Bel Air is one of the most anticipated shows of 2022. This is largely due to the fact it's a reboot of one of the greatest television shows of all time. It uses most of the same characters from the original to tell a dramatized story and for the most part its been working. I like the story for the most part and a lot of this has to do with one of the most hated characters on the show. So today we're gonna take a look at Why I kinda Like the New Carlton.
******
Show: Bel Air. 2022. Universal Television. Westbrook Studios

I personally think that this version of the character is more realistic. Most rich kids are spoiled and abused drugs/alcohol. So it’s not totally out of pocket that Carlton would be the same way on this show.
@itakeonmovies

I definitely think there's plenty of aspects to Carltons persona here that ooze realism. One example I like is sports. For example, Lacrosse to him is about status and feeling accepted whereas for Will, Basketball is an escape. A lot of the characters in the show are privileged and Will seems to be the only one who knows he is at the moment. 🙏🏾

You hit the nail on the head with basically explaining he’s a good anti villain. He has flaws but you understand why he’s like that. Plus I like the fact that Carlton actually wanted the fade from Will, it proves he’s not just some dweeb & he’ll throw hands if necessary. The spin on his character is so sad though, it hurts your heart to think Carlton was really going through life doing drugs & being scared but that’s a recipe to create good character development. I feel he has potential to grow on people over time.

Exactly. I think if you're going to do a re-imagining of one of the most popular sit-coms of all time, it needs to be exactly that, a re-iamgining. So taking Carlton, the happy go lucky, nerdy dweeb we all know and love and asking, what if we should this dude actually struggling with his identity on a serious level was a genius move in my opinion. I like to think there's some black kids out there who might even be able to relate. Not all black kids are born in the hood and some actually come from wealthy households. They struggle to fit in with the white people and the black people don't accept them wither. Could be a cruel place to live mentally, and I think we see that with Carlton. ✊🏾

I do not like Carlton in Bel Air and that’s what makes me like the character of this Carlton. He’s not supposed to be likable, he supposed to be the antagonist to Will. I will however say I wish Will was just a tad bit more immature. He’s a hard headed, strong willed, prone to anger, troubled youth but he’s very respectful. People tend to say uncle Phil is too nice but again, this will and Phil aren’t the same as fresh Prince will and phil. Bel air Phil is the kinda person Will needs in his life. The kinda father figure this will needs. But we’ll see after the first two season are done how well Bel Air holds up
@itakeonmovies
@itakeonmovies 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I think you're not supposed to like this version of Carlton just yet. And I never thought of Will that way in this show, but you are right. The Will in the original was very immature and childish, which made his "teachable moments" feel earned. Here outside of the street stuff, I don't really know what Will is going to have to work on.

Given the current American political climate that has represented how conservative rich Black people can be, I think this reimagining of Carlton's character is perfect timing. It provides more nuance and growth for his character while modernizing him. I love the show so far.

idk. there's no reason to be disconnected from who you are. Original Carlton was who he was. privileged. Not understanding the micro aggressions against blacks because he had a good life. he just wasnt aware. and what will understood, he never had to face. that made sense. Ad far as I can tell Carlton is now, he's understanding of the position of the world, and is going along with it. looking down not just being privileged. but being legitimately bs.

The show managed to make me dislike Carlton but also be very sympathetic towards him…. Which is really rare for me. I can understand being seen as “white” for simply the way I talk or what I like and being overshadowed by someone who barely has to try. Not saying I’m as grimey as he is but I can sympathize with him. I can really see his character growing on me in later episodes once we see his growth.
@itakeonmovies
@itakeonmovies 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah definitely. I think its easy to write Carlton off as this spoiled rich sellout, when in reality he's just a product of his environment just as much as Will is to his own environment. I can completely sympathize with Carlton becasue his struggles are often glossed over becasue he is privileged or acts differently. We feel less bad for him when in reality he deals with some pretty heavy stuff as well. I feel this way about both versions of the character, although this version does a great job showcasing the inner battles he's fighting.🙏🏾

My opinion people dislike 👎 the NEW CARLTON because his character traits is equivalent to society self mirror. Self entitlement, harsh insecure JUDGMENTS, drug use, anxiety, lack of self direction, and etc....Not only is he's different from the LEGENDARY CARLTON but his reality smacks u in the face. I actually prefer this Carlton the yo yo of human thoughts, emotions, and understanding is today's Reality especially with SOCIAL MEDIA. Every character on the new show is controlled in some way by SOCIAL MEDIA. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE NEW SHOW & enjoyed your explanation GREAT JOB!!!

