BEING A CNA while in nursing school is an interesting experience. You're some where in between knowing a lot and not knowing the behind the scenes of nursing. My extensive experience as a CNA has tremendously helped me with patient interaction and scenarios. Being in healthcare while learning about nursing content is very helpful with connecting the concepts. The CNA life and experience is a lot of hard work, and I have a greater respect for those who assist the patients on an intimate and personal level. Nursing school requires a lot of adaptability, and being a CNA has taught me a lot of the fundamental skills of nursing. I hope you all enjoyed the video. Let me know if you want me to do a CNA series👏🏽 I would love to!

This is a good video, I agree with alot of things that you've said I'm currently a CNA and I'm in school for nursing, my advice to anyone who has considered a career in nursing is, be a CNA first at least 1 year that way you know what your getting yourself into, and also you have to deal with alot in nursing toxic backstabbing coworkers, disrectful patients and family members. and inconsiderate management. The list goes on. Thanks for posting this.

Loved this video 😍. In general, people do make it seem as though being a CNA will heavily assist with the nursing school classes. It's very refreshing to hear your knowledge on this topic. I was worried that because I didn't have experience as a CNA I wouldn't perform as well.

There are many people doing very well in nursing school with no medical background. I think it’s important to just have an overall interest in patient care and you’ll do just fine. When asked, I try to share my field knowledge with my classmates as much as possible. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn’t.

Ty this is helpful! I am trying to decide whether to take the CNA money and just dive into my pre-reqs.

It depends! My cna job at the time was super flexible and also gives you a good idea of what your life will be like in healthcare. Because I’ve seen people spend all that money and don’t even want to be nurses fr

Okay what do you think of this plan: 1. Complete prerequisites for nursing school 2. Take (and pass) the CNA cert course 3. Get a job as a CNA 4. Apply to nursing school and pass 5. Get a job as an RN is this the order I should do things? Thanks.

That sounds like a great plan and most nursing programs are requiring a CNA cert now. 🤍

Hey. A simple question. I’m a high school senior aspiring to be a nurse. I’m okay in high school science and I suck at Maths. Will it make nursing difficult for me? Or do courses in nursing school provide more intellectual depth?

Hi! You will have to know anatomy and physiology very well as it will help you recall how diseases work. I promise it will pay off later if you give your all in those two classes. Once you know how they work it will determine what you do for your patient. An example would be vein insufficiency. The veins in the legs are having a hard time pumping blood BACK to the heart so we’re going to elevate the legs to minimize gravity. We wouldn’t do that for arterial insufficiency bc we would be increasing resistance for blood to get TO the legs. As far as math, you cannot escape it in nursing school but it is more so simple algebra. You’ll be working alot with milligrams and mLs. So if the order is to give 100 mg of liquid Tylenol, but your bottle in stock is 50mg/mL. How much would you give? You would give 2 mL worth of medication. That one is really simple but they start to add in weight, units, per dose (ex: if they’re getting 3 times a day what would be the amount for ea dose), etc. You will also have to know your conversions, pounds to kg, teaspoon and tablespoon to mL, etc. What I just told you may seem like a lot but it’s all in how you set the problem up, everything can be done w a basic calculator (sometimes in your head), and it is consistent through the nursing program just a little more complex sometimes. They like to trick us and throw in distractions. They will help you w this! I hope that helps. Focus on basic Algebra, A&P I, and A&P II. Shoot for As w all of the core nursing prerequisites, so you can be nice and competitive when you’re ready to go! And notice I said shoot for it, please don’t get discouraged if things don’t workout EXACTLY how you planned. I had quite a few Bs before getting into program (but I wouldn’t recommend that being your personal standard) Good luck 💜
