In this video, I demonstrate the process I typically use for truing wheels using a truing stand. I go over the basic tools needed, and the 4 basic aspects of truing a wheel. The 4 aspects or dimensions are: spoke tension, wheel dish, radial runout, and lateral runout. Most methods I see being taught only focus on 1 of these dimensions at a time. My method, in conjunction with a straight and square truing stand, allows all 4 dimensions to be addressed simultaneously. This may sound intimidating, but I've found it's a very easy method to master.
Some of the tools I use:
Park TS 2.2 truing stand amzn.to/2KVk8Ca
DT spoke wrench amzn.to/2ZuBHgu
Park tool spoke tensiometer amzn.to/2HsrZVx
Park tool dishing tool amzn.to/2ZurLDE
I also like to use Tri-Flow lube to lubricate the spoke threads and nipple to rim interface. amzn.to/2NCtp3J

1:27 I have the same stand at my workshop, and I highly recommend you use dishing tool, since the parktool and similarly designed stands do not give consistent results with centering the wheel between the calipers, it always randomly shifts left or right. This is due to the stand construction, the vertical bars have small play (no matter the calibration), and when you tight the knob, it's either the right bar or the left bar that will be off the once set position. So, always double check with the dedicated dishing tool unless you're ok with a deviation over >1.5 mm.

Nice video Joe. I'll be following this closely. Found a nice, used Minoura WORKMAN PRO Bicycle Wheel Truing Stand on Ebay, will be delivered today. With 7 bikes in my collection, I've been thinking about doing my own truing, 14 wheels and 4 spares to maintain, it's time to learn. Been taking out normal wear & tear issues on the bike, but that's a PITA. My main objective is, trying to remove a flat spot, on an old set of tubular wheel, I rebuilt and my LBS trued, before retiring, but after hanging on the wall, I found a small flat had developed. I can feel it, while riding. Don't use those wheel much, but would, if I can get the flat spot removed. Only issue I see with this truing stand, is it only supports 10mm axles. I have 1 set of disc brake wheel, that have a 14mm axle, so need to adapt some how. Question, at about what mileage, should new wheels be checked and adjusted ? I have 4 sets of new wheels, with varying mileage, and just keep an eye on, and adjust as necessary. All my wheels are 700C, road wheels. I'm 72 and don't abuse my bikes, only my old body . Keep up the great work.KB

Hey Ken! Thanks for your feedback and questions. As far as removing the flat spot from the tubular wheel/rim, if it's just from the tension of the spokes that are causing the flat spot in that area, try backing the tension off 1/4 turn from the spokes in that spot and see if that helps. Most flat spots are due to the rim being bent in slightly from hitting a pothole or expansion joint or something in the road. I made a video a few years ago on the process I use with scraps of 2x4's. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/btOVa7l435fboas.html You will need to remove the tire in order to repair the rim if it's bent in. Before you start, you may want to inspect the wheel assembly and make sure the issue is not just the tire. Depending on how old it is and how it was glued onto the rim, tires can deform over time and a poor glue job can be felt while riding as well. As far as the disc wheel with the thru-axle, in a pinch, you can use a long 10mm or 8mm hex wrench running through the hub as a dummy axle to set it into the truing stand. Otherwise, commercial adapters are available. Mileage wise, on bikes we sell at the shop, we'll check them over at 30-60 days. I'd say that would equate to 100-500 miles. If the rider is over 200lbs or carrying lots of weight in a touring type setup, the wheels may need a bit of touching up or tensioning, but the majority of bikes never need to be touched for years as far as wheel truing goes. Now that you have a truing stand, it never hurts to check the wheels just to see. If you have an old wheel that doesn't get used much any more, that would be a good project wheel to practice on. Thanks for taking the time to comment, I appreciate it!

@@JoeyMesa Thank you Joey, for the info. Great idea, yes a 10mm hex wrench should do the trick, on thru axle wheels. Those tubular wheels, date back to the early 80’s. I have one set of tires left, and when they’re gone , that’s it. I took them for a test ride, shortly after they where trued up. Hung them up for the winter, and discovered the following season, there was this flat spot, so I thought . Now that I have a real truing stand, I have discovered it is a hump (rim pulling away from the hub). Maybe 3-4mm, enough , that I can feel it, while riding. So this rear wheel, will be my practice subject. Great diagram , I have never seen it described, keeping the wheel inside the “box”. That is great. My wheels don’t get abused, just normal wear, a little lateral truing is all that is needed. Used to do it on the bike, but now that my fleet has grown to 7, and my LBS retired, time to do it a more professional way. Again, thank you so much your assistance . I’m truly indebted to you. Ken B.

