A few choices of my wording may easily be misunderstood so I need to clarify a couple things… 1. Tequila is a recognised Appellation of Origin (AOC) and can only originate from an officially delimited region, which includes 181 municipalities in five Mexican states, being the entire state of Jalisco and specific bordering areas of the surrounding states. Tequila is a town/city and therefore when I mention “region of Tequila” it could be misconstrued as the town/city itself instead of the AOC delimited region. 2. I mentioned that it can be aged. When aged it is often in ex-bourbon barrels. Note that this statement does not state the ex-bourbon barrels are a requirement - they CAN be aged in other oak but it is common to use ex-bourbon due to their prevalence. Anything else you believe should be clarified? Comment below…

Since you ask viewers for their go-to tequila cocktail, I will tell you mine even if it makes me seem unsophisticated. My favorite tequila cocktail is the classic Margarita, made simply with blanco tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice, and simple syrup, and drunk super cold immediately after being poured from the shaker. It's honest and almost pure in its simplicity. Even using agave nectar instead of simple syrup is too fancy for me. And since you're talking about Patron products in this video, I will add that Patron Citronge is a tequila-based orange liqueur that works very well in Margaritas (because the liqueur's tequila base is not detectable as an additional flavor in the Margarita). So go ahead and call me unsophisticated. There's a reason why the Margarita is the most popular mixed drink in the US.
@malloryg42512 жыл бұрын
I love the classic margarita as well, but the traditional version that you mentioned has too much sugar for me. I like to really taste the tequila, as opposed to drowning it out with sugar. I recently switched out the orange liqueur for fresh mandarin juice and used only a drizzle of agave syrup, along with some good reposado and lime juice. It's outstanding!! The agave syrup brings out the beautiful notes of the tequila. Just my opinion, but you might wanna try it : )

It's pretty and tasty. 2 oz Tequila 4 oz Orange juice 1 oz Pineapple juice 1/2 oz Grenadine (let it run down to the bottom to give it a bright red layer at the base) Float about 1/2 oz or so of a Cab or Merlot or red wine of choice to give it a rich red layer at the top. As a gin/whiskey guy trying to get into tequila, it's intimidating. I think a lot of the challenge/intimidation factor is in the sustainability of the product. Additionally, I've been slow to get into it because it's not clear which tequila is made via oven vs autoclave vs diffuser - especially when the quality declines as you move from oven to diffuser - and the diffuser brands (which generally add the 'tequila flavor' back in after distillation) definitely don't advertise the fact. Long diatribe all saying that tequila is hard to get into for a layman that isn't planning on shooting it.

Oh Steve. • You cannot say, the "region of Tequila"! Because Tequila is a city in Jalisco (analogue Cognac is a city in the Charente region in France). You could say, that it is produced in the certified region for tequila production (I know, that I am quite specific here - but people always fuck it up, when they hear things like that). • A smaller mistake: the Agave heart can not only be roasted (autoclaves or brick ovens) but the fermentable juice can also produced in a diffuser (which is basically reserved for the lower grade tequilas - but even cheaper 100% agave tequilas are made like that). • Tequila can be aged in *any* oak barrel. Bourbon barrels are just used, because it is the most abundant oak barrel in the world (due to the fact, that straight American whiskeys have to be aged only in new barrels - hence they cannot be reused as other spirits). • The colors are also not correct. Yes - there are tequilas which are fitting this categorization - but I had often añejos which were medium golden only. And reposados which were very light - on the other side blancos had sometimes a recognizable golden hue. Basically a darker blanco from one brand can be the same color as a lighter colored reposado of another brand. • also I don't really think, that the Old Fashioned method is a great representation of the cocktail! Sorry - the channel is great. But then I am even more critical for issues...
@StevetheBartender_2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback but this is only a brief overview.. (hence Tequila 101) it wasn’t designed to be an in-depth guide to Tequila. I said Tequila is generally aged in ex-bourbon implying that it isn’t required but it is common. Yes, it can be aged in other barrels. References to colours are just a guide but of course it can vary - didn’t think I needed to stipulate but perhaps I should have. What do you think would be a better representation of a cocktail?
@Brad-gc9cq2 жыл бұрын
@@StevetheBartender_ Great video Steve, I think it was more than enough information for a 101 - I don't think there's any need to go into all the exceptions to the general rules in a quick guide like this! Though to be fair to the previous commenter he is correct about Tequila/Jalisco, I think you got your words a little mixed up on that specific point. Tequila is just a town within the Mexican state of Jalisco (which is itself one of the 5 Mexican states with areas allowed to produce Tequila), not a region itself containing the 5 states. But regardless of people (including me!) nitpicking the information, I really like this style of history and overview video, especially for spirits which don't tend to get as much attention like Tequila.
@Dominikmj2 жыл бұрын
@@StevetheBartender_ Well - I think you have one channel which is one of the best channels about bartending with a high educational value. That's why I digress when it comes to "sloppiness" (as said, it doesn't take much longer to say, that barrels have to be oak - and are mostly bourbon). Look - I like your cocktails as well. I think just the Old Fashioned needs to have exactly the right dilution - and personally I could only get great results with two versions: • The classic version: Rub one white sugar cube on an orange (optional) until it picks up orange oils. Saturate the sugar cube into aromatic bitters. Add it then (!) to the glass. Add a minuscule amount of water and crush it and dissolve the sugar cube. Add two nice ice cubes of ice and 20 ml of spirit and stir. Add two more ice cubes of ice and 20 ml of spirit - stir again. Repeat the last procedure (2 ice cubes, 20 ml of spirit). Optional you can strain it then on a new large ice cube or you can serve it just like that. Just spray some orange oils from a twist over the drink and add the twist as garnish. As this takes seriously time, there is a second version - I am exactly noting down the exact target volume (liquids) and sugar (in grams) and find out the ratios (cannot tell you know exactly the ratios). Then I badge the whole cocktail (no ice but just water). I add it to a nice bottle and put it into the freezer. Hence if someone wants to have an Old Fashioned, it doesn't take >5 minutes to prepare - and it is really exactly the same! Oh - other cocktails which are great are for example the El Diablo - however everything homemade (I still like it with homemade ginger ale more than with homemade ginger beer). It works great with a good reposado.
@StevetheBartender_2 жыл бұрын
@@Brad-gc9cq thanks mate, glad you enjoyed the vid! I didn’t get my words mixed up though.. I’m aware of the town of Tequila, state of Jalisco and 5 states that can produce Tequila. When I referred to the region of Tequila I was referring to the region as defined by the AOC as opposed to a geographic region but this could easily be misconstrued and I probably should have structured my sentence in a clearer manner.
