From the Open Your Heart in Paradise Retreat in 2018, Joseph Goldstein covers the methodology of mindfulness, answering three key questions about the nature of mindfulness.
The Methodology of Mindfulness
Joseph begins with a short meditation practice as a foundation for his dharma talk on the methodology of mindfulness. This particular practice is one of relaxing into the flow of change taking place all around us.
“When we’re not distracted, when we’re simply being present, it’s a completely effortless awareness.” - Joseph Goldstein
(16:45) What is Mindfulness?
Joseph starts his discourse on mindfulness by answering the first of three key questions: what is mindfulness, and what isn’t it? There are many misconceptions about mindfulness, especially in the spiritual community. Joseph talks about how there’s much more to mindfulness than simply being in the moment.
“Mindfulness just creates that open space in which all phenomena arise; sometimes pleasant, sometimes unpleasant, but we stay in that openness.” - Joseph Goldstein
(29:25) What Do We Learn from Being Mindful?
What is the wisdom that comes from being mindful? Joseph explores how when we’re mindful, we can begin to see the true nature of change. He talks about how the feeling of inner struggle is actually feedback in our lives, not some problem to be solved.
“There’s often a big gap between what we know conceptually and how we’re living our lives. And the transformative power of practicing mindfulness as a methodology for seeing the momentary change, it’s only when we are living that experience moment to moment, that’s what affects the liberating quality of that wisdom.” - Joseph Goldstein
(46:00) What Role Does Mindfulness Play In the Development of Compassion?
Joseph explores how mindfulness can be a gateway to compassion. He talks about how compassion is more than just empathy, it’s an open-hearted response to suffering. The obstacle is that our minds are conditioned to avoid suffering at all costs.
“Mindfulness allows us to come close to suffering without pulling back from it out of aversion. We’re willing to be with the suffering… And as we open to it, that’s what allows for the compassionate response to happen.” - Joseph Goldstein

So nice to watch Joseph up close as he speaks. He does not know me from Adam, but I spend an hour every day listening to his lectures and talks. I am sure he has touched so many lives just as he has touched mine. Thank you, Joseph.

Notes - 1. As simple and easy as moving hand 2. Half smile 3. Mindfulness definition - be here now --> aware about awareness --> through a deconditioned filter 4. It's okay to feel unpleasant 5. Benefit - Whatever has the nature to arise in our experience, will also pass away (non-grasping mind) 6. Struggle can sometimes be a 'feedback'. 7. Experiencing, not just intellectually, to see that everything is changing. 8. Compassion is the response to suffering. Minds are conditioned to avoid suffering.

A trick I learned from I think Joel Goldstein popular metaphysics teacher. In our minds we automatically mentally move away from pain and struggle. When these feelings occur during meditation instead of moving away which is the instinct response. Instead try to move toward and try to focus on the very center of that uncomfortable, undesirable pain or feeling. I've found it works well with headaches and migraines.

I've listened to many of Mr Goldstein's talks now and I must be missing something. It sounds like he's just stating the plainfully obvious and telling you to be mindful of it. Im reading his book Mindfulness and it's all just a lot of that. It would seem that the path to Nibanna, which he mentions many times, is through plain dualistic observation.

hey raul. I understand that you feel something's missing. However, most transformative insights are often so simple & elegant. I think you at least believe in the theory. Wish you the best for more practice :)

@@eastik_in I absolutely do believe in the theory. Unfortunately I seem to have hit a road block in my practice that Im working through. Im reading Dianna Winston's, 'The Little Book on Being' and it has been very helpful.

Hey Raul - FWIW, I had the same feeling about Buddhist literature in general until I got serious about my practice. It hits differently now, when I feel like I’m making a sincere, genuine attempt to live by the teachings (versus a sort of scattered, inconsistent approach before). It’s like a radio station I’m now tuned into. I doubt that’s helpful, but just wanted to let you know that I shared your feeling at one time.

It’s of significance in my experience to have a personal, 1 x 1 teacher. Obstacles are the path. They only appear as obstacles. ❤️

@@eastik_in Find a teacher that teaches the eightfold path, not one that teaches from reading about it, but one who has realised the path. Very difficult to find this kind of teacher in our lifetime. I know of one here in Australia, he's a monk from Burma. Mr Goldstein is just trying to help people, he is putting it in words only as a pointer, you must do the work for your self, as I must do for me. :)
