Joseph examines ill will and wrong view as some of the common unskillful actions of mind that tend to enable and perpetuate much of the suffering we experience.
All of the expressions of these qualities are conditioned responses to what we find unpleasant, arising in situations where we don’t get what we want, or do get what we don’t want. The strength of our mindfulness is what determines how long we remain consumed by our aversions. Our practice must therefore include the willingness to open equally to the pleasant and unpleasant aspects of our lives.

One of the things I love most about the teaching of the Buddha is their SIMPLICITY! for example: unpleasant feeling --> ill will, pleasant feeling --> grasping. Wrong view is the biggest source of suffering. There is no underlying "I" or "self" behind all of these experiences to whom they're happening. May we all free ourselves from the habit of wrong view! Sadhu, sadhu, sadhu!

35:10 : "one of the most challenging of all the Buddhist teachings is that 100 percent of our suffering comes from our unskillful states of mind." As a compassionate human being, I fully and with all my heart reject this 'teaching'. In fact, ideas like this, more than helping reduce suffering in the world, increase suffering. Certainly, for anyone over the age of 18, it becomes increasingly apparent that some of our sadness and anxiety does indeed reside in our attitudes regarding certain realities of the social world. But the idea that our thoughts are behind our suffering is just a relative, situation-specific truth. The generalization of this observation has its limits. For example, the victims of the Holocaust - many of whom were young children - certainly did not suffer, and ultimately end their little lives, as a result of their 'attitudes' - and to suggest this is nothing short of monstrous. As a jewish person, living in Germany, I have seen this belief echoing from the mouths of certain adherents of the far right. The idea that "the jews brought it on themselves", is a perfectly valid stance among this element. To believe that we are 100 percent responsible for our suffering is NOT the way to bring about an end to suffering - in fact, it's the way to maintain and intensify the suffering in the world.
