Some 80% of the Tanzanian population depends on agriculture for a living. In the North-West, near Lake Victoria, banana is the most important staple crop. The majority of production however is through subsistence farming rather than commercial production. By introducing new banana varieties and providing training on technical management as well as marketing skills, the Belgian Banana cropping project aimed to improve the livelihoods of banana farmers in the region. After four years, the results are visible: banana bunches are twice as big and farmers are selling the surplus to other regions in Tanzania and even abroad.

I've been eating cheap GMO oranges my whole life, until I got into Iraq. The first ever organic orange I had was half the size and darker in color and belive me nothing tasted better. Most of the food there is organic and I can't belive I've been shoving rubish into my mouth my entire life.

I moved from Iraq to the US few years back, until then I didn't know how tasteless fruits and vegetables can be. and believe me that was the hardest thing to adjust too. I truly feel bad for people who never knew how fruits actually taste, I'm glad you got the chance to experience that, as I feel it will be impossible to do so in few years.

NastyAutist there is, but the price is always an ussue plus it is not the same, you can grow as much organic food as you want but the seeds have came from the same source, unless you can eat food preduced from seeds that the farmers kept through generation then at the end you still eating the same thing but has been grown using a diffrent method.

There are bunches of similar lengths which are not GMO. One concern is the effect on farmers' physique. I am certain one farmer could carry the non-GMO bananas. Look at them struggle here. Well, better GMO than the killer fertilizers.

+Weli Hassan... as it turns out, you are the one that needs to learn here mate, these Bananas are NOT GM (Genetically Modified) 'sensu stricto'.... these are actually products of conventional breeding... as a matter of fact, there is no commercially available GM Banana or plantain anywhere in the world... Ugandan & Australian scientists are leading efforts to Genetically Modify Banana but this is still largely at experimental stage and is not likely to hit the market for another 4-5 years
