Belgian Steel on the Nile: FN49 (SAFN) Rifle in Egyptian Service

The Egyptian contract FN49 rifles are a fascinating example of the geopolitics of Egypt became entrenched in the Warsaw Pact side of the Cold War. Adopted in the same era that Nasser was seizing power from the Egyptian royalty, the Egyptian contract numbered approximately 37,000 rifles purchased from FN Herstal in several different orders directly from Belgium. The majority of these rifles were of standard configurations but among these, there were precision rifle variants with Meopta quick-detach optics that are highly coveted on today's surplus market.
The FN49 was intended to be replaced by the Hakim rifle, of which conservative estimates put at a production value of possibly 70,000 rifles. However most of these appear to have been manufactured in the 1960s and the rifles that probably replaced the 37,000 rifles in Egyptian service are the SKS, Vz.52, and the milled receiver AK47, all from Czech and Soviet support to Egypt before and after the Suez Canal Crisis.
In this episode, we go over the FN49 rifle in Egyptian military service, explaining some of the intricacies and possible downfalls of the rifle while putting a couple rounds through it as well.
Please check out Machine Gun Dad on KZfaq! Scott has been a tremendous help to TFB TV in getting these historic firearms documented!

In fact, it's the proto-FAL in many ways. Short-stroke gas piston, a totally adjustable gas system, and in later models, a detachable magazine. It was ready to be adopted in 1940, but before production could begin, the German captured the Low Countries and France.

The dark stocked rifles from what I read years ago were imported by Century Arms.The rifles had original stocks that were so badly damaged or missing so in order to make the weapons marketable,they had a large batch of new stocks commercially manufactured ond stained to look like walnut.The stocks on my two Egyptian FN49 rifles are definitely not walnut and are of a softer wood.

Years of study and he's immersed himself in their culture too as he seems to travel a lot. I know it's more than one culture speaks Arabic but I hope you kinda get what I mean. If you can speak Arabic it must really open up a lot of experiences to you. I have said this before but when you look back to some of his earlier work, nothing wrong with it of course but he's come so far as a presenter and also an expert in his field. I really enjoy watching everything he does. If Miles finds it interesting then so do I!

@@Genesis23OPB you are right in some regard. A friend of mine from Lebanon explained, there is high arabic - used in literature and so on. That is the same in every region. But every region has a spoken dialect. Since the begining of arabic cinema and TV production the dialect of those countrys who have such an industry becomes more common in other regions.

@@Genesis23OPB I suppose so but I barely understand a word of it. Being a native English speaker makes me very lazy with languages. I can just about cope in French, being polite, ordering food, booking accommodation, even getting my car fixed on a couple of occasions and also going to the shops but that has it's own problems. Sometimes they think I can truly speak French but I don't and they engage me in conversation. It's embarrassing because I just spoke to them in French but then have to explain that I don't understand the most of what they are saying. Better than knowing nothing but still embarrassing at times.

My Egyptian FN 49 has a different stock. It must have been a replacement like you said. The guy I got it from was “the second owner”. He was the FFL and never sold it in his store. The stock has no unit disc or markings on the stock. The upper hand guard wood does match my stock though.

Dieudonné Saive finished the developpment of this FN49 some months before WW2 broke out.. The rifle wasnt properly tested and thus wasnt sold yet... Mr Saive saw the WW2 coming and left the country with his plans and came back after the war to Herstal to build them as soon as the plant was rebuild ! If WW2 didnt happend, this rifle would have been called "FN39" Mr Saive also designed the P90 (his last project) Yes, i'm belgian

I did my year in the Belgian army in 1988/89 in a logistics unit so I had the luck to have had the FN49 and the STEN in basic training and the first half of my tour, after that we had some extra time on the range for the FAL and Vigneron (both kinda sucked) ...sadly never got to fire the FNC ... Also I often wondered what they did with all those old rifles...

Nice video, but unfortunately there are a few mistakes. No rifles were originally blued, all were black enamel over phosphate. That flash hider is a us civilian design, never used by any military, although the Venezuelans had a muzzle brake. The second pattern of Egyptian rifle they were discussing is likely the century built Egyptians that have an eagle crest on the receiver. They were built using mix matched spare parts (including spare receivers) by century arms. The stocks in these are made by an Italian company specifically for Century, and have incorrect plastic butt plates. In the US, there are six different variations of this rifle available. Argentines were in 7.65, converted to detachable mag fed .308; Egyptians are in 8mm; Venezuelans are in 7mm; and for .30-06 the most common is the Luxembourg , although Columbian and Belgian rifles do show up from time to time. The Belgian rifles seem to be imported from Africa, and are usually in bad shape. No Indonesian or Brazilian rifles ever made it to the US, afaik. Interestingly, recently an Ethiopian trials rifle in 8mm was imported and sold by interarms in the US, but there was never a large contract order for these. These are very very nice guns and are a joy to own and shoot. Definitely my personal favorite battle rifle

I love it that you're featuring the FN49, but you gotta bring your A game to this. Do some research before getting on camera. Not knowing key parts of the story - on camera - is really rookie. (Or have I been watching too much Forgotten Weapons and expect too much?)

This was more of an over view. We didn’t do a history on any of the weapons just an overview. I think this was more about the Egyptian version and it’s use. Not a complete history of the fn-49. I added a little general info to encourage new collectors to take a look at the rifle.

So, I know I’m late to the party, but is it safe to fire the hotter 8mm Mauser through the FN49? I have heard of some European 8mm Mauser ammo pushing a 196 grain bullet at 2600 fps. Is this ammo safe to shoot in the fn49?
@OuchThatHurt320
@OuchThatHurt320 Жыл бұрын
In general, new 8mm is safe regardless of bullet weight in these with the gas adjusted appropriately. A lot of surplus ammo has suffered from powdered degradation and burns much much hotter than it did when new. This ammo will crack stocks in bolt actions, and could severely damage the mechanisms of semi autos. It's a matter of luck, but I wouldnt shoot hot surplus through any fn49, hakin, g43, etc. At least not without testing a lot of that batch with a bolt action first

You really missed the mark profiling an Egyptian contract FN-49 in this video, you totally FAILED to mention the inherent problem with these rifles having a one piece firing pin and NO firing pin safety stop which for some reason, the Egyptians decided NOT to include in their contract. Anyone owning one of these rifles that still has the one piece firing pin SHOULD NOT SHOOT IT unless they replace with the later 2-piece design, AND ensure the FP spring is not too short. That is the only thing preventing slam fires and out of battery discharges that can damage rifle and injure shooter. Other FN-49 contract rifles have the firing pin safety stop and are much safer to shoot.
