CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The Serbs attempt to shoot down Chris (Owen Wilson) and Stackhouse's (Gabriel Macht) jets because they've flown over a mass grave.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A television commercial for a Sega game system that aired during the 1999 MTV Music Video Awards landed debut director John Moore a gig behind the camera of this military action thriller. Owen Wilson stars as Lt. Chris Burnett, a naval aviator aboard the U.S.S. Carl Vinson who's frustrated with the strict "hands-off" political policies that prevent him from experiencing combat against hostile Bosnian forces in his F/A-18 Superhornet jet. Burnett's commander, Admiral Reigert (Gene Hackman), thinks that the brash pilot doesn't have what it takes to be in the millitary, but the eager young officer soon gets the chance to prove his mettle. While conducting a routine photographic reconnaissance over a remote area of the Balkans, Burnett captures grisly images that serve as proof of genocidal crimes, but his plane is blown out of the sky. He's soon pursued on the ground by the forces of Lokar (Olek Krupa), a Serbian paramilitary leader intent on covering up unthinkable crimes, while Reigert defies the NATO orders of his superior (Joaquim de Almeida) and risks his career to mount a covert rescue mission. Behind Enemy Lines (2001), the first of two back-to-back releases starring Wilson and Hackman (the other being The Royal Tenenbaums), also stars David Keith, Gabriel Macht, and Charles Malik Whitfield.

Daniel Taylor Missiles must definitely follow you around. Which is why pulling high G maneuvers can break off the seeking missiles if said missile cannot sustain such G force. Some missiles have an effective range of up to 9k nautical miles. Whats unrealistic is how slow the missiles were compared to the aircraft in this scene. The missiles should of intercepted the aircraft within seconds of being fired.

I saw this movie in the theater in Montana when it came out: 1:15 - That "CLANG!" from the fuel-tank hitting the ice remains one of my favorite immersion-scenes ever. It punctuates an otherwise "whoosh-heavy" scene. There is an acoustic pause and a sudden "CLANG!". It is perfectly timed.

This is a SAM which means they have more fuel to burn than a2a missiles since they have to travel upwards as opposed to being fired from a platform that already has high velocity. The problem isnt the tracking time, it's that the missile is making high g turns to keep up with the plane and that's not very likely

The chase is dumb and unnecessary hollywood BS tho.. They could make it so they evade 2 missiles (since its easy to lose them over a hill when flying so low) and then make some AAA to score hits on them which would limit control of their aircraft, and then have the third missile to finish the job.. This way it would A) still be a very tense scene if made properly and B) you wouldnt have half of the audience wondering how are missiles so slow, with so much fuel, and with such a great maneuverability and tracking.. It seems the older I get the more I am hating on some of the unlogical artificial BS the hollywood is pulling off, tho at least they balance it out with insane looking shots I have to give them that

The film is based loosely on the experiences of USAF Capt. Scott O'Grady, who was shot down near the town of Mrkonjic Grad in northern Bosnia in June 1995 and was stranded in Serb-held territory for six days before being rescued by US Marines. O'Grady brought a lawsuit against 20th Century-Fox for damages to his character. He claims he didn't curse as much and never disobeyed orders

The detonation was realistic thought as most missile warheads use a fragmentation head

That was a Strela vehicle launching a Neva S missile which turns into a Buk missile for the final explosion sequence. Oh and none of the missiles flew properly, that airplane was sub mach while the missiles move at mach 2.5-4. So no, the sequence wasn't a realistic representation of fighter escaping SAM. Here is how a fighter evades a radar surface to air missile - First second of evasion - "Oh shit our Radar Warning Receiver says someone is pointing a radar at us!" - Second second of evasion - /Drops *chaff* (not flares) - Third second of evasion- /Chaff ineffective 82% of the time - Fourth second of evasion - /Impact - Fifth second of evasion - /Eject Here is how a fighter evades an infrared surface to air missile - First second of evasion - "Oh shit our Missile Approach Warning says a missile is behind us!" - Second second of evasion - /Impact - Third second of evasion - /Eject Boring right? At least from a hollywood perspective, there's not much air time. Infrared missiles are rarely detected in time to drop flares (or fuel tanks lol), they're usually dropped *before* a missile is detected, really the moment the pilot thinks he's entered the range of a launcher. Even then the success ratio is low for multi color seekers. The real way missiles are countered is by flying out of their range and dropping glide bombs with obscene glide ratios on top of SAM trucks that carry the missiles, and hope the bombs aren't shot down by a lucky SPAAG.

The only problem with this scene, rockets and SAMs fly in straight lines only. They don’t bob and weave, cut corners, etc.

Not sure if this is true but I was reading somewhere where Scott 'Grady was shot shot down in his F-16C by the serbs that the guy that fired the SAM blind fired it and switched his radar off after it locked up on the plane if so that is impressive!!

It wouldn't surprise me as the rwr systems on these planes is going to give you away, so to keep his Sam battery silent that makes sense

@Lord Manhammer which conflict are you referring to? Bosnian Serbs knew very well about Harm missiles that go back to the source of the radar. Serbian army in Kosovo used to bait those Harm missiles by turning on the microwave oven in the field and leave the door open pointing roughly to the sky. They also used masive numbers of decoys in the field like tanks with warm water. American thermal scanning of the battlefield would discover those warm water tanks and they obviously thought it's the tank, so they'd quickly send a missile on it. Thousands of those decoys were destroyed. Americans counted this as destroyed armour and at one stage I remember they bragged about decimation of Serbian armour. The fact is they did hit a few real tanks. Those tanks were very well camouflaged and waiting for NATO land invasion. Portable anti armour units were ready in those forests along with brigades of special forces units. Forests, hills, mud roads... If those NATO units did decide to enter by land, oh boy... Vietnam would look like a walk in the park! Anyway, it's better that soldiers didn't die. At the end of the war NATO was shocked that only about 3% of Serbian armour was lost after relentless bombing campaign day and night for 3 months non stop. They realised it when all the armour started getting out of forests and tunnels. That must've been a comic situation in NATO HQ when they realised they haven't destroyed almost anything!

It’s a heat seeking missile but yet it’s radar guided lmfao. That’s a pretty slow missile lmfao.

NO SAM from a SA-13 "Gopher" or SA-8 "Gekko" (other Systems don´t look similar to the one in the movie!) or any other Anti-Aircraft-Missile-System from this era was ever able to perform such change of directions or could avoid Flares, which were dropped literally "in da face" of the SAM-Rocket! Let alone the speed difference: The missile cruises with 1,5 Mach which is the highest possible speed for a F-18 B or D in more than 9000 feet! So if both (SAM and Fighter) are so extremly low, the rocket will catch up with the fighter in a couple of seconds! Pure action but non realistic!
