Being Black in Almaty Kazakhstan. The Truth!
Francois Marc walks around Almaty, Kazakhstan and interviews people about how it is to be Black in Kazakhstan. Many Black or African Americans ask me if it is okay and safe for Black Americas to travel to Almaty Kazakhstan. As I speak to many Kazakh people about this topic, I hope this video can offer some details and insight for Black Americans looking for information about traveling to Almaty Kazakhstan.
If you are thinking of coming to Almaty Kazakhstan, then think no longer and come! There are amazing things to do in a country that is full of good food, friendly people, and amazing sites, even on the city streets of Almaty. You won't be disappointed if you come to Almaty, Kazakhstan!

I feel like the reason people are chill here regarding race is also because compared to East Asian countries, kazakhs don’t suffer much from colorism. There are light skin toned kazakhs and dark skin toned kazakhs and society accepts both as beautiful, you won’t find skin-bleaching creams like you would in South Korea, China, Thailand etc.

there is still some colorism in Kazakhstan but it doesn’t affect your life to the point of making it harder. Luckily it is dying out bcs colorism is mostly is uplifted by older people and younger ones doesn’t care about it

Hi, Mark! I’ve watched your dombra playing video. Well done! Be sure people here will be very glad to meet you. Especially if they’ll know that you play dombra. Almaty is a very musical city. Theatrical and musical seasons are opening in the September. But festivals happen any time of the year. If you’ll be on August 17 here - on the hippodrome will be Kinga farm derby. Usually it ends with the small ethnic rock music concert. Anyway, you and your wife are very welcome to Kazakhstan.

Being a Kazakh, for the first time when I started studying English I looked at the foreign world. We grew up among many nationalities and completely different religions, they all respect each other, but when I found out in America or Europe there are such barriers, it was a shock for me and they sometimes ask Is it because I’m black then, I’m like, What does this mean? because we are all human 🧐🙃
@francoismarc3
@francoismarc3 17 күн бұрын
Unfortunately, the pseudoscience concept of race originated in Europe and was transferred to the US. The topics of race, racism, and color discrimination are always headlines in the US. I also believe humans are just humans, but part of being human is finding something, anything to discriminate against. Thanks for the comment.

I would love to go to Kazakhstan after watching this video Francois. It really seems like a very hospitable and beautiful country like you said. From what I learned from my friend from Uzbekistan, he said Kazakhstan people are a very diverse group of people with many different ethnic groups with a variety of European and East Asian features. Even mixed with Mongol tribes, Uralic, and Iranian people. That is why many Kazakhs look "Asians" I guess!! Lastly, I am also from Atlanta Francois. I used to live close to Emory University in DeKalb County and often went to Buckhead Lenox Square Shopping Mall a lot. I am sure you have been there too. Way more family oriented and traditional. This is why they are even more hospitable. The newly rebuilt ancient city of Turkestan is worth a visit. It has a mausoleum of sufi Khoja Yassawi. Many Kazakh Khans are buried there. Shymkent, there is places around the region to visit like Aqmeshit. In Mangystay region there is white mountains and the sea. There is a mosque in a cave. There is a channel called Alkettik where the guy visits Kazakhstan's different regions. Not that he covers everything of course. You can inquire, search and investigate.

Great video man, in my experience traveling around Asia you’re seen as a human-being first and judged off of your character rather than skin tone alone. And if you try to speak the language as well that usually always gives you bonus points + Another thing I had to get used to is being known as the American as well 😂 I always think like “oh yeah I guess I am American” We’re so used to being called AFRICAN American and that distinction almost connotes a second class citizen type of feel

To be honest, we are less tolerant than Europeans, so if people start facing bad behaviour from any group of foreigners your ass gonna be kick badly. You can check latest situation in Kyrgyzstan, where some Egyptian students had a fight with Kyrgyz boy, and all look a like students from Pakistan and India get pressured. I remember same with Indian workers in Astana, when they beat up some security guy and half of the city was redy to handle all of them, even if it was only 4 of them who did shit stuff. Kindness comes from strength, always remember that.

@@francoismarc3 The Kazakhs have one big drawback. This is great hospitality and patience. Many people take this for weakness, but this is far from true. As long as guests behave within the framework of generally accepted decency, there will be no problems. This is just for information. It’s better to ask your blackskin friend, who already lives in Almaty, in more detail about the mentality of the Kazakhs. We are not Europeans, but we are not classic Asians either. We are something in the middle with our unique culture, a people formed at the crossroads of different cultures. There must be an understanding that a peaceful and tolerant people could not have a state occupying the 9th largest territory in the world.

@@francoismarc3 Not really, it's just a reminder for all foreigners to be respectful wherever they go. There was a guy called Jonny Somalian or something who was harassing japanese people and he got his ass kicked. He wasn't the only one as well, there were other tourists who were really disrespectful to the locals in Japan. We just don't want the same thing to happen in our country. Kazakhstan has a very huge history of being colonized and oppressed by the Russian government, most than a half of our population has died out of man made famine during those times, all the elite was sent to gulags and our land was used as polygons like Semey and etc. that’s why in that time Kazakhs were minorities on our own land. But we are getting it back, this year Kazakhs officially got more than 71% of the Kazakhstan population and now we are considered to be monoethnic country not multiethnic. Part of that history still shows why we are so against “only russian” menus and places in here

@@francoismarc3 the old airport building is horrible! 😂 like stepping into the 90’s but not in a good way + super small so it’s crowded all the time

As soon as you don’t mess up with local people, no reminding them Borat, not telling them dirty jokes like may I date with your sister or any jokes about mother or land or something else people are ok! Once you crossed the red line you might have big trouble! Don’t forget Kazakhs are Muslims! All our traditions are based on Islam so don’t make jokes about women or sisters, mothers or traditions that you might find pretty funny! That’s your comprehension but don’t laugh directly to people’s face! For example polygamy is normal in our society! Some women are ok to be a second or third wife! For you it might be offensive or funny! You can laugh on it but do it privately! If insult Kazakhs and all Central Asian people to the face then you might have unfavourable consequences! Respect, respect and respect! Forget what you are traditionally making fun of anything in USA! It’s different here! Kazakhs are very hospitable, welcoming and friendly! It’s in our culture and blood!

@@Mr.Sabyrzhan Yes, but the context of me saying "women" comes from the two interviews I had with my friends in the video. You may have misunderstood. There is nothing sinister or deprecating about my words. As you can see from all my videos, I respect everyone. Thank you for watching. :)
