Behind the scenes photos from the production of Ken Annakin's 1965 film, Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines. Accompanied by the theme, I own nothing.

I mentioned this movie to a German friend while we were visiting the Messerschmitt Museum in Munich many years ago. I was afraid he would get offended to be reminded of how the Germans portrayed themselves in this film. But no - he laughed out loud, saying he'd never seen anything so hilarious. Apparently, Germans were able to laugh at themselves seeing this movie. God bless them.

You’ve picked the best two from that era (plus The Battle of Britain, obviously). Tony Curtis in The Great Race when he smiles at the camera and his teeth twinkle, the hero all in white. All is well with the world. A lifetime onwards and my views of national stereotypes are entirely shaped by Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines. I love the French!

Holy Underwear, Batman ! What a sheer and utter delight to watch this video ! It has made my day, my week & my weekend ! I went to a downtown theater as a kid and watched this classic comedy in 1965 when it was first released. Enjoyed it so much ! For some reason I have never seen it shown on TV. I can remember the theme & so many scenes SO very well ! Wonderful ariel photography of so many vintage planes and what a superb cast: Stuart Whitman, Sarah Miles, Robert Morley, Terry-Thomas, James Fox, Gert Frobe, etc ! And to see so many marvelous behind the scenes still is super groovy ! THANK YOU so much for sharing with us ! :-)

Fun fact: A lot of the airplanes have continuity errors. They first tried to use the original designs as much as possible, but were forced to modify them, because most were barely airworthy and not at all able to do what the production crew needed them to do.

At 0:17 Jean-Pierre Cassel (who played French pilot Pierre Dubois) poses with Joan Hughes, the wartime flying instructor who actually piloted the Santos-Dumont Demoiselle replica in the movie. According to Wikipedia: The replica of the Santos-Dumont Demoiselle, a forerunner of today's ultralight aircraft, was unable to leave the ground except in short hops. Extending the wingspan and fitting a more powerful Ardem 50 hp engine produced only marginal improvement." Further research found out that: "the Demoiselle's designer and first pilot, Alberto Santos-Dumont was a very short, slightly built man. A suitably small pilot, Joan Hughes, a wartime member of the Air Transport Auxiliary who was the Airways Flying Club chief instructor, was hired. With the reduced payload, the diminutive Demoiselle flew very well, and Hughes proved a consummate stunt flyer, able to undertake exacting manoeuvres." In the movie, the French aircraft flew amazing maneuvers, aiming to hit Benny Hill at the control tower and missing him by a few inches; flying closely over Terry-Thomas' head (Sir Percy) causing him to slide down the roof of his hangar. What a woman pilot! Of course you never see her face in the movie. What you see is Cassel, sitting at the pit, naughtily laughing his heart out.
