I used to not like, that have grown on me since my palate has evolved through tasting. Still not a huge Agricole fan, but have found a couple that are close to enjoyable - especially in Mai Tai combo. I think next one to try will be Rhum JM terroir volcanique - that looks promising! Keep up the great work.

This is a really great video, thank you for making it! I think the "Rum has no rules" thing really should be "Rum is confusing." The GI rules are obviously not consistent across rum producing countries and usually can't even be enforced in the US. Whiskey like Bourbon and Scotch have specific call outs in federal regulations (in the US) so that anything labeled as those things must actually be those things. Rum doesn't have any specific call outs for types of rum and so it can be hard to be sure what exactly you are getting just by looking at the label. And on top of that Rum is a very diverse category of liquor, all in all it can get confusing, so thank you for making something like this that I can send to my friends to explain.

Great video all around, very informative and the rum recommendations are spot on. The info about where distilleries source their sugar cane from seems to be pretty sparse. How much import do you give to distilleries using sugar cane grown in their home country versus distilleries that have to source sugar from other countries? Total Wine now carries the 43% ABV Doorly's XO. Have you tried it? I'd love to see them up the ABV on the 12-year a bit.
@therumrevival
@therumrevival 5 ай бұрын
Thanks! If we're talking molasses then seems like most distilleries are having to import it in as there isn't enough local production to meet their needs. We are seeing a trend of distilleries growing their own cane and making molasses from it. Both Mount Gay and Foursquare are making efforts in that space. I think its to be applauded as it means they're working with better quality molasses. I didn't know that that XO is now 43%. That's great news. Have to grab a bottle now.

Excellent overview video, very comprehensive for the length of the presentation. Ultimate is a good description. However, why no love for Bacardi? One of the original brands that brought the Spanish style column still to the forefront, they have many good Puerto Rican rums, and some excellent. As alternatives to some you mention I find The Real McCoy brand from the same distillery (Foursquare) as Doorly's to be a better rum at about the same price point for a given age and available in some locations that don't have Doorly's. Their R.L. Seales also makes a great sipper in the price range you mention. As far as availability the same can be said for the ubiquitous Wray & Nephew Jamaican Overproof, which seems to have a wider distribution than Rumbar, or Rum Fire Finally, I find Lemon Hart & Son to be as good as the Hamilton you mention and may be available in areas the Hamilton is not. Thanks for the great vid and a better way to categorize the various rums.

Question: if Rum is just a distilled spirit made from sugar cane, then can rum be made from crystalized cane sugar (by dissolving it back into a syrup?). Fresh-pressed cane juice, gotcha. Cane syrup, gotcha. Molasses (the byproduct leftover after refining sugar), gotcha. But, if you refine the sugar cane into sugar, could you make rum from the sugar in addition to the molasses? Also, I assume that a spirit made from beet sugar would not be considered rum, since it’s not made from sugar cane. But, if refined sugar cane could still be made into something that would qualify as rum, then wouldn’t the line get blurry when it comes to using refined beet sugar? Super curious!
@therumrevival
@therumrevival 22 күн бұрын
Great question! While technically you can make a distilled spirit with crystalized sugar, I wouldn't necessarily call it rum. The reason for that is the table sugar is so refined to the point that it is just pure sucrose. There are no other organic compounds present that are unique to sugarcane. And really its those organic compounds unique to the source material that, in my opinion, that gives that spirit its identity and flavor. It's what separates a rum from say a tequila. When you've stripped it to just sucrose then it might as well as come from any source material... like beets.
@logicalparadox2897
@logicalparadox2897 22 күн бұрын
@@therumrevival Thanks for the reply! That makes sense, in retrospect. I thought about it more and it started to sink in that once you refine the sugar to pure sucrose, it doesn't matter what source material was used to get there--it's now a purified commodity. ... that said... what about unrefined or minimally refined ("raw", or demerara, for example) cane sugar? These still have a lot of the molasses and therefore minerals and other sugars from the source material (cane)... Is it all or nothing (no sugar refined out from cane juice can be used to make something we would call "rum", only molasses or fresh cane juice or cane syrup)? Or is there some fuzzy line where the sugar is "too refined" to call the resulting spirit rum any longer? And do distillers ever add pure cane sugar back into a wash to modulate the fermentation? Apparently brewers use pure maltose syrup in the mash/wort (not sure, I'm not a brewer) for various reasons (mostly to boot ABV without affecting flavor, from the sound of it). Curious if anything like this goes on in rum production and where the lines are, if there are lines at all (and whether or not the lines depend on which regulatory authority the producer finds themselves under). I'm eyeing my copy of Modern Caribbean Rum on the shelf and thinking the answers probably lie in those pages... but I figured I would shoot a follow up here in case others would also find the answers interesting

Protip, Hamilton 151 is the same distillate as 86, you can just dilute it to get the same product but with better price. Barrilito 3 star, king of the Spanish style rums IMO. The giant raisin note is amazing. I hope Arminder gets a bottle of El Amparo soon, it's similar to Clairin Sajous and Vaval but perhaps a bit more refined to my palate.
