With unprecedented access to children within the Gypsy and Traveller community; this three part documentary series explores their world, through their eyes.
These children revel in the freedom of a gypsy childhood while facing prejudice and even eviction from an early age. Demonstrating maturity beyond their years, they offer an insight into one of the most marginalised yet resilient communities in the UK
13 year old Sylvanna is part English Traveller and dreams of becoming a model, “I am quite different to many travellers. They have got some of the old fashioned ways...they believe in just staying home, helping and clean and the men go out. I believe women are about as equal as men.” Determined to succeed and provide for her family she must first go through the ruthless casting process. When faced with the decision “£10,000 to cut your hair” Sylvanna shows commendable resilience as she proves her Gypsy identity is not for sale.

I feel like having a close nit community that the children are being raised in is doing far more for these children than what today's society is doing for other children. The girls just repeat: "This is what we do.." - it's unfortunate. The good thing though is that as time goes on more families have been leaning towards the progressive side of things and allowing their daughters to attend high school, finish high school, and work before getting married.... Sounds horrible, but it's better than not knowing how to read at all.

If you are familiar with travellers/gypsies in the UK., the girls look like slappers from childhood. They paste thick makeup and older fashions and huge hairdos onto the very young girls and if you've seen the women... argh. It's not beauty, it's this grotesque look they're into, very chavvish, just trash level stuff. They marry the kids to each other at 16 too ... and it's decided by the parents really. It's backward, misogynist and I am sick of the whining that they're oppressed when they are their own worst enemies, rejecting education and even basic literacy, pushing kids to marry as soon as its legal (child marriage is connected to poverty) and having a large cohort of males that support themselves through horrible criminal enterprise. Gypsy sites in the UK have been the scene of many modern slavery cases too - they predate on special needs men and often alcoholic eastern Europeans and lock them onsite and make them work in gangs doing their shit driveway work etc.

I lived on campsites outside Paris & Amsterdam in the 90s. There were gypsies there, and since we lived there, we got to know them a bit. They were family oriented, friendly, but did keep to themselves more. They loaned us tools when we needed. They seemed responsible and didn't cause any trouble. I feel weird calling them travelers though because we called each other travelers. People who didn't just travel on holiday. People who lived traveling as a lifestyle. Getting odd jobs here and there and/or busking to stay in the same place for weeks or months at a time. It's similar to a Gypsy lifestyle, I guess, but different. Same same but different :))

My husband was born in a 2 birth caravan/trailer and lived in it with both his parents and 3 older siblings until he was almost 7 yrs old when his parents had finally saved enough to buy a house. That first boy Royston is so sweet. Obviously he's been raised with good morals, a busy mind and dedicated hobbys and that's the ultimate brain workout for any human. I like how his Dad is teaching him HOW to work rather than just making him do hard labour with no skills. You can see how carefully he was doing the work and how proud he was with himself for a job well done. His Dad standing back and allowing his son to do things under his watchful eye, shows his son that he has faith in his ability and trusts him, something a lot of parents should do. Be there for support but step back a bit more, you don't protect a child from the harsh realities of life by wrapping them in cotton wool and doing everything for them. You protect them better by empowering them and openly admiring their strengths. Good job Dad on the quality of work too. I'd be hesitant to hire a traveller to carry out pricey work like that, because so many of them have no skills. Sorry but that's not prejudice it's the truth. I had a Father and son do my garden last year, just cutting grass and tidying borders, no building work thank God, and to say it was shoddy is an understatement. I was then practically intimidated on my doorstep into paying a ridiculous sum even though I made it clear it was not good enough! Never again! But I'd hire this professional father in a heartbeat, as his work shows skill and attention to detail. It doesn't bother me if someone has no actual official qualifications, because many many people ARE just as skilled but learned through a parent how to do trade type work, like how my Dad taught me to decorate and use tools and my Mum taught me to cook and sew etc. I enjoyed hearing about this young man and his background. He's a lovely boy who's been raised right. But no doubt I'm about to be disappointed seeing the different way girls are treated....🙄 .................................... Watched a bit more and one thing I AM disappointed in, is how many NON traveller BRATS are bullying these children. My heart is aching for hearing their stories from school. The little girl with her designer bags "I bet you think I'm spoilt?" No sweetheart I don't think you're spoilt for having expensive items. Being spoilt is about DEMANDING and EXPECTING to be given everything you want. All I see is a pretty little girl, a bit lost since her parents split up, missing the friends from where she used to live, and being bullied by the new children she's trying to make friends with. Her Mum and Dad spending money on her is purely because they dote on her, as they should, and trying to boost her confidence about herself while kids from OUR families are trying to tear her down! Those two little boys talking to Tony whilst polishing his car.... OMFG I've got such a lump in my throat and on the verge of tears! Just LOOK at how forlorn, vulnerable, young and fragile those precious boys are, AGAIN from being bullied at school! WTF are their SCHOOLS playing at FFS? Too worried about their damn OFSTED score that they probably fob off rumours of bullying in their school. *"We take a very strong anti-bullying stance in our school which is why there's so few incidents of bullying here, which we are extremely proud off" blah blah fucking BLAHHHHH!* That's the kind of bullshit most schools come out with. No, the REASON they have little bullying is because they refuse to acknowledge incidents as "bullying". They either outright ignore bullying, or will attack the victim for the second time, by implying they instigated it. That it was a *"six of one, and half a dozen of the other"* type of incident. These children are just sweet young babies, and it makes no difference where they come from, race, country, lifestyle or colour, they should not have to go to school where every day they have to endure that. That's on ALL PARENTS to teach their kids not to be a bullying little bastard! 😠 I'm literally smiling with all of the children, but that lil chubby Alicia I think she's called...? She is adorable. They all are don't get me wrong, every single one has been impressive, mature, confident, wise, grounded and well behaved, all of their parents have done a great job of raising such lovely thoughtful children. But that gorgeous little cheeky chubby chops with her glasses on and unruly hair, has melted my heart the most. I absolutely love her. ❤

