This musical is one of my all-time favorites. Honestly, I think the song that really sums up Aaron's character is "I'm Alive." It's a fantastic song on its own, but it helps fill in clues of who/what he is. This is a show that I really wish had a pro-shot because it's just so good. The whole cast is amazing. The daughter is played by Jennifer Damiano who is so fantastic and has a really good story arc and songs...and just yeah. Not to mention they have a really cool set.

Thanks for reacting to this! I understand all your questions, without context Aaron's character can be confusing. It's complicated, and it feels wrong to call him a villain. But he entices his mother to do things that are harmful to her. But as Carrie Fisher mentioned, she's imagining him in this song. So the reason he's acting like a lover is because that's what she needs at that moment - her relationship with her husband is failing, so she needs this imaginary version of her son to comfort her and justify and encourage her harmful behaviors. It's hard for me to explain all this without spoiling the plot, but yeah you're right to feel weird about Aaron in this song! He and his mother have an unhealthy relationship. And yes, it's a really sad musical, but a beautiful one.

Also, part of the 'lover' dynamic at the end is because Dan and her son are fighting for her attention. Dan is trying to support her and wants her to be healthy, whereas her son is a negative influence and trying to pull her to do bad things.

I never saw it as a lover dynamic. I always saw it as Diana imagining Gabe there influencing her because she WANTS to spiral, because that's the only way she can be with her son. She wants to choose him and that's why she's imagining him, so she can justify her choice.

Just came across this, just to give a little insight. Aarons character is fighting inside the mothers head not to be forgotten! The father (J. Robert Spencer, Original Jersey Boys - Nick Massi) is pleading, and trying to help her heal, not forget, but heal, and come to terms the loss of their son. Absolutely amazing show.

I'm so happy you reacted to this! This is one of my all time favorite Tony's performances. Next to Normal is an incredibly powerful show, that handles mental illness in an very real way. I understand the confusion with the character dynamics, but it is hard to say anything without spoiling anything. I will say it all makes sense if you watch the entire show (which I HIGHLY recommend). Thank you for another wonderful reaction!

The only way to watch the whole show is unfortunately through bootlegs, which can be dicey to react to on youtube.

Also, I _really_ can't say anything about Aaron's character because it's a major plot point of the show

Ok my biggest pet peeve about this musical is people calling Aaron's character Gabe a villain. He is not a villain. I can't explain without giving the whole plot away.

This show has a very special place in my heart. I was fortunate enough to see the original cast as my first Broadway show! I look forward to watching you react to the full thing somewhere down the line (just have the tissues ready on hand!)

I really want someone to recommend more of Next to Normal... maybe some of Natalie's characters songs (or even Hey #3 for some wholesomeness, or Growing up Unstable for an off-Broadway song) because I love her character's songs, and Jennifer Damiano does a great job of showing how that environment fucks with a young teenager's head.

I mean one of the songs that Aaron sings is a lullaby to his mum trying to convince her to kill herself so yeh I guess he is the villain

Without spoiling it, mental illness and depression are the villains, not the son

Have you had a chance to read about what the show is about since you first watched this scene from the Tony’s? Aaron’s character, the son is a figment of his mom’s imagination. He died in childhood and she is delusional and can’t give him up. Hasn’t been able to grieve her loss. The father can not accept the wife’s mental illness and her inability to give up the fantasy of her son..at the end, the father finally comes to terms with the loss of Gabe, his son, and he finally “comes to him” and there is a reconciliation of sorts. You have to watch a slime of this. It’s fabulous.

I think, before reacting to a performance such as this, do a tiny bit of research so you know that the son is dead, mom is bipolar, dad is suffering to hold on to his wife and pull her out of her manic depressive episodes. Mom is in a sort of denial that the son is dead so she imagines him not as he was but as someone who will protect her from her husband, who she believes cannot understand, as she feels she can, the pain of losing a son even though both of them lost their child. In her imaginings, she sees her son as her rescuer and as someone who will allow her to remain in her mania without taking the medications, which with bipolar people, is a terribly difficult thing to do because as soon as they feel better (if they can even get through the side effects) they stop taking their medications. That is the sum of it.

This is a good summary. You can’t make a critical assessment of the song or the performance without know the basic premise. This reviewer needs to either read a summary or watch a bootleg of it.
