It’s time we talked about Rum Brands. There are hundreds of rum brands out there with new ones popping up all the time. Does that mean there are that many distilleries out there? One for each brand? In the early days of my rum journey, I thought that was the case. A brand is owned by a distillery and the rum made by the distillery for that brand is then sold to consumers. Now the reality is that’s there’s a lot more going on with rum brands than just that.
Generally speaking the various rum brands out there fall into one of four different categories. And brands that are owned by a distillery are just one of them. So I’m going to break them all down for you. Because as a rum consumer, I think its one of the biggest level ups you can make to get a good handle on who the players are in the rum world and how they actually work. And how they work, will affect the rum in the bottle, its price, its availability, how its marketed to you and the amount of information they give you about that rum.
