You know what, you're probably right, there probably isn't anything like this. And that is why TE have carte blanche to charge whatever they like for their products. Don't get me wrong, I have 6 PO's and an Op1 but £1200 for what is essentially a mixer (everything else could be done with another device) is insane. And TE have put this video and I'm sure more to come, out so they can justify the price, that says to me that they've heard their customers and deep down they know it's not just over priced but wildly so!

You can multi track record to your phone or tablet. Since most peoples phones or tablets make better multi tracks than the OP-1 (GarageBand is 32 tracks and free on iOS) there isn’t as much need for a new OP-1. OP-Z is better than OP-1 in so many ways, and again, if you want a multi track, you can just connect it to your phone via usb or line in.
@lemonrain2741
@lemonrain2741 2 жыл бұрын
And of course, the screen on a phone or tablet is better than anything TE can produce, and by omitting a large screen the devices can be even more portable. Like OP-Z, which can be used to create amazing visuals even from your existing photos and videos. This also helps bring the price down.

Well they came out with the OP-Z, which was really the replacement, and uses a smartphone or tablet as a screen, which is way better than the screen on OP-1 anyway. Also a smartphone or tablet can be a better multi track recorder than the 4 track on OP-1. The only thing OP-1 has over the OP-Z is the metal casing. They are both cool devices though.

@@lemonrain2741 OP-Z build quality is garbage. This is a disposable product that you cannot repair in any meaningful way (except for the battery which can be easily replaced). I had two and both had pretty significant issues within less than three months: encoders popping off (can be fixed with plumber's tape lmao), bending case, double triggers on keys, dying LEDs that can't be replaced). It's too bad because it is a really cool product otherwise but honestly TE should be ashamed of the build quality of the OP-Z and should fix it rather than continue to keep selling them knowing all of these issues

Now a behind the scenes look at how you set its ridiculous price? "Figure out a reasonable profit than do 2x-3x that" seems to be the TE method. At least this overpriced mixer is made of metal, unlike other TE products where they don't give you an outside case at all (POs) and charge dearly for the plastic to make the devices somewhat resilient to damage, or like the OP-Z where it's actually made from spaghetti.

When I watch this video, what I see are highly skilled workers doing a job they are in all likelihood quite proud of and thankful for. I am not pro-capitalism, but it is sad that people are like: why aren’t these people Europeans or USAers (as if that somehow makes products more valuable); and others are like: these people are nothing but “cheap labour.” I want to believe that TE does care about its workers and employees, all the way through the process.

@@sebastienjurkowski spot on! It's a wonderful country (done some travelling there myself). I know this may sound ridiculous but I've a theory as to why so many Op-z's are bending out of shape. They are using a pretty experimental combination of materials for the main chassis, and I imagine all of the original design/construction/ist builds were all put together in Sweden. Sweden has a very, very different climate compared to Malaysia. Sure, the units may be put together in a climate controlled factory environment, but I can't see that that would be the case whilst waiting to be shipped. Is there a possibility of the very high year-round humidity of Malaysia effecting/causing the op-z to warp? Daft I know, but I am seriously curious. Let's go Genting!

@AdamHeinrich92 2 жыл бұрын
Why would an european company choose to assemble in Malaysia if the labor was not cheap there?
@lemonrain2741
@lemonrain2741 2 жыл бұрын
@@AdamHeinrich92 I guess it depends on what is meant by “cheap labour.” When I hear that word, I hear a lot of judgment, including towards the workers themselves, though perhaps that is not what is meant. I am not an economist, but I assume in some countries a dollar can go further. So a person may still make a good living wage or better on what in another country would not be sufficient. Perhaps it is also less expensive to setup a factory. Probably many other variables as well. This would help keep the costs of the TX-6 down while also providing good paying jobs. I think the TX-6 costs as much as it does because it has a particular and very powerful feature set. There is nothing that really compares, that has this particular feature set. I assume that the only way to make it cheaper would be to downgrade the feature set, but I think TE made the right choices. It is not a useful feature set for most people perhaps, but it is a very particular device. So I would assume that if the TX-6 was made in Sweden for example, it would be even more expensive and might not even be feasible, because it is already quite expensive.
@compositecomposure
@compositecomposure 2 жыл бұрын
I would say some of the cost is down to trying to recoup the R&D, in some of the marketing material they say TX-6 design “over the years”. That sounds like a fair amount of engineering and prototyping to get the product to mass production.

@@lemonrain2741 my answer from the other comment: you should consider the difference between a worker actually being employed at a company and a factory doing contract work for a company - for example an employee in Sweden has many rights, the employer pays for social security and pension funds, whereas TE probably has no legal obligations towards the factory workers (who get paid a fraction of Europeans), that sit in Asia. And there are environmental and workers safety standards too, that differ greatly between Europe (Sweden) and Asia (Malaysia). Why I stress that "their people" are the Swedish people? Because without Swedish people and culture TE would simply not exist.

@@teenageengineering you must be joking, that you didn't want to produce in Sweden (or Europe) because you found higher skilled people in Malaysia. I am sure the savings in regards to labour cost were the essential reason and Malayans of course have lesser workers rights and social security than the average European as well. Energy over there is cheaper and probably dirtier than in Europe. A production over there involves a lot of transportation, because Malaysia sure isn't the biggest market for your luxury devices. And with regards to morals, why didn't you decide to give something back to Sweden and its people? Without your country and your people there would have been no TE, I am sure you know that.