This is great. This Carlton definitely has a harder path to self discovery than the original. It's not so much that we don't like him, but it almost feels as if he doesn't really like himself at the moment and will being their makes it harder becasue they're so different. Social media plays a part in this forsure and I think it being more of a drama allows the show to explore different themes. I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I do as I feel somewhat invested in the characters. Can't thank you enough for the kind words and taking the time to comment here. 🙌🏾

@@itakeonmovies your welcome 🙏. Actually CARLTON is very similar to alot of middle class & wealthy kids regardless of race. I have spoken to the alot of similar age bracket they view cocaine not only as a good time but they also view it as an extension to alcohol. U will be surprised how many teenagers and college students are doing prescription drugs and cocaine. I do get why people dislike the new CARLTON because out of all the characters he's the most different from the original. However, I always viewed CARLTON as he is today.

Yeah race plays only a small part in Carltons makeup here. He fits a stereotype that could be attributed to many, not all, wealthy kids. I agree for wealthy individuals drugs are depicted as lavish and as you said a good time, whereas drugs when used by the poor are usually depicted as grimey and dark. I do think the show depicts Carltons drug usage pretty accurately. Just something he does and usually resorts to when he's stressed. And I agree, I think the original Carlton could have easily been this version. I think there are other versions of the character that could exist as well. The interpretations are literally endless. ✊🏾

the reboot is such garbage they bring in to many useless side plots every episode thats easily forgettable and takes away from the more entertaining main plot even though none of the reboot is good they have moments i can see people finding entertaining but it seriously doesn't know what plot it wants to hold, one minute its Carlton letting some white kids say the n word then another minute its Hilary making cooking vlogs its such pointless subplots that add nothing to that story besides more runtime. Honestly the worse reboot of a series iv ever seen next to the new beavis and butthead reboot that shit was so bad.
@itakeonmovies
@itakeonmovies Жыл бұрын
I can definitely see what you mean. I don't think I think it's garbage, but definitely don't think its perfect. When you look at the original show it was random, no true direction, new characters popped up all the time, but it was effective because it was a sit-com, we didn't necessarily watch it for how concrete the story line was. This re-boot is a more serious drama, so the plot is more necessary and I do think it bites off more than it can chew at times. However, I do think the show explores a deep and different spin on some of the characters we knew from the original, specifically in Carlton and Wills relationship, showing how their differences could really effect them both socially and internally. I even think in the case of Hilary, regardless how annoying some of her storyline is, it does a good job adding depth to the character. She's still spoiled, and naïve, but is trying to carve out a path that isn't a big joke, even though it still kind of ends up being, which I thought hit pretty hard. With this being said, it is a tough reboot to make, because the original is one of the greatest shows of all time and simply better in almost every way. Appreciate your thoughts! ✊🏾

Carlton’s the only character in the reboot that feels phony to me. Also his acting feels forced and doesn’t come off natural at all. Almost gives me anxiety during his scenes.

Lol yeah I've heard people feel the same way. I think it comes off really insecure, but I also feel like that's the whole point because so is the character.

I don’t mind the new Carlton or the old. But I DO mind the way you say it. If you can’t say the word why would you make a whole video about it

Did you watch it to give it a chance? You said “no…just no”, but what brings you to that conclusion? I think Bel Air is phenomenal, in my opinion. Keep in mind, it’s a reimagined version of Fresh Prince.

New Carlton doesn't seem American. Old Carlton was American. New Carlton was raised in Nigeria, and is representing a character on a reboot of a classic American TV show...
