Today, we're taking a look at the all new Behringer Flow 8! But first, let me give you some useful timestamps:
00:00 - Intro
00:27 - Flow 8 Overview
05:23 - Flow 8 App Overview
06:51 - Effects
15:19 - Setting up a mix

20:29 - Wrap up
This awesome little digital mixer packs a 10x2 digital interface for recording in your DAW of choice as well as two built in effect engines that actually sound quite good! Whether you're looking for a compact console for mixing live, an interface for recording music, podcasts, or even youtube videos, this thing should definitely be on the top of your list! And for only $229, this thing is quite the steal.
You can download the unprocessed versions of my acoustic, vocal, and the Mains L&R mix here: www.dropbox.com/sh/hvdpuo9fk9... This should show the quality of these preamps and will be a good reference for what you can expect in real-world use!

Super-helpful and detailed review. As an owner of an older Behringer USB interface and a separate FX box, the Flow 8 looks really capable as a way of combining everything together. The mix coming in as well as a separate stereo input is a nice touch.

Since it was released, there has been a firmware update to add parametric channel EQ and lots more. But what I wonder is whether they changed the compression so the user can set any parameters besides just the percentage?

I was really hoping this thing would have parametric EQ. Edit: It does on the output side for Mains and Busses. You can also delay your mains and/or monitor lines for time aligning your speakers, which is a huge advantage over the equivalent analog mixer.

Hey Scot. Thank you for your review on the Flow 8. Been eyeing this little board for a while now to go with my small band setup. Thank you for explaining the offset function on the faders. I was wondering how behringer would handle setting up levels on the app and having non motorised faders on the console. I do have one question regarding the jack inputs. The manual mention inputs 6 and 8 to be high-z for guitars/bass and inputs 5 and 7 as line level inputs. Will this result in different levels if i patch a keyboard into inputs 5 and 6? Also, have you faced any issues using the flow 8 live (Bluetooth failure, ground loop hum on inputs 5 - 8)?

@ChurchTechTalks

Thanks Chris! The Flow 8 is a 10x2 interface, so you can record all 8 input channels (2 xlr, 2 combo, 4 instrument) plus the main mix which comes into your DAW as 9 & 10 all simultaneously.
@marcklein1390
@marcklein1390 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this detailed demo of the Behringer Flow 8. Perhaps you can clarify how the channels are mapped into the DAW. The manual says that all channels are "pre-fader" channels. Does it mean that channel 1-8 have no FX/EQ and Level-Settings in the recording? What's about the mic gain and limiter? Does the main mix (channel 9, 10) include FX, EQ Level Settings in the recording?
@ChurchTechTalks
@ChurchTechTalks 3 жыл бұрын
Pre fader generally means it records everything except for fader level, I seem to remember thinking the tap point for the channel was actually just after the preamp (so no EQ/Comp...etc) but maybe I’m remembering that wrong. The mains definitely include the fx.

Hi great video and sorry if I missed the question I am about to ask. So I'm looking at getting this and plugging the main out into my atem mini pro for live streams. I plan on plugging my mic into the flow 8 and also discord chat into one of the line inputs. And possible using the windows mixer to rout my gameplay to another channel. But on the app I cann see a blue main slider with BT/USB on it. What is the use of this slider is it the recording Input volume of the usb, or what I'm hoping is it the gain level of my pc audio output. As ideally I would like to send my pc audio via usb into the mixer and then send it to main out over to the atem. But ideally I would like some kind of control of my pc audio before sending it out of the mixer.

You can connect bluetooth audio, but if you're using it for gaming, there may be a delay. I would recommend going with wired connections for anything where latency would be problematic.

