Beginners watercolour lesson. How to draw and paint a lamb. Painting on 140lb Fabriano cold pressed watercolour paper. Painted using Winsor and Newton Artist quality watercolour paint.

I just finished painting this lamb! You gave excellent instructions, and I am really pleased with the end result. As it is currently Lent, I wanted to paint a lamb for Easter. I am looking forward to trying your other projects. Many thanks.

So happy I selected this particular lamb and this particular artist to follow! Usually my first attempts are rather rough and ugly, but because you took the time to give us a full presentation and many details, my first effort at this lamb is successful and actually something I will give to a friend for Easter. Thank you for the tutorial. One question though. When you were making the painted area lighter. Does it have to be wet or can it be done to dried area as well?

Thanks for watching Sara. Yes, you can remove watercolour when it's dry, I show this towards the end of the video. Some colours are easier to lift than others, red is difficult as it tends to dye the paper. It also depends on how good your paper is. I would recommend a synthetic brush rather than a softer sable. Enjoy your painting 😀

This is exactly the tutorial I needed. However my grand daughter wants a black lamb. How does one draw/paint a black lamb. I have tried somewhat unsuccessfully.

Hi Stephanie, thanks for watching. The problem with painting black animals is that we assume the whole thing is black and loose definition in tone and form. Black is rarely black, find a clear photo of a black lamb and look very carefully at the full range of colours you can actually see. There will be a full range, some very light highlights, areas of tan etc. I don't use black paint, I would recommend you try mixing French Ultramarine with Burnt Sienna. Test your colours on a scrap piece of paper before painting your lamb.
