Behind the scenes: How WTOP moved an entire radio station overnight

Күн бұрынYou’ve most likely heard by now that WTOP has moved from its longtime home on Idaho Avenue in Northwest D.C. to new digs on Wisconsin Avenue in Chevy Chase, Maryland. But how did a whole radio station make the transition while continuously broadcasting around the clock?

It was more fun when we used analog lines and patch panels. I remember swiching an FM station from one tower site to another. From the studio building, the transmitter sites were about 50 degrees apart. We simply rotated the STL dish to about halfway between the old tower and the new, turned the new on, rurned the old off, and finished rotating the STL dish squarely on the new antenna. We made the switch at midnight and I dont even think anyone knew, except that our signal was better! Cool stuff, though. Used to listen to WTOP when I lived in DC and worked dor Westwood One in Arlington. First class operation!

I visited this old studio in October 2015 and saw then-afternoon newscaster Hillary Howard at work (I know Hillary from being the honorary historian of "It's Academic"). It was a wonderful visit.