Are the effects processed on the input or output channels? so if I record my voice into my DAW with the effects on, will my DAW record exactly this with effects on or is it just for hearing on the output channel? The Flow 8 ist pretty interesting, might get my hands on one of them oh and can you change the tap button lighting? this flashing red light could be really annoying to me after some time I guess
@ChurchTechTalks
@ChurchTechTalks 2 жыл бұрын
On a DAW, I believe the effects processed on their own channel. Think of it like a bus with a perfect inserted on it. The cool thing is your multi-tracking so you get all of the channels individually and you get the main mix with all the processing. I don’t believe you can change the tap tempo flashing.

Though I understand the additional channels of the Behringer, how would you compare the Behringer interface/pre-amps to the Scarlett 2i2?
@ChurchTechTalks
@ChurchTechTalks 3 жыл бұрын
I’ve used both extensively and they both sound good. I feel like most interfaces these days sound pretty great and the real limiting factor is often other things (performance, mic selection, mixing techniques...etc.) if you’re deciding between a 2i2 and the Flow 8, I honestly think you’re getting more for your money with the Flow 8. If you think you’ll ever use it live, Flow 8. If you really think you can hear the very subtle and probably unimportant differences in the preamps OR you don’t need any of the extra stuff the Flow 8 offers and would rather save the $80, then go Scarlett.

That said, I could well envision using the mixer as a standalone rig for quick-and-dirty shows, too, making it easy to dial in enough channels (vocals, guitar(s), a stompbox pedal and more).

Thank you very much for this video. You may have said it in the video, but my English is not good enough. That's why I wanted to ask in writing. I live stream on Twitch. What I'm wondering is this. When I use all these effects and digital audio enhancements, will I experience a latency when monitoring the audio? Latency in hearing myself prevents me from speaking fluently. Is it a suitable device for radio broadcasts on Twitch? I use Behringer x1222 analog mixer in my live broadcasts. You know, when I speak, I turn down the volume of the music with a fader. When I'm done speaking, I turn the music back up. Spotify music sound from my computer and my voice from my microphone go to the broadcast as a single stereo mix. In other words, when I add any digital effects to my microphone, my music sound is affected because they all go on the air as a mix. Whereas, I want to make sound improvements to my microphone input and music input separately. Do you think it would be a significant upgrade? Will this solve my problem? For this kind of solution, I normally have to use an expensive and large digital mixer like the Presonus StudioLive 16. And I'm looking for a more compact and cheaper solution. You can also suggest a different mixer. Thank you so much.

@ChurchTechTalks 3 жыл бұрын
You control the sends to the fx. So you could send any amount of any channel to each of the two fx engines.
@mikesrandomchannel
@mikesrandomchannel Жыл бұрын
It‘s just 2 effects total and you can send as much of each effect to each channel as you want. However, this is pretty limited. If you are a singer/songwriter, for example, you can‘t apply Ambience (vocal) and Ambience (instrument) separately, so you effectively can‘t use that effect (effect #1!) because you‘d have vocal ambience on your guitar or guitar ambience on your vocal. I guess for $250 it‘s too much to ask for and as an interface, this is irrelevant because you get 10 channels to play with. But I‘m struggling to see how this is really useful for anyone playing more than one instrument: you basically get one effect per instrument if you are using a specialised effect, so e.g. Ambience for the vocal, Guitar Reverb for your guitar. But that is that. You can‘t have Flanger and Reverb on your guitar because then your vocal would get nothing. Behringer could at least have had independent effects for the first couple of inputs or something. Anyways, rant over. And like I said, it is a mixer and interface for $250, so the effects are pretty secondary here.

What I would do is create an aggregate device in protools combining the built-in output with the Flow 8, then I’d route your tracks out of the built-in output and I’d use an 1/8” to stereo 1/4” cable to take it back into the Flow 8.

