The American Doberman is very different from the European Doberman in many key ways. One of the most important differences is in how these two dogs behave. This video will break down the results of an exciting research study Doberman Planet conducted into how the American and European Dobermans behave differently from one another on a day-to-day basis. This brand-new information should help you decide once and for all which of these two Dobermans are a better fit for you and your home.

@@DobermanPlanet I have had both raised and train both and I have to disagree on alot you have said the European are very well in tune with his owner the American Dobie is in tune with everyone the European only his owner and the owners family will not leave your side either the only difference really is the American Dobie was breed down to make it more friendly with everyone. The American Dobie is a great watch dog but they will watch a thief carry your valuable's off but if your at home they will let you know someone is out there and they will be behind you all the way. But you take the European DOBERMAN they will hold that thief there until you get back home or he will leave with serious engeries but your stuff will still be there when you get back. American Doberman will say I see you and I'm letting you know but I'm not going to do anything about because that's the way I was breed. But both are very smart the European you want to socialize alot more the American you want have to as much they may bark at someone that comes to your door but then they will want them to pet them. I'm working with a German shepherd right now and she is a European shepherd she will not leave my side just like my Euro Dobie's would do and my American Dobie's would stick to my side. It is the same way with the American shepherd and the European shepherd the Euro it will fight to the death for you but the American Dobie and shepherd will say I will be right back I will go and try to find you some help...lol

I have had one each. The European was definitely bigger even though she was a girl. I found that the breeders made all the difference. My European came from a breeder who had beautiful dogs but he did not socialize them. The breeder of our American had beautiful dogs but she socialized them from day one. We socialized both dogs relatively the same. I am convinced that it is the breeder and socialization that makes the most difference. I am sure Temperament DNA has some influence as well. Keep any dog well exercised!!! I loved both dogs and would take just about any Dobe when push comes to shove.

Love hearing your experience with the two different types, Suzanne! You're definitely right in the fact that choosing a breeder makes all the difference. Temperament and exercise are also super important! So many things go into making a great, well-rounded Doberman!

@@DobermanPlanet Ok, folks, you have to understand that cropping is forbidden in almost all european countries. Fully cropped Dobermanns from Europe all come from eastern Europe like Bosnia, Serbia, Ucraine or Russia - they are on the edge of being qualified to be part of Europe since they're sh*t countries... They raise their pups like factories - I think you call it "puppy mills". You can't get a cropped dobie from Germany or any other western european country. Some kennels in Bosnia, Sawages, raise their pups in a garage for export. No socialisation whatsoever. In my country, many of these dogs are euthanized after dogs biting children, their owner etc. Same with a huge kennel in Serbia who exports all over the world. Many incidents... Top notch working lines are german, but they all have floppy ears and long tail. @Doberman Planet - please remove the european union and german flags from your thumbnail since cropping is forbidden within the european union. Call it "slavic states Dobermann" or something...

I see the appeal but I love how majestic and stately Americans look, they look like they could be flanking the queens throne when they sit with their ears up. I see the appeal of wanting a more robust dog though.

I have had them both, if you want one just for a pet get a American Dobie if you want one for a big pet but at the same time one for protection get you a European. The American Dobie was breed down to just be a big pet but the European blood line is breed to do what it was met to do protect his owner and his family the Euro has that old blood line in them and with good health back ground checks and took good care of will out live the American blood line.

These scales are very accurate. I’ve been fortunate to have one of each. My American Dobergirl would sprint once and sleep all day, but my European needs 20 minutes of vigorous physical/mental exercise every 2-4 hours, all day, to unlock the floppy cuddle machine achievement.

One thing I noticed over the years with working with dobermans is when training a American you have a short 15 20 minute window before they turn the script on you and start to work you, where the Euros I have worked with had a longer training window closer to 30 mins. I train for ACK obedience and AKC CGCA my first Dobie I took to the OM level but wow that was a lot of hard work. I'm a Single male and I prefer female dobies in general. THe best way I describe a my American dobies is the term "Velcro Dog", they will stick to my side no matter what, my euros seem to be a bit more outgoing. Great vid and keep up the great work with Doberman Planet.

Both are very smart Dogs but I was working my Euro's on personal protection and this lady was watching so she went out and bought a American Dobie. It was the hardest thing I ever did to build that dog confidence up and still it would act like he was going to eat you up but if you stomped your foot and ran torge him he would run in behind the owner. But you wouldn't want to do a Euro like that or you will get eaten...lol but both are very smart. I my self have worked with these Dogs for years got my first one back in 1974 when they where all Euro blood lines my first one came out of Germany. I have all the respect in the world for both the American and European.

This was the best video ever!!!!! It goes into so much detail and I am getting a full 100% Doberman in March/April. I have seen other videos on this however this was the best!!! I know it depends on the drive etc There is a test I believe it is called the Volhard test where you can test puppies on different categories to match the puppy with the correct owner but in general this was so good!!!! Thank you very much! As far as a male or a female I tend to like males better but that could just be that I have had both and the male was more loyal. I think it is the personality of the dog. I did see that the female in my experience was more in tune with me until we got the male after 2 1/2 years. The male was great with the whole family but favored me or my husband. Me when he was not there. When we both were not there he did not sleep in my daughters room however checked in on her then went to our bed. Female was to herself sometimes. he was the Alpha.

Thanks so much for this info. I’m looking for a Doberman in the Spring of 2022. I thought I wanted a European, they are smaller. After watching this, I definitely want an American. I had a Shepkita (German Shepherd/Akita) He was the best dog, I loved him very much. He loved me too. He was stuck to my side everywhere I went. However, he had 110 pounds of stubbornness. My husband and son had the heavy hand. Me…well…I left Maximillion do as he pleased. 😬 He’d growl at me if I wanted to go to bed and he was on it. Ok…I’ll sleep on the couch. Husband and son…Get off, and he did! 😳 No growling. I lost both my husband and Max within 6 months of each other. I want to start afresh. No heavy handed training. No amping up the protective side of the dog. I’m thinking with my son I will do this. Thanks again!

