As someone who also has adhd, use headphones and do other tasks. it works great! Basically behavioral methods of adhd treatment have been tossed aside due to questionable scientific studies wrongly framing them as ineffective. The speaker here says that its not true and that adhd CAN be treated without medication, and recommends a strategy like this: test and examine the person for other issues like anxiety to make sure they actually have adhd. If so, test behavioral treatments and monitor their success with parents and teachers reporting how the child is doing. If there is little no success with those treatments, THEN use stimulant medication. He called this a “safety first” method and the point is to avoid wrong diagnosis of adhd and over prescription that they might not need. Hope this helps!

Oh and he also recommends parents get a little bit of training for helping their child with adhd, which is ideal if they don’t mind the extra effort.

If you're looking for practical advice you aren't going to find it in the video but maybe my advice will help and a lot of it came from reading real research papers published in peer reviewed journals. TLDR; Get more sleep. Take notes. Use To-Do Lists. Dedicated study/work places. Exercise. Learn to say no. - Get more sleep. The research on the effects of sleep deprivation is shocking. It's hard enough to focus on anything already and being sleep deprived makes it far more difficult. For me this required some self-discipline and benadryl and/or melatonin. - Have dedicated places where you go to study, work, play, etc.. This is one not supported by research but personal experience. It was incredibly helpful to have special places to study, work, relax, etc.. In college there were certain locations I always went to if I needed to study, and other places when I needed to get work done. - Notes. I hate taking because I am slow and it was usually just a big distraction. However, it got easier with practice and has been a big help. - ToDo Lists. This is still a work in progress but I try to maintain multiple lists such as one for work, personal, side hustle, etc.. I rarely do everything but having them I least attempt most of them which puts me way ahead. - Exercise. This is another one that is backed by good research. I read one study awhile back that showed that 1 hour of exercise before a test had almost the same effect as medicine. - Learn to say no. There are numerous books that talk about the importance of saying no to focus on more important things. This means learning to say no to starting new projects, no playing with your phone when you need to go to bed, etc.. Last, you have to be your worst critic and best cheerleader...unsuccessful people do just one but you have to do both. This means carefully examining your life and looking for ways to improve.

As you said this is felt everwhere. I was diagnosed in my 30s and medication was my only 'therapy'. I asked for CBT and was told there isn't any & the lists and planners I was already doing were the only suggestions. There are 0 adhd psycs in my area and I live in a large city. Even online there are plenty of symptom checks but little to no tools.

I think adhd coaches may be the best option but i don't think they're covered by insurance and they ain't cheap. Almost any psych you go to is going to steer everything toward emotional stuff even if you're like "if I'm late one more time I'm going to get fired (and not have health insurance so I wouldn't be able to come here anymore). I need to figure out how to get to work on time." They're like "i can see how that could make someone anxious. I'd like you to practice this deep breathing exercise" ....

Like i tried to get in touch with peers and whatnot since docs wouldn't help, but honestly if you go to adhd forums, most of the people are there because they need help too. Like there are a million new threads a day and no one has the attention span to even read a whole post. I've learned stuff on forums but it's mostly "don't bother with that because it doesn't work" and demographic info like "a huge percentage of us are substance abusers" plus some info on stimulant side effects and dosage which really has been helpful. But that's mostly it.

A child to be made to sit at a table for hours on end, at a school room desk , is not a healthy environment , should not be expected or encouraged. Exercise a couple of minutes per hour is natural , healthy and elevates 90% of the behavioral problems. This exercise period is an obvious proper care of the health of a child. The exercise inducing the proper chemical makeup of the brain ; (Endorphins ,chemical balance of receptor / transmitters etc .) and of the whole body. Although ADHD may be seen as physiological disorders ; A large percentage of ADHD are disorders of the Brain not the Mind and so the health and regulation of the Physical Brain is at the root of the problem. Rather than this being a common physiological disorder 20%; It is commonly a behavioral disorder "Perpetrated upon the child.".... (Much more common than the "Testing " determines.) Parents should also be aware of the foods that contribute to Hyperactivity. Fruity loops with Milk and sugar, given to a normal healthy child ,as breakfast; will result in behavior mimicking that of classic ADHD.

Yes! There are many problems with how this is dealt with! Clinicians seem to be looking for problems & try to create artificial problem situations to get reactions from their patients which is just manipulation... It feels awful and all they do is try to provoke me & I end up leaving! This is mostly in Psychiatry or Psychologists that give out meds... I get more help from family counselors who don't vilify me & try to medicate me. But I'm an adult & this seems like it's more for kids.. Been there.. They should have never medicated me so young! It wasn't fair & I"m pissed off about it! That doctor was trying to get up my mom's skirt... But many of them seem to be in the field for the wrong reasons in my opinion...

He is shying away from giving you the actual tips, because he knows the (inadequate) reaction of paretns of "ADHD" children to any suggestions of effective measures. Ask yourself - for you not to speed on a motorway - what stops you? You are just always good? or a road policeman's fine and points on your license are a deterrent? What is there is your palette of measures that seriously scares your child - enough to stop the behaviour that he prefers and that he accustomed himself to? Would you never speed if policemen just slightly raised their voices at you and told you not to speed (not fine, no points)? In reality - ADHD children grow in families where adults are afraid to scare theri child into not doing something. Just list your "parental weapon" list and look at it - would your child pay attention to this? Would a proper hooligan be deterred by your list? That's why your parenting measures don't work - they are wrong and ineffective. You want effective ones? Tell us about your child, what exactly you need to correct, and I will come back with exact things to do - and you will never need medication.

I agree with the methodology mistake as described but i do not nessesarily agree that behaviour treatment works so far only medicaiton treatments and only dosed perfectly (almost never done). Use AI/machine lerning/chatGPT to crawl adhd medicaiton or behaviour treatment logs to find corrolations and so on (bascially evolve and be a human and use a computer pls) (also look for misaligned insentives (stress vs patient) (low money vs other stuff more money) (more money if treatment works?) (what metrics are used?) (do the people police/rate themselfes?) (public anti med anti adhd pro therapy pro natural fallacy bias big) (anti adhd misunderstandings / beleives very strong because people told to shut up and communication bad and lyers have been around noone trusts anymore)

There seems to be massive pro therapy / natural fallacy bias (inside of me when i was 12) and int he population also could be bad methodology. I heared both sides swear against and for. So pls like what adhd model did you use? just attention and hyperactive and nothign else ? like how annoying and fidgety they are? (not good enoght subsurface) i agree on the testing outcomes afer behaviour treatments stoped and varrying behavior dosage. But also you should controll or put scam/fake behaviour treatments that play into biases of people but are not what works (have to say what it is because if you choose a obviouly fake /bad one it wont work as a placebo) also dubble blind not possible so problematic still get at least independant evaluators and differetn evaluators and check for contracdictory evaluations. people easily impressed get coimputers in there show longterm outcomes use barkley borwns execuztuve funcitons / subcontious stuff / motivation / drive / enjoying things (not selfreport but actually how much do you do for X how much discomfort ETC)