I have lived around some of these people. My main gripe is their almost total unawareness of feelings of animals. Horses worked to death, beaten and starved. Puppies and kittens too young to leave the mother, taken and used to incite pity in begging. Children injected with caustic agents to cause terrible lesions and sores for adults to point to while they ask for money to pay a dr. (Kid never gets near a dr in reality) A very hard situation to encounter. I feel sorrow and pity mostly, if I am being honest. A lot of innocence suffers for their stated Gypsy freedom.

Kids join gangs to feel they belong kids have lost social skills and don’t see the beauty in the world around them as too busy on phones and tec. Ppl don’t come together to support one another! So really who’s to say who has the richer more fulfilling life it’s only measured by what we ourselves class as important. No life that is walked is perfect but it’s what’s right for you. So like.. looking at it from their cultures shoes... Can't they see that reading and writing would be beneficial even as a homemaker? Follow recipes for cooking, patterns if you make clothes, instructions on cleaning products or HOW to clean certain things, reading books to entertain small children not in school. It's to their benefit that they at LEAST read and write.... Not being able to is such a weird hill to die on.

The thing that gets me is when they complain in other episodes about not having anywhere to live permanently, not having school to go to…. Do they not realize their parents actively chose that situation for them?! No one to blame except their own parents. The world isn’t dealing you this hand, your family is. And also, if you want a stable place to live you’re going to have to pay for it and pay taxes like the rest of us. Saying you don’t bother anyone but then illegally staying on kids playgrounds and using sand boxes and playgrounds as toilets is not “keeping to yourself.” Its menacing.

I think the lack of education has to do with preservation of the culture. Their culture is so strong because it has not been altered much from it's origin. I see there are different types of gypies, but their central system of morals and values are strong. Don't get me wrong I believe in education. I would want everyone in the world to be able to go to school and develop, but I think it is about priority, cultural perspective of the educational system, and preservation. If you limit what is learned from a societal point of view, you can indoctrinate in a way. They seem to be happy and as long as they have their communities they can thrive in their own way. Not everyone has to be obsessed with a mainstream idea of success. We access education to grow as individuals, enlarge our perspectives, find talents and gifts, choose occupations, and for monetary gain. I suppose there are multiple ways to gain those same things. But, I do not know what I would do if I couldn't read. I love books too much to not be able to read of the adventure, ideologies, dreams, and curiosities that can be found within a book. As for being "beautiful" can be defined in so many ways. I hope they spend as much time shaping the personalities and "hearts" as they spend on the outside. I can gently relate with the obsession with looking nice. In my own community, Black Americans are the biggest population of consumers, yet have the least amount of wealth. I know a number of people who thrive on "beauty" even down to colorism, which I am learning colorism affects many population groups. Even in a Romanian Gypsy documentary, they spoke on how during the "dating season" it is important for women to look as pale as possible, less color the better. I say all this to say, there are so many demands on beauty that it is important to have "heart" or you will get lost. I also would hate for a woman's was based on her "beauty"... ironic right? Culture, is culture. What works for some might not work for another. As "we" as humanity continue to grow and Western influence continues to dominate a global expectation, it will be interesting to see if their communal expectations/requirements on education/ beauty/ marriage/ etc changes. Its impressive that they can trace their roots and continue to build branches.
