This : "Behold, I tell you a mystery" is breathtaking ! Nobody can be compared to Philippe Sly in the Messiah ! The timbre is magnificent, the interpretation is intelligent, sensitive, powerful, it's infinitely beautiful, without being mannered, without looking for any catchy effect. Embodied art. A sublime moment. Thank you very much.

So well said! "Infinitely beautiful" indeed! This performance brings tears to my eyes. And that lingering appoggiatura at the end of the final cadenza - gorgeous beyond words. And let's not leave the trumpet soloist unmentioned - a brilliant performance!

Playing this for the prelude at my father's funeral tomorrow in New Mexico, thank you Philippe Sly. You have such a beautiful voice. My father was 88 at his death, a great man of God, kind to all, founded a homeless mission in my hometown, went to the Federal Prison every week to do a Bible Study/mentoring with the prisoners for SIXTEEN years. His life was his testimony. I BELIEVE he will be raised incorruptible. Thank you again.

Wow! What a thrilling rendition-and in a live performance, too! Already at the pianissimo delivery of "mystery" in the recitative introduction, I knew we were in for something special. The evenness, strength, and agility of the voice across all registers, the effortlessly precise intonation, the original (and completely persuasive) dynamics and ornamentation, the intelligent and sensitive declamation of the text... You, sir, are the complete package.

Wow! As a trumpet player myself, who has played this many times, this whole performance is absolutely superlative. The music is not that technically difficult; it's all about interpretation and these two are masters.

Having lived a quarter century in New York City, let me just re-state the obvious: this is such a quintessential NYC performance, with such reserve and yet such bravado, to defy any expectation. Trinity Church, by Royal Charter of 1699 by Queen Anne, in the city of New York. You see how there are no extraneous baubles on the walls, no extraneous embellishments. There is only the Word and the Music. Surely this is how Haendel wanted his Messiah performed! Phillipe Sly is just magnificent and brings new and unexpected qualities and interpretations to this moving aria and song. Thank you so much, Mr. Sly and Trinity Church! For those who may never get a chance to hear this man live, I am sorry. I have listened to many world renowned professionals in masterclasses and live with amazing voices but Philippe is one in a trillion. The density of his sound is so great and powerful that it is mind blowing. More important than that, however, he has the most beautiful tone of any singer I have ever heard and may ever hear. When I first heard him (I had the pleasure to sing in choir for the Messiah that he was a soloist for) I finally understood what people meant by having an "angel-like" voice. Truly, one of the most gifted AND skilled singers I have ever heard. Hope some day I will hear him again.

Mr. Sly has sung many songs but he has never sung with such passion and focus and intensity as this. "And we shall be changed!!!" -- It is now the age of the coronavirus, and 3/4 of our very says: all I want to do it go back to what it was!!! -- The problem is: everything has changed. You can change with it, or drop to the side like a stone. -- Trinity Wall Street is the perfect setting for such an incantation of this celestial piece of music. All the sin of the world heaped up upon it, all the greedy and avariciousness of it, in one place, and--at the same time: the wish to repent and change and make things anew. No one can argue this. Only the music can carry us forward. I listen to this performance at the darkest moments of my life and it carries me forward. THANK YOU MR. SLAY AND TRINITY WALL STREET!!!