Hi I hope you can help me fix this. I just bought the flow 8 and a brand new MacBook. I installed simply put and Everything goes well until after I select the newest version (738 now) and click update. A legend comes up that reads… DFU ERROR 7: failed to prepare dfu update. The mini screen in the mixer stays red in update mode until I turn it off. One time the legend didn’t appear and it continued to update in the simply put but the mixer said UPDATE FAIL. If anyone could help me i would really appreciate it.

can I adjust the faders on the app? and does that make the fader move on the mixer?
@ChurchTechTalks
@ChurchTechTalks 3 жыл бұрын
You can adjust the fader in the app, but these are not flying faders, so you will have to move the fader into position on the mixer. They have a nice little LED indicator to let you know when it's in position and the physical fader won't control volume until you have it in the same position as it is in the app. Sounds more complicated than it is, it's super easy and pretty standard stuff, Presonus does a very similar thing with their studio live consoles.

Then I open the LOGIC , setup the interface into flow8, it's the right setup for sure. I can't record the vocal from my mic, there is no vocal signal into the logic software..... but I can heared my vocal from the earphone.. so hopefully i think you can guide me to play this interface a little bit ? maybe another comminucate way or something else ? very very thx about this .

Not bothered at all friend! Would love to help you, but I don’t know much about Logic, I’ve always been a Pro Tools guy. You could try making sure you’re on the latest firmware - also, since it sounds like your mac is seeing the flow 8, maybe a routing issue in Logic? I would recommend reaching out to Music Group to get customer support on it - maybe even find a Logic forum where you could talk to some more seasoned Logic users and make sure everything is set properly. Wishing you the best of luck!

What are the minimum specifications for a cell phone in terms of power and RAM. I don't want to use my personal phone for that, and prefer to buy a less expensive phone just for the mixer. Can you specify a Samsung Android model and an iPhone that would do the job without glitches? Thanks in advance and thanks for the nice job explaining.
@ChurchTechTalks
@ChurchTechTalks 2 жыл бұрын
I’m an iPhone guy, so I’m always going to recommend iPhones - but in this case I also have experience developing for android and I’ll tell you that there are thousands and thousands of cheap android phones - these things never get tested by developers and there are tons of bugs in the lower end android stuff because of that. So I’d recommend a used iPhone SE as the cheapest way to get something powerful enough to run without glitches. Should be able to get one on eBay between $50-$100

@@ChurchTechTalks Thank you so much for all your good info. I have a last question, but I'm not sure if you're able to help me, after all, your video is about the Flow-8. I have a small music setup and I'm considering two options for a small digital mixer: The Flow-8, which requires a smart phone and the QSC Touchmix 8, which is a bit more expensive, but does not require anything else. Are you able to give me a comparison between those two? Thanks in advance and take care.
@ChurchTechTalks
@ChurchTechTalks 2 жыл бұрын
@@toddgoes7935 Those are some very different price points (the Touchmix 8 is over $1,100) and theres a lot in between too! I think you might be limiting yourself if you're only considering these two platforms. For that price you could get an XR18 AND a brand new iPad. Even an XR12 at $399 plus a brand new iPad at $329, you could have a rocking wirelessly controlled PA for less than the QSC Touchmix costs. What exactly are you looking to do with a small digital mixer? Is this for small gigs? Personal music listening? Mixing? Maybe share some of your use cases and let those define your parameters a bit more.

I think the FX section definitely has a lot of ways it could expand. However, speaking as a guitarist, we're a very picky bunch haha! We probably wouldn't be happy with any of the modeling anyways :) Best to stick to the HX Stomp or mic your own pedalboard/amp. I think if they split their attention on this too much, the end result would just be a product that could do everything... very poorly - as opposed to a product thats more focused and does what it does well.

@@ChurchTechTalks Behringer seems obsessed with reverbs & delays, I have a Behringer X Air XR12 it has mostly delay type fx & a couple of guitar amps, I was going to swap it for the Soundcraft Ui12 which has a good set of fx until I saw this (Ui12 has no USB interface). Of course I can use external fx but it is an advantage to be able to plug into one box & record. I also have a Behringer TM300 Tube Amp Modeler which can be had for less Than £22 & is fantastic. Behringer is bringing affordable technology to the masses, apart from guitar fx this mixer ticks all the boxes.