I just got a red American female Doberman. She is VERY smart! She has a really good temperament and seems to like all of us in the family. She does seem to be a bit more bonded to me and my hubby is a close second, which makes sense. I am with her all day and she is often on her bed at my feet. We set her between us at night when watching TV and most of the time she cuddles up next to me and then sometimes she goes and cuddles with my hubby, sometimes going back and forth. I do 99% of her feedings and to most of her training. Hubby and I do equal amounts of playing with her, and hubby does most of her walks with her, puts her to bed at night in her crate and pets her to sleep. He also gets up to take her out in the middle of the night and first thing in the morning. She goes everywhere with us and has never been left home alone in the 6 weeks we have had her. She doesn't seem to have any real fears and doesn't seem to get scared, but she doesn't care too much for being in water. She likes 2 of our cats, but not my sons GF's cat who we call a demon! That cat is mean and my dog barks at him ferociously! She is friendly to other people and dogs, but will act accordingly to how another dog is. Only twice when in our yard on her long leash did she begin barking at someone walking too close, but she will clam down when I tell her it's ok, but she stands guard just in case. She is a really good dog! I have never let her off leash, only in the house. Even in the house she has a leash on mainly to control her better with the cats. We take it off at play time, TV time and bedtime inside. Just thought I would share my Dobie experience! Love your study! If I get another one, I might try a traditional color European male. I like the American female for their elegant look and the European male for their strong look.

Dummkopf...

Hes absolutely amazing and is already super attached to me. Havent started training him yet tho. Hes a european. And as for off leash its also law. Dobermann arent super common in europe as they are in the usa so the off leash and muzzles laws differ.

I have worked and have raised Dobermans for years. The American Doberman is more for the show ring but if your wanting one for protection you better get the European but both breeds are very very smart and all a Doberman wants to do is please his master, I think they are the smartest Dog breed there is. Very easy to train a first time Dog owner could train them there self.

Hi love all your videos. I have some questions.I just acquired a Rescue American Doberman and Veterinarian says he is about 2 years.I have two other mix breed Rescue dogs. And Doberman does fine with one dog .He wants to fight the other dog badly.I think he could really hurt the other dog. The Doberman was definitely not socialize very well .He is very reactive to other dogs barking while walking. To us he very sweet but high energy. I don't know anything about his background . We walk him 3 miles a day and I am trying to teach him to fetch. I am using his your videos. Doberman seems very scared in different settings sometimes. What kind of collar should I get the Doberman and should I get dog trainer to come to our home or Send the Doberman away for two weeks to a K9 boot camp? Please Advise Thank you so much.

Our little boy is of European bloodline ( so we are told) we got him from a breeder. So far I think he is European because his paws are huge at 9 weeks old. Anyway, it’s been about 1 week and a half and he is very intelligent, willing to please, but I do have to say, not great around small kids, I have a 2 year old and 6 year old and they basically running chew toys for him. He doesn’t really nip or bite me because I’ve trained him not too, then praise him and re direct him to an actual chew toy. He’s made great strides in that category towards me; but my kids? Not so much, I have to be there like a hawk. I’m really scared that one day I’ll leave him for a few seconds and our little hades might playfully hurt him, he’s already left minor marks around his calves and made him cry once or twice. Anybody have any tips? It would be much appreciated!

I have a half European half American female. She is 15 months old. She looks more European in stature, weight and coloring. She is calming down to some extent but she is definitely a one person dog. She’s weary of strangers but can warm up to people. I never have her off leash and she does wander while checking in on me. She is in between on the training as well. Positive works sometimes and sometimes it doesn’t. She is hyper sensitive to my emotions and I have her trained to put deep pressure on me and get on my lap if I’m triggered from ptsd. This video def makes sense haha.

The main thing is a back ground health check on the breeders Dobie's . That goes for the European blood line too, Beleave me that should be your main concern. I wouldn't want anyone to get a Doberman and it dies on you in just four years and there is alot of breeders out hear that there Dobie's have some bad health problems. And a good breeder only has two colors black and tan or red and tan if they have pups that are blue or fawn colors you better find another breeder that will be a big sign of health problems.

Most of that video was what I'd have expected, but those last couple categories made me think they were more reflective of people who took on "too much dog" for them than the actual inherent qualities of the breed strain. It doesn't make sense to me that the purpose-bred working line would be less in tune with their owners or more prone to just leave them (a quality that, in an adult dog, smells a lot like training deficit). However, I have seen a few European Dobermann owners who wouldn't let their dogs off leash simply because they had almost no control over them (aka who had no business getting a serious working dog in the first place). I wonder if some respondents didn't interpret "in tune" to mean "constantly checking in on me visually," which is something I'd associate more with the Americans, but isn't necessarily a good barometer of how tuned in the dog is in the sense of how well the dog can and does read you and if/how they alter their own behavior accordingly.

100% agree with your observations. The Euro Dobes, quite frankly, have a much stronger drive & work ethic. If you're wanting to go into IPO/Schutzhund, the Euro Dobe is the way to go. The American Dobes are more geared for show, and imo, they're lacking greatly in the drive/work ethic needed for IPO. I have had both and can tell you from experience that my American dobes failed (big time) in the IPO training whereas my Euro Dobes fell flat in the American show ring. I am about to get an Am/Euro cross puppy in 3 weeks. I am excited to see how this guy comes up in the world. I do a lot of my own training and am eager to see what comes of this puppy.