Update: Well, lateral movement is 0.5mm , Wow ! I have manage to get the radial movement , to within 3mm. Somewhere , I read, less than 3mm radial is un-noticeable , correct ??
@kenblair2538
@kenblair2538 4 жыл бұрын
Another update: Finished up that rear tubular, and got the radial to less than 2mm. Went on a short ride, nice, no more "thump-thump-thump". However, there is a small rise in the tire (new 2yrs) , but doesn't effect ride quality. Hopefully, this wheel will stay tru, until I wear out the tire. And the 10mm hex key, worked great on a thru axle.

Nice! It's pretty rare for a tubular tire to be completely straight. Some are definitely pretty out of round, but it's hard to feel it when riding. Good job with the wheel truing and thank you for all your feedback!

Cheers mate. I need to learn to do wheels. Can fix most everything else. Just recently there's been so many more folk cycling where I am that repair shops wait times are massive.
@JoeyMesa
@JoeyMesa 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, there seems to be a bike boom going on worldwide! The wait times have improved at the shop I manage. Hiring more mechanics helped, but trying to get replacement parts seems like the biggest problem right now. I've got a KZfaq playlist dedicated to wheel building, truing, and repair that you may find helpful. I've recently added some new videos to the playlist, and another on tension and truing on a wheel that was just laced up that should be up later today. Thank you very much! When i was a kid we would get frustrated trying to true the wheel with vise grips clamp to the fork. Back then we couldn't afford a truing stand. What affordable truing stand would you recommend Parktool is expensive.

In your opinion, what's a good paved and gravel 700c tire? Size and brand. Thanks
@JoeyMesa
@JoeyMesa 4 жыл бұрын
Well, so far, I haven't tried a whole lot of gravel specific tires. I didn't really get into riding a lot on gravel until a little over a year ago. I think a lot of factors will depend on what makes a specific tire good. The gravel and dirt in Oklahoma are a lot different than the dirt and gravel in Colorado, and I'm sure it probably varies quite a bit wherever you go. I ride at least a little gravel on my commute daily, but it can be as much as 60% pavement and 40% gravel. The smoothest and fastest I've used are Bontrager AW (all weather) series tires. Traction isn't great in the corners at all, but for my particular commute, probably the most efficient tire . I've got 700 x 32's on my commuter bike now. I 've also tried a Teravail Cannonball in 700x 42 that I really liked. Very smooth in the center with shorter side knobs. It's better traction wise than a pure road tire, but still really smooth on pavement. I also tried a 700x 40 Maxxis Rambler a while back and that's what came stock on my Pivot Vault. So far, those are the best tires I've used in the gravel around here and they're decent on pavement. The only downfall in those is if you ride a lot on pavement, they tend to wear down pretty fast Thanks for your question!

Is it necessary to get one of those truing stands with gauges on it in order to get a perfect rounded wheel? Is it possible to re-true a wheel the way it came from the factory? (in terms of roundness of no lateral movement)
@ericskougstad620
@ericskougstad620 2 жыл бұрын
The truing stands with gauges are really for professional riders. Without the gauges, the stand can get the wheel straight enough for the recreational cyclist.

You're welcome! I made a couple of wheel building videos a few years ago, but they weren't very complete. Plus I've changed my method a bit with most of the wheels these days having a disc brake, so I'll post up a current wheel building video soon. Thanks for taking the time to comment and your request!

@Joey Mesa thankyou so much for the Park truing stand calibration video, I'm sure it will help me considerably. Can you also please recommend a good park truing stand truing video, as I have probably tried trying to true my racer bicycle wheel which is slightly untrue for about 10 hours so far and I have not made it even slightly truer yet, only worse, it's not as easy as I thought it was, can you please tell me how long it took you before you got the knack at truing wheels please so I can get an idea how long I'm going to have to play around truing my wheel. Thankyou so much.

Any differences working with carbon rims?
@JoeyMesa
@JoeyMesa 4 жыл бұрын
Not really. In some cases, they're actually easier because they don't dent or get flat spots the same way aluminum rims can. However, they can crack where an aluminum rim will dent and can sometimes be repaired, whereas the carbon rim will generally need to be replaced, which can be expensive. Unless the carbon rim has internal spoke nipples (like on ENVE rims) or uses small washers between the nipple and the rim (like ZIPP rims), the building and truing process is virtually the same. Thanks for your comment and question!

Thanks but there is far too much waffling around. Suppose suppose suppose. You need to redo this and organize it by cases: case 1 wheel is gitting low and to the left, case 2: wheel is low and hitting to right, case 3: etc etc. I know it's hard to organize but it is worth the effort.
